Wikipedia seems to imply it is a little after the Beast rescued Belle from the wolves and the night that they transformed was on Christmas Eve.

I remember the villain in this movie being legitimately spooky. Early CG graphics were unnerving.

He's the only thing I really remember from the movie. I honestly blame this movie for giving me a fear for pipe organs because I am afraid one will try to get unhooked from the wall.

Why is it hard for me to picture Emma Watson as Belle?

I think I know where the movie takes place now. It's in between the scene where Belle tends to Beast's wounds and the scene with Gaston. I guess Forte during this time tried to destroy the entire castle and kill everyone. I seriously want to make a fan edit splicing these two movies together just to see how continuity works.
