What's a story without a good antagonist? Lets have a thread dedicated to the most sadistic, most eloquent, most intimidating, most terrifying, or just the most villainous characters in comics or cartoons. Those that make you instantly excited every time they appear and you just love to hate.

There aren't many villains as good as the one you posted, unfortunately. Megabyte from Reboot and Megatron from Beast Wars are the only ones that come to mind off the top of my head.

Doesnt have to necessarily be a cartoon villain. I'm not well versed in comics, but there's gotta be some interesting ones out there no?

Here's another one of my favorites. I always liked Him because unlike most of the villains out there, he feels like one of the few that actually got shit done. Like I dont remember many times his plan was ruined at the last second by the ppg's. I mean that episode where they're sent into the future samurai jack style is still one of the most memorable.

I love Per Degaton. What do you do when the JSA ruins your plans? Just go through time and watch them get wrecked by life. Showed up after the Spectre exploded Atom Smasher's heart just to taunt him as he died. Even watched Stargirl cry over and over again just to enjoy her tears. He ranks up there with the most petty of villains.

I know most people just see Dr.Robotnik as a YTP meme but he really is one of the most entertaining villains in cartoon history. I can't think of many other villains I enjoy watching as much as him (and I don't even like Sonic).
His voice, the way he's animated, his interactions with the other characters, the episodes that were pretty much just about him, his range. He's a perfect example of how to write a comedic and ineffectual kid's villain in a way that's still entertaining without losing it's charm.

I'm torn between making one of my characters a man in a skeleton costume who is never unmasked, or just an actual skeleton. I definitely think costumed humans are underwhelming unless the setting they're in allows for nothing more interesting to plausibly be active. I do like the mystique of a mask, though.

Though live action, of all adaptations that have come and gone. This one still gets to me. Langella owned Skeletor like nobody's business. From the moment he enters the movie to his final scene. Every second Langella as Skeletor is onscreen you cannot help by fixated by his presence, and Meg Foster met that performance beat for beat with her's as Evil-Lyn. .

There was something really fascinating about how genuinely sympathetic he was as a character despite being a disgusting monster with so few redeeming qualities. If you ask me what I think Tim Burton's greatest feat was, it was finding a way to completely reinvent Penguin and make us feel at least a little bit sorry for a disgusting and monstrous child-murderer. Somehow, despite the character being a reinvention from the comics, he completely nailed down the essence of what Penguin is and should be if taken more seriously.

>I don't think anyone but Devito could've pulled that off in the same way
If you look at the behind the scenes for the movie you realize just how much DeVito was in synch with the character. It wasn't even just the look.
He was Burton's first, and only, choice and he actually was a fan of the comics and tv show prior to doing it.
He got so invested in the role he stayed in character between shoots, to the point he refused a stand in for the scene where he gets pelted by the mob, and when they showed him the one-sie he'd wear for the finale (which was a really uncomfortable 100 pound silicon suit), he loved it because he explicitly wanted to feel as terrible as possible when giving the performance.

It's this kind of dedication that makes the performance that much special.
They would never find someone else capable of pulling it, and they never will.

No it's not. This recent idea that villains need to have some form of humanity or sympathy otherwise they are bad characters is idiotic.
A lot of times a villain who's a 100% single-minded evil, with few redeeming qualities, is what a story needs the most, and you can find ways to make them interesting based on that. A character is more than the sum of their goals.
Pic related, for instance.

Dr. Sivana is great. Truly a great mad scientist.
>>
>>93133312
First season and part of the second he did some pretty immoral things.

>Tricked the Manhattan clan into stealing shit from his rivals to avoid blame on himself
>Turned a long-dead clan member into a schizophrenic patchwork monster
>Authorized a mad scientist to turn several helpless people into faux gargoyles, one of which was the brother of clan's greatest ally
>Was willing to risk the lives of others in his pursuit for immortality

Granted, he does wise up pretty quickly and starts to make amends before he could cross that final line.

Bummer how they squandered his big return in the Ben 10 crossover. Granted, at least his new design was decent enough, unlike what they did to the Saturday family.

Would have been awesome to have him team up with Vilgax and share his mastery over Cryptids while Vilgax showed him ways to manipulate rare animalistic aliens or something.

>>
>>93143181
He was live-action before getting into a cartoon.
>>
>>93135342
I thought the way he was beat was pretty clever. A bit silly for what it was, sure, but it fit within the nature of the story (how human belief is affecting the fantasy world and its waning power). Probably one of the few instances where a character denying magic with logic actually could work instead of just being "I'm going to stubbornly deny this shit until some contrived instance changes my worldview with a 180!"
>>
>>93132406
Well that's the thing; when an actor well and truly loves their character, they almost always deliver an outstanding performance because they've studied and understood the character not unlike someone getting to know a good friend/loved one. Danny has had shit roles before and after that, but his Penguin was a love letter to a previously goofy character, giving him a reinvention up there with Heath's Joker.

Things that make the smiler
>since you see most things through spider's eyes it takes a while to realise he's bad since spider's soul focus is hating the other candidate
>pretty realistic and there are a few politicians like him.
>Im a sucker for villains that can't just be defeated by one simple act like physically beating him or finding their weakness. even when they got evidence they still had to fight for people to believe him.

There are a bunch more seasons but I don't want to spoil too much. If you haven't read transmetropolitan yet you really should

Can't go wrong with classic Megs. He might not have had a lot of development during G1 (nor did anyone really in that show), but Frank really made him enjoyable from his cold disregard for Starscream's constant backstabbings and just commanding the upmost respect from the rest of his forces. Loved how in Prime they even deconstructed elements of his previous incarnations, namely the G1 version and had him actually reform Starscream into the perfect loyal right-hand mind (or left, given Shockwave pretty much got the righty honor). It was even great how Frank took his original G1 voice and made it more sinister than he had ever performed it.

Wonder if Prime Megatron will turn up in ROD or not.

Buddy was really fun, and even a bit sad in some way. He was just a loyal fan hoping to become the sidekick of his hero and idol, only to have his dreams crushed repeatedly until his patience broke. Odds are, if Bob had just indulged him, even though it would have been incredibly risky, Buddy might have turned out to be a great gadgeteer for heroes later in his life.

As for his villainous persona, man did Jason Lee really hit it out of the park. His lingering geekishness and cold resentment made for a fun character. Shame he most likely didn't survive that turbine despite the cliché of villains surviving horrible incidents. And that ice skate play where they even implied he was hiding and using robot duplicates or whatever.
>>
>>93143568
He slaughtered an entire colony of pandas simply because he thought one of them would rise up to kill him. If he had just banished them to the farthest reaches, he might have avoided everything that went wrong with his life, beyond maybe still winding a bit looney.

As for his survival, it seemed pretty concrete that the cannon cooked his goose.

Eye of XANA.jpg
20KB, 747x569px
Probably one of the few amazing villains who doesn't really have much of a personality or character. XANA was pretty much a force of nature, artificially made of course, but akin to something beyond the realms of normal understanding. Granted, its motivations were somewhat simplistic; destroy humans and take over the world, but the methods XANA employed and the constantly growing understanding of human emotion allowed it to manipulate many decisive events in its favor. Plus, said plans were fucking brutal at times, like causing a fucking cold snap that nearly froze everyone in the country to death (and very well may have if the show wasn't so indecisive about showing actual death).

Igthorn4.jpg
24KB, 300x225px
Far from brilliant or intimating, Igthorn was still very enjoyable if only because he felt like a more fleshed out version of the Smurf's Gargamel; a villain motivated by obtaining something only the titular characters can make and using it to achieve greater goals.

Plus, we even saw him succeed in many instances and actually deal considerable impact to the world in those cases. Shame nothing really stuck, though one could have hoped if they were allowed to continue after the last season, his takeover of the kingdom might have left some lasting effects for at least a few episodes.

The guy doesn't even make the attempt to justify his actions and yet you can't really be mad at him, seeing how utterly depressed and dead inside he is.

I also like WInd Waker Ganondorf for pretty much the same reasons; the guy is just done and wants the whole thing over with.

I'm surprised his BTAS incarnation never took off as his definitive origin/characterization, it seems eerily relevant again especially in these days of increasingly lethal escalations of autism.

>Jervis had an underage waifu, and projected her personality into his co-worker and became sickeningly infatuated with her
>unironically cosplayed on a first-date that he invited himself into, only to end up friendzoned when she got engaged to some well-adjusted normie
>his "mind control" gimmick played into his dissociation between his controlled fictional fantasies and the more unpredictable reality he was living in, but ironically he refused any accountability for his own actions and always blamed Batman (or whoever) whenever he got btfo, which prompted him to sink further and further into a criminal lifestyle without having to rely on an "Alice" like Mr. Freeze did with Nora

He really should have gotten more episodes, or at the very least had better quality comics since then. I think he was in at least one decent arc where he used coffee to mind control people or some shit, but other than that he hasn't really had much going for him since then.

I really dig Count Nefaria, mostly because he had the stones to go out and get himself super powers after dealing with super-powered heroes shitting up his operations.

And not only did he sucker three other villains out of their powers, he improved on what he got and became a damn team-wrecking badass, one of the single toughest enemies the Avengers ever faced.

Plus, he's classy as fuck and enjoys every minute of beating the shit out of every hero who faces him.

Evil Supermen are a dime-a-dozen these days, but Nefaria is an OG and he pulled it off with panache. His first appearance also showed layers to his megalomania with Whizzer bringing up how he'll just get older and watch his power fade. A rather novel angle to take, a villain confronting being past his prime.

Great stuff all around.

Part of what makes Father great is that, even at moments like the last part of Operation Zero where he's unmasked and he generally seems like a downtrodden loser, he still takes great pride in the shit he's done. Despite his actual personality, morally he's still more or less pure evil.

I like that for the whole first season Weird World is just described in the tones people'd use for hell. Secret Scientists literally flip at the thought of having to go back there.

I was fine with resurrected Argost being a bit off his game, he came back from the dead in the wrong body because Animo can't resist fucking with things. Plus the crossover ends on a note that lets Argost threaten the world again and the Saturdays pick up heroing.

I have thought a lot about how I would write Mad Hatter if I could.
I posted this on a thread a while ago and I'll do it here

I'd remove the idea of him being a pedophile completely. It has never been used well nor has it added anything to the character but pointless shock value. In fact, I'd go the opposite route and depict Mad Hatter as someone who's practically oblivious as to what sex is, like the oblivious and delusional manchild he is supposed to be. It could make for some pretty funny scenarios like Poison Ivy trying to seduce him for free gadgets but all he wants to do is put her in a Alice costume and invite her for tea against her will. It could also be used to make jokes where people think he's a pedophile because of the way he acts and his obsession with young blonde girls, but his intentions are not sexual in any way and he has no idea what he is doing wrong.

I'd also reconcile Mad Hatter with the "imposter" Hatter and just turn them into the same character, combine the Alice In Wonderland gimmick with the hat gimmick. The imposter excuse is idiotic and one of the reasons why the character never took off, and it discards a potentially interesting gimmick and a fun characterization.

Finally, I would try and write Mad Hatter as sort of The Tinkerer of Gotham, the guy who's on friendly terms with most of the rogues and who's responsible for building/fixing/selling a lot of tools for the other rogues. He's not exactly a huge threat himself but his machines are exceptionally dangerous at the hands of people who know how to use them.

Essentially, I'd try and add some more unique elements to the character and make him closer to the Batman TAS version. I'd like a Mad Hatter who is sympathetic, creepy and whimsical and who serves a unique role compared to the other characters (like the character he's based on) and not a child-molesting hat-fucker.

Him and Prime fighting in the movie is still one of my favorite things ever. It's executed perfectly, the punching, them using different weapons then said weapons getting eliminated, how Prime gets the drop on him and Megatron is trying to use a cheap move, Prime ends up getting fucking riddled but is still able to knock Megatron's ass off the building. Just pure kino.

The Green Goblin is legimiately the most terrifying villain in Spidey's rogues gallery.

He has literally crucified one of his employees to a wall using goblin blades that have probably been in storage for years. He fucked, impregnated, and murdered Peter's boo.
He even cured cancer and later weaponized it.

Even if I had all of Peter's abilities, if I saw Norms heading my way I'd just peace out in the other direction.

Let's paint a picture. He spent his entire adulthood researching as well as idolizing a man that he thought was a hero and when he finally replicate the experiment and gives him powers (which was considered impossible and a waste of time by his peers), and he then proceeds to travel back in time to gain a better understanding of his hero.

While there, he discovers that he is destined to become the Flash's greatest enemy. To make matters worse, he later finds out that The Flash is destined to kill him (or at least that's how I think it goes). Because of Thawne's mental state he then broke and decided that if that's what fate has in store, he'll play his role with a smile on his face and a song in his heart and the rest is history.

Magpie was Beware the Batman's one big hit. They basically took the comic book character and added a tragic twist to it. But instead of only being effective for a few stories, the show doesn't hide the fact that she's incredibly unhinged and dangerous. She switches from being pitiable to vile effortlessly. It annoys me when people accuse her of being a Catwoman ripoff when her relationship with Batman is very different. He identifies and pities her, but she mistakes that for love, and when her love is rejected, she goes to extreme, deadly lengths to lash out.

The Helsingard period of Atomic Robo was the best part of the comic for three good reasons:
1) Helsingrad's machinations and refusal to die even after being defeated.
2) The time period made the super-tech interesting without just being boring chrome & lasers.
3) It was well before Atomic Robo started going down the road of bringing out increasingly more dangerous villains that were defeated at the last minute by some convoluted scientific conjuration.
>what's that? giant regenerating kaiju island that will make the government nuke us all into oblivion if they're not stopped? good thing there was this convenient slightly abandoned nazi kinetic orbital bombardmnet station that literally no one talked about, investigated, or bothered to mention that we can just commandeer to save the day!

This is not the easily defeated Eggman I grew up with.

Skullmaster.p Dude was way too great considering the show was just a giant toy advert.

>voiced by Tim Curry
>killed a ton of people
>"Alas, poor Hanuman."
>destroyed Atlantis for a laugh and stole the souls of everyone living there
>corrupted an entire island population just so they could be more easily convinced to give him their souls
>locked in combat with the ruler of the core of the Earth
>had Norman get killed by the thing he fears most
>betrays Warmonger
>kills Virgil ("YOU PROMISED!" 'I did, didn't I?')
>almost won

He was fucking Superwoman, her world's version of Mary Marvel, you know, the young girl that turns into an older superhero. I don't think it's ever really said outright though.

And he would've won, in the end, had his own creations not been so effective at taking themselves apart.
If he hadn't pulled any punches when he had been playing with Bob and just had his omnidroid flay him the rest of the family never would've stood a chance.

that show was surprisingly dark considering it was to promote toys.

This, so much.
One of my favorite villains simply because of how silly he acts all the time, and how deadly he is when he's serious.

I like him in the Arkham games, specially in City.

Part of the anachronic order thing. "The Spear of Destiny" was on the timeline page way before Ring of Fire even started.

I would be fine with that.

>I'd like a Mad Hatter who is sympathetic, creepy and whimsical and who serves a unique role compared to the other characters (like the character he's based on) and not a child-molesting hat-fucker.

Oh yeah. The way I feel about Hatter is similar to what I feel about Scarecrow or the Penguin - I prefer to see them as these ugly, pathetic rejects who keep blaming their own shit decisions on everyone else. They're weak but still threatening thanks to their intellect.

We rarely ever get to see this though because for some reason villains always have to capable, cold and edgy.
