Giancarlo Volpe was pretty good at engaging with and trolling the fandom, directed some really nice episodes, great guy, he'll be missed

Sabrina Cotugno used to be a storyboard revisionist or whatever but recently got promoted to director, apparently around the time Volpe left the team to work on something else.
Cotugno is a rather active sjw caring deeply about race and gender and identity politics and all that. She's said on twitter that she for example wishes that the fans who like and produce content that sexualises underage characters would be prosecuted, probably talking about Area and Seddm from tumblr.
She's also said on tumblr that everyone in the show is bisexual, which she apparently meant as a joke but lot of the fandom took as word-of-god anyway. Now she recently commented on what Tom's race is, apparently without any legit canon info, and gave an answer that contradicts canon stuff in the guidebook and mumbled something about "it's hard to say" if Tom's a monster or not and said that she envisions Tom as mixed race (she's mixed race and brings it up a lot) and then talked something about mewman passing privilege and totally equated monsters as poc and mewmen as white, and made it clear that she hasn't read the book at all but just comments with her headcanon guesses anyway lol fuck canon amirite

It's like she doesn't understand at all that people don't give a shit about her personal headcanons but just want her to give canon reliable answers as a rep of the crew. It's like she doesn't understand how this promotion reflects into her relationship with the fans, or that the things she says now suddenly are kinda official.

If we're being real I actually really liked her work on the second season, despite her seeming kind of annoying/clueless when interacting with fans. She did the lyrics to The Ballad of Star Butterfly and that's like a top 10 moment right there.

something that wasn't technically retconned (because it was never established in the first place) but that they seemed to be going for in season 1, but not 2:

it sorta felt like they made a point of never showing the portals to/from the Mewni kingdom itself. when it was revealed in the middle of the season that the monsters also lived on Mewni, the implication seemed to be that not showing the portals before that was deliberate: if they had, they would have also been the same ugly green as the ones associated with Ludo etc., since they're in roughly the same place/Mewni is shit

but then the second season established that portals from the actual Butterfly kingdom are pink and blue and so that interpretation no longer works anymore. dunno if it was always the plan or if the vision changed or some of the new people on the crew just didn't pick up on it, or what

I think a similar thing is dimensional scissors being able to cut through the same dimension. that was never actually talked about/shown before but only really happened in the second season

Zuke was recruited off tumblr based on the quality of her fanart and working on SU was her first real industry job iirc. Sounds like a dream, except that she legit couldn't understand that when you work for a show you're expected to follow the direction the showrunner / creator / your superiors give you, that you can't just put in whatever you want like you can in your own personal fanfictions. She also apparently had trouble adjusting to the grueling pace and deadlines in the animation industry. She tried really hard to wrangle her ship, Lapidot, into becoming canon through the way she wrote them, and apparently got really upset at Sugar because she didn't let her make her ship canon but instead demanded that she follow Sugar's direction about which way the show should go, which she thought is unfair oppression or bullying or whatever, someone else has the screenshot compilation of her whining about Sugar on her secret tumblr.
At the same time she made the mistake of interacting with fans too liberally, not understanding what it means to go from a fanartist to a legit member of the crew whose comments now carry the prestige of official canon comments. The fans got wild with the attention she gave them and started to harass her with questions and demanding attention on pretty much every platform she could be reached, including social media and even mmporg games or such. Eventually she had a breakdown and quit the show because of all the pressure, whining about how she really tried to put a healthy queer relationship in media and got only shit for her efforts, and leaving behind a legacy of having turned Lapis and Peridot into artsy memelesbos in a barn

Essentially, they just couldn't adjust to the transition from fan to official crew member and everything that comes with having to actually work a real job in animation and deal with the fans

I think there's some inconsistency sometimes with portal colors, maybe, but "blue circle = Earth" is pretty standard

However she's so loud about her political views and has stated at least a couple of times on tumblr that she'd absolutely try her best to sneak in representation of every possible identity etc if she could that it makes me slightly nervous. I think that's only true sometimes with Hekapoo, with the flame portals. Although she's also shown cutting normal portals in the same episode (unless in Starcrushed when looking for Glossaryck she was just randomly returning to her forge every time she made a portal).

In Storm the Castle Star cuts to Ludo's castle, and the portal's the same as the one that appears when he or his monsters are shown arriving or leaving Earth.

I don't keep track of it from episode to episode so there might be some inconsistency re: colors, but generally it seems like before you go through the color/shape indicates the place you're going to, then once you're at that place the color/shape of the open portal behind you indicates where you came from. Portals to different places look different and some like Earth and the various areas of Mewni appear enough to be consistently recognizable.

So they show a blue portal for going to Earth, but avoided showing the portal from Mewni.

there probably are some scenes where a portal is colored incorrectly in relation to where the characters are or are going, but generally it's a fairly consistent worldbuilding thing from before the show really had much lore

which makes me think not showing portals to the kingdom in the first season may have been deliberate for the "twist" of monster oppression stuff, but then that was forgotten or abandoned along the way

It's a normal reaction to go after your friend if they run off in tears. We just saw Marco be shocked because the room returned to normal and Star left so suddenly and practically without giving any explanation.
