Studios usually end a season on a cliffhanger in order to entice companies to continue funding so they get to work on one more season. It often failed.

Dungeons&Dragons, they never found a way back to our world. A later sourcebook had them being eaten by Tiamat, however.

Battletech, the First Somerset Strikers never got the colonists back from Clan Jade Falcon. But they did in a later sourcebook, iirc.
