I like to think that Bruce and Clark had an understanding, that Bruce had wanted to die while fighting crime, but he didn't want to leave a burden behind on his true friends like how his parents left a mark on him when they were killed. Bruce was depressed with whatever the outcome was, and Clark gave him the space he needed because they always had that mutual awareness.

I like to think that he at least checked up on Bruce when he checked himself into Gotham General to monitor his heart palpitations, and both of them realized his game was up. I also like to think that, if Terry McGinnis did come into the picture, that Bruce and Clark got to spend some more time together once Bruce's conscience was put at ease knowing Terry was carrying the mantle.
