Laika is always in a tough spot. People love them but no matter what they do, they'll always have the kids stuff stigma because of stop motion, and they just don't make a lot of money compared to what they invest.

I really hate how the Oscars treats animation.
Laika cranks out some quality films but the academy just lets Disney win because "Their kids saw it"

That's what happens with a rating system over a hundred years.

First they had G for General and PG for Parental Guidance. Then there was R for Restricted and then there were movies that didn't quite go R (Indiana Jones or Gremlins) that are PG-13 for Parental Guidance or over 13.

And so now we have G rating that were used for things like Planet of the Apes (which has bare man ass and a plot most kids wouldn't focus on) but now means "cartoon movies for kids 7 and under no live action"
A PG rating that once meant what it stood for (most Richard Pryor movies were PG if I remember right) but now just means the most kid friendly thing you can get for live action.

From my understanding she's a normal girl who happened to live somewhere haunted while Norman can see and communicate with the dead. Sure they're both outcasts but seems like they'd need more to go off of.

Because laika is a studio that's only made 4 movies, none of which that have been very noteworthy other than the fact that they are stop motion.
Coraline was their best film and it was their first.
Paranorman was ok but the story completely fell apart halfway through and the whole thing felt rushed.
Box Trolls was just absolute garbage start to end.
And Kubo needed to be a good hour longer because like the norman it felt rushed an unsatisfying as fuck.
AESTHETICS can't make up for bad storytelling.

Yeah. In order to make a CGI film that holds up with modern CGI films, you need tons of computers and animators who can use expensive machinery, i.e. not half retarded Coreans who can't remember what color Bart Simpson's shirt is after painting it 9,000,000,000 times.

Computer Animated films are expensive as fuck, but people prefer them over Hand Drawn cartoons, so they make a bigger net gross.

Kubo got all of the love in the world. Especially by me. A friend of mine called Chris Butler died shortly after the film came out, it was the last film he saw, so when I went to see it, I got one hell of an emotional kick in the nards when his name came up at the end.
