I just had a thought adding to the Star is the Darkest Spell/Dies Irae theory.

Not only is Star the Darkest Spell, but I believe herself, or the wand she possesses had devoured/imprisoned Toffee. I believe this due to the following words in the trailer.

"I call the darkness unto me." "From deepest depths of Earth and Sea." "To blackest nights I pledge my soul and crush my heart." "To summon forth a deathly power to see my hated foe devoured."

This implies that Toffee was somehow imprisoned/eaten. I believe that either Star herself had done this due to her memory of having his finger. Possibly linked to the Bloodmoon ball unleashing Toffee in someway? Due to the next episode revealing Toffee for the first time. This is also backed up by the ending note on that episode which states "A great evil has been unleashed" this also implies that Toffee wasn't in the regular world in a sense, due to being "unleashed"

This goes back to him being in the wand/Star. This also explains a few things. Such as how Toffee knew about the whispering spell. He was literally there in the wand, or within Star herself at the time.

The way the story is being built has a lot of parallels with Prisma Illya so far.
Season 1 is sort of generic but also plays with a lot of the standard stuff for this kind of show, and has a few cool moments.
Season 2 broadens the cast and makes things more character-driven and dramatic rather than simple action, but still keeps a lot of goofy slice-of-life stuff. All while the main plot takes a backseat, but slowly builds up in the background until the finale when it explodes with a huge drama bomb that completely changes everything.
And now Season 3 is set up to have a major setting, cast and tone shift, as the greater villains come back in full force and shit gets way more fucking real than it has up to now.

I really, really hope they can deliver.

Star vs the Forces of Evil would benefit a lot if it inherited more than just the magical girl theme. The zany structure sort of fits Star`s whimsical nature, but a more organized framework would definitely improve the show. S2 is surprising since apparently Ludo is the character with the greatest development, but this happens to the exclusion of several other characters. When I say magical girl shows, I am not talking about monster of the week stuff. Magical girl shows usually have several characters due to the common school setting. This gives more opportunities to flesh out the other characters. This show desperately needs to focus a more on the students of Echo Creek and the inhabitants of Mewni. Popular characters like Janna and Jackie are still just minor characters. The episodes never center around them. There has been no attempt to flesh out these characters with so much potential. Something along the lines of Friendenemies.

There is no reason to give any other character an episode unless it's advancing the greater story, which is Star's story. Even the characters that are strong enough to carry their own epsiode, like Buff Frog, Ludo and Moon, should not just have an episode about them for the sake of it.
We already know these characters and care about them, an episode that develops them further without working toward any greater purpose in the narrative is just a waste of screentime.

They're popular, but they are not important.
Correction: Jackie is important. She's been important since Season 1, because Marco's crush on her has been a major influence on how his relationship with Star has developed, long before he even started talking to her.
But in that important role, it was never important for her to receive significant focus or development.
In fact, her lack of development has perfectly serviced the probable story angle going into Season 3 that Marco failed to get to know her despite her becoming his girlfriend. We know exactly enough about Jackie to feel bad for her situation, but we are not attached enough to her that we lose sympathy with Marco for neglecting her, and more importantly we (generally) do not find her relationship with Marco more interesting than Marco's relationship with Star, which is the most important relationship in the show.

Overdeveloped characters is bad writing, just as much as underdeveloped characters.

I could not give less of a fuck about the school setting if I tried. Janna and Jackie are the only truly interesting characters from there and understandably they also have the most focus, and most importantly appearances actually outside the school.

I would like to see more Mewni, as it offers potential more than a fuckin' dumb high school, but we haven't seen enough of Mewni to know about its inhabitants at all, minus prominent secondaries like Moon, Ludo, etc. That could change in the next seasons and I'd enjoy that.

Unfortunately I'd say a flaw of this show is that Earth in this show is BORING, boring as all hell, and it seems a waste to focus on it more. Because, to the show's credit, the strong focus on Marco/Star antics keeps the focus away from the dull setting, not to mention the plot/lore episodes that are understandably much more interesting through not revolving around fuckin' Earth.

Even now I still really have no sense of what Earth "is" in this show. There's Marco's house, I know that pretty well, and the school, as boring as it is. But what else? It hardly feels like there are consistent settings--there's that taco place in S2 I guess, and they went to the park a few times. But where do Star and Marco like to hang out, what do they think about different places, etc.? The characters returning to the river (?) in Just Friends stood out through making use of an existing setting, for once. Maybe I'd care more if they actually focused on that, but they didn't and so I don't. Earth seems deliberately boring so Star contrasts with it.

We haven't seen much Mewni either, but the Tapestry Room and monster temples and castle are already more interesting than a taco place. Just the pink sky and three moons with the asteroids seem way more interesting, and those are just a constant background feature

Would I have liked if they'd fleshed out Earth more? Yeah maybe, but by now it's too late to care since they didn't exactly do an amazing job anyway.

Marcos personality is a defense mechanism against it because he refuses to act like the others for some reason, despite having large potential, mayb he is naive, maybe he is sheltered, he craves danger to test himself but cant get any and runs away in the few chances he gets before he could be tested, meanwhile star has to forced him into those situations and have allowed him to grow

I think it is a deeper show about peoples motives and personalities/masks, and how they are formed/ exist without others ever knowing the real truth, or how the sausage is made. Remember, its 21st century west coast America being compared to medival mewny, if you want to get into politics , corruption, organized crime, power, money, privilage lust and ultimatly alphaness AKA leadership and getting what you want, perhaps through using others. On earth these are considered male traits, and in todays pc culture its "hypermasculinity" " toxic masculinity" to be not boring. Marco want to be this, but cant/doesnt go far enough, at least until heckapoo forced him to. Compare gim to Tom, and to toffee, its a great commentary, it almost reminds me of slade snd robin

I guess that post could sound more like I'm criticizing the show more than I actually was, which I wasn't trying to. I do think it has a lot going on, often more than it gets credit for despite some of what fans noticing maybe not always being entirely deliberate.

Despite my view that Earth in this show is boring, they actually have avoided that being a legitimate issue by it not often being the focus, just a backdrop to the magical shenanigans and character stuff that go down. But for that reason I'm not eager for it to be spotlighted more than it has been, both because nothing stands out to me and because its inhabitants are often generic and dull

Mewni by contrast is the actual interesting place, and if they're really going to switch the setting there for the next seasons it's probably the best decision they could have made. Sometimes the lore can make you feel "why am I not just watching the show about that" when paired with a mediocre Earth episode. Star Vs. can now actually become that show by making the Mewni stuff real and prominent, not just in the shadow of Earth events.

I expect you don`t think this show is perfect. I like this show, but I find it frustrating when they waste time on terrible episodes instead of doing something interesting with characters like Starfan13, Janna, Jackie, etc.

I think this is probably the opinion of the majority since the show is written in a way to wow us of how fun, magical, and mysterious Mewni and the other dimensions are in comparison to plain old Earth. I`d say it is the writers` fault because they haven`t done much to make Star care about our dimension. I guess Marco showed her a geyser, but I don`t think it did much for the audience. It would be nice if they made her actually care about Echo Creek.

Also the characters from Mewni get good episodes around them like Tom and Hecapoo.

They don't show too much of other dimensions though either, and Mewni is kind of a shithole in S1 (that's why it's appealing from the audience perspective, but I guess in-universe Marco's not exactly seeing it as the best place ever). Actually that's what I liked in the early days of the show, that all the dimensions just seemed to be kind of dangerous hellholes that wouldn't be super fun for Marco to experience.

The difference for me is that the other dimensions at least have some novelty through their characters (Moon, Ludo, Glossaryck, Toffee, MHC, etc. are all more interesting than any non-Marco Earth character/maybe Janna on a good day, because they actually impact the plot) or have some novelty like the Plains of Time. Actually Plains of Time is like the only place besides Mewni that takes the "other dimension" concept to interesting places as well; I can't say I particularly care about Pixtopia or the Bounce Lounge either. Difference is that we're not in those places the majority of the time.

I just can't really think of too much that could be done with Janna/Jackie to make them relevant beyond the roles they already have. Jackie will obviously get some sort of development/exploration when Jarco ends, which is at least plot-relevant, but I'm not sure what else she could contribute. Janna is great and plays a good role as an Earth friend for Star who's not Marco, but she pretty much is just comedic and I think that's fine. Maybe when things get more intense she could try to defend Star, or use her skills at getting personal information to solve a problem, or maybe feel useless as a human or something.

But then that requires her to be in Mewni anyway, so I can't picture a Janna character development episode that takes place before that. StarFan13 is too much of a joke to get a full episode.

They could always give them Earth problems, but even as I like them I don't think I'd care much about their Earth problems as the Mewni stuff heats up.

Nowadays the closing credits/Starcrushed give me the impression it's Marco/her other friends/freedom from the burdens of responsibility that appeal to her about Earth more than the place itself.

I do really like the idea of her being shown to love Earth but it's just a little too easy + she's not THAT much of an alien anyway. Mewni's a weird combo of modern and medieval.

Couldn`t agree with you more. I`d say even not having magic they could impact the plot in other ways, like giving Star things like perspective, advice, wisdom, etc. that could actually make her less reckless, which is one of the reasons she was sent to Earth.

Or Janna could just become a witch or a monster and assist to then betray Toffee to help Star.

I feel like part of the problem is that a large fraction of the (non-school, non-Diaz-house,) Earth episodes take the form of "Star and/or Marco meet a crazy person." Dog-lady. Hair-lady. Mina. Emilio. Pirate restaurant staff and Preston Change-o and Gustav (sort of, for those three.)

Basically, every chance we have to expand Star or Marco's life on Earth (and maybe set up some recurring plotline - though I suspect Mina will matter again,) is instead spent on meeting some random weirdo whom we're not expected to take seriously or care about beyond their part in the conflict of that particular episode. Pretty much the only change to said life on Earth that wasn't set up as of at latest "Monster Arm" was the introduction of Janna to the supporting cast; aside from that, Star has Mewni and her magic, Marco has his karate and (his crush on) Jackie, they both have the Diaz family and school and each other, and that's it, same as it was in early Season 1.
