Gargamel was a monk, and his cat was named Azrael(an avenging angel). also gargamel's boss was Balthazar or something like that, he wore purple, the color of bishops.
the smurfs were a bunch if inmoral creatures, commanded by a version of Karl Marx, and there was nothing wrong with Gargamel wanting to deal with them.
