I wanted to read this, what with it at least seeming shitting on both sides of the fence, but the page layout in this is unreadable. Polluted to the absolute core with all these semi-transparent social media feeds we don't give a shit about.

Chaykin's art is still on point even if this is his much less sharpened recent self, but the overall art direction in this book is a nightmare much bigger than the dystopic vision he's trying to portray.

He feels the same way. Seriously. He thought by now he'd be crucified by the left over Black Kiss but since nobody under 40 really reads his stuff none of the shriekers are even aware of it.

Thing about Chaykin that a lot of people don't know is that he is incredibly well regarded by most of the big pros working now for his 80's work & that he's known for giving out a lot of advice to younger pros, sometimes brutally but they've all admitted they've been better for it.

Thanks for your opinion.

He has devolved as a creator, both as a writer and as an artist. Many of his post-Flagg! series relied on the same setups (a terrorist attack to open the story), Jewish/Italian protagonist, fast-talking character types, satirical identity politics (which to his credit he did thirty years before it really existed), eroticism, interwoven sometimes confusing narratives, and nostalgia for postwar metropolitan America which made Flagg! pioneering but yielded diminishing returns on successive works. The only thing missing from this work is overt science-fiction flavor, which is consistent with him saying a few years back he'd never go back to that genre because he felt he was unsuccessful in it. Then again he doesn't have to, we already live in the future now.

His art was never meant to be digitally colored and suffers when it is. In the last 20 years his art has gotten lazier when it used to be remarkably tight, with chunky-faced males who look like stereotype Italians and now a preponderance of CGI backgrounds/props.

I'll read a few more issues but I have a pretty good idea where it's going because it's where all of his original works do. People yelling at each other, fucking like rabbits when they think no one's looking, strange bedfellow alliances, double crosses, an identity reveal here and there, and a settling up of scores at the end.

The thing that surprises me is that for a guy raised in NYC and Chicago who uses all of the above tropes, he hasn't put it to work writing about the Mafia.

The first 12 are everything you've read about.

After that there were some really fucking awful fill-ins for a few issues & Alan Moore wrote a terrible back up story but Chaykin comes back for a few more & then around 24 he left for other projects but instead of ending the series they had a new team on it which wasn't the same. As a matter of fact a year and a half later they published a 4th wall breaking apology issue for getting so far off the track.

Chaykin came back for another 12 issue mini that was good...not great & was a slight reboot sending him to Europe & ending with Ruben in a decent place to end his story.

The recent HC covers about everything you'd need.
