And they had the best mentor protege relationship mainly because Richard isn't consciously trying to mentor Sam, he's just running on big brother instinct and showing him the ropes.

Sam also is missing a mentor figure and his father is gone and already looks up to Rich. Hell even after he found out about the whole Cancerverse thing he fricking saw Rich take responsibility for his own fuck ups, he knows Rich isn't all talk and that he actually backs up his words which is also what inspires Sam to go after him in the Cancerverse.

I rather read about Rich and Sam more than Spider-Men 2.0 with Bendis having Miles be bitchy about Peter and Peter sucking up to Miles or the YASSS Queen disappointing Kamala with her typical Carol shit.

I am still upset about this getting cancelled and I hate Champions so yeah I'm super bummed out

Guardians of the Galaxy #5 is supposedly going to tease a plot that's going to pull Rich into the Guardians comic. He read Loveness' Nova and also plans on addressing some dangling cosmic plots from his own Nova run so hopefully Sam pops in there too.

Ignoring the 100% overship on the first issue, the sales were:

>2: 23k
>3: 19k
>4: 15k

So from Marvel's perspective, it launched at shit numbers, was losing 4k readers an issue, hit danger zone in the 3rd issue and cancellation in the 4th. It ended up stabilizing after the 4th issue, but by that point the cancellation order to have it done by issue 7 would have already gone in place since had it not stabilized then it would have been their lowest selling book by the 5th issue.

The only Marvel NOW books that sold worse than Nova were Solo and Foolkiller, both of which were cancelled at 5. Hell, Ghost Rider sold better than Nova and it only lasted to issue 5.

It got about as much promotion as most of the other Marvel NOW books. Had a one page inclusion in the Marvel NOW preview book, got set-up in the last issue of the previous volume, and had a few interviews for the book. They figured that the return of Richard Rider would be enough to get the book to sell and so it was promoted at the hardcore Richfags as the "return of Richard Rider that you've been asking for!" Hardcore Richfags then proceeded to boycott the book and lead a campaign to try and get as few people as possible to buy it because Rich was being forced to share the book with Sam.

The irony being that this whole fiasco has shown that these so-called "Nova fans' (who are in actuality just DnAfags that treat volume 4 as the be-all, end-all) hate Sam more than they love Rich. They'd rather see Rich fail than Sam succeed.

It's a title without an MCU movie or show, it's low on Marvel's priority list, it's not a Bendis or Editor pet character comic, nor is it part of the Diversity comics (otherwise they would be making a huge deal out of it).

Also with how much comics Marvel is putting out there people tend to only pay attention to the popular ones or the ones that have event tie-ins and with how pricey they are people won't try new characters. Heck right now there are still people just finding out about this comic

Granted if Nova gets popular (like Marvel Studios announcing a movie popular) I bet they'll re-launch it with a high profile Marvel artist and a high profile Marvel writer (and that scares me in a way because that doesn't always mean it's going to be quality).

But the same effect that happened with Bendis Guardians is going to be in play, it will sell because it's popular.

And mind you, this isn't without precedent. Hardcore Richfags bitching and moaning at Marvel that Rich isn't treated like an A-lister despite his books never selling has been something that's been going on for decades. It happened after volume 1 was cancelled. It happened after volume 2 was cancelled. It happened when volume 3 was dead in the water.

Mind you, I fucking love Richard Rider. He's been one of my favorite heroes since reading him in the 90s New Warriors series, years before the DnAfags took over the fandom, but his fanbase has always been shit. I think the problem is that Marvel promoted him as "Spider-man for the next generation" and a lot of people really bought into that. Then when Nova didn't end up actually becoming the new Spider-man in terms of popularity and promotion, they felt snubbed like it was everyone else's fault, be that Marvel or fans of other characters, that he never "got his due."

I think that's why there was such massive push-back against Sam. After decades of not getting treated like the A-lister they/we so desperately wanted him to be, volume 4 comes along and finally propels him into newfound popularity. He's leading events, has a great book, new fans of the character come flooding in, showing up in video games, then he has this fantastic sendoff with Thanos Imperative. Then right after the Nova name finally meant something, in comes this new character to steal the thunder and he seemingly gets a bigger promotion than Rich ever got (in their eyes at least).

Basically, they feel like Sam stole the popularity that was rightfully Rich's.

I empathized with Rich, I think he was probably more down on his luck than Peter in a way. I mean Peter at least had his genius and hot girls chasing him despite everything but Rich having to be Nova pretty much took away from his life, he didn't even graduate High school (although I think he did later on). At some point he even gets called to a space war and goes thinking he's going to die but he doesn't and he feels like shit or the second time he loses his powers and tries jumping from a building thinking they will kickstart just like when Dwayne pushed him and he had already wrote a goodbye note to his girlfriend....

And this is all before his life goes to full shit in Annihilation.

I honestly love Rich and Sam also gained a new spot in my heart, I hope somewhere in the future I get to see them together again in a comic.

Because Morales is Bendis' darling and Kamala is Amanat's baby, Sam got some push in the beginning but Loeb left for TV and now they just make him the third wheel to Miles and Kamala. Heck even Bendis and Amanat planned for each other's characters to be in each other's titles and Waid doesn't seem terribly interested in Sam (although to be fair he doesn't seem that interested on Miles either, it's mostly Viv, Kamala, Cho and Scott). But Sam already got kicked out into being a background character in the YASSS Queen Cosmic battle while the rest of the Champions are main characters in different titles for the crossover event, Sam is still low priority.

It's why I think the original New Warriors really worked. It's members were pretty different in ages and issues but all of them had problems that people reading it could find themselves in for at least some of people. You had Rich and Namorita for the older but not quite adult crowd that had their problems stemming from college, work, relationships and so on. Vance and Angel struggled with highschool issues, first love and parental/parental figures abuse, and Robbie was there for the younger crowd to find themselves in.

Despite being wacky people in tights having street fights and other weird shit it was all pretty grounded in what folks went through. It was everything Marvel actually thinks it's current books are.

If you're in it for good writing you've long since abandoned everything related to current marvel. If you're in it for specific characters you've also long since abandoned current marvel. If you're in it for marvel itself you've long since abandoned current marvel. Marvel has no target/loyalist audience anymore, their niche is now abusing social media and clickbait to drive sales among people who buy a comic book maybe every month or every few months.

But a lot of their comics aren't selling that well like they used to and DC is kicking their ass, their sale tactics are shit and they have made it impossible for people to want to try new comics as well.
