But this movie series outdid it in both fields, for better and for worse.

Shrek 2 even back when I saw it relied too much on references just for the sake of references. Why was there an Alien reference? Why was there a Flashdance reference?

Haven't seen it in years, I can't say. I'd say the first two Kung Fu Pandas and Captain Underpants are my favorites.
