Russell writes a book poking fun at human foibles and finally gets to the place where he's got arguably the lowest hanging fruit right in front of him. He could have easily built a strawman or depicted both sides as absurd to follow his narrative.

And instead, in 3 pages he dignifies both positions at no expense to the other in a way most media is hard put to do, leaving you feeling able to appreciate them not merely tolerate them, like an actual adult who understands that it's necessary to hold opposing positions in life.

I think what worked is that he didn't take the easy way out for some of the characters. Like it would've been real easy to be like some other shows or whatever and have Sargon always be right just because he's a scientist and the priest be completely backwards in his way of thinking just because he practices religion.

But in the series you see that Sargon made a very major, avoidable error that caused chaos in the streets and the priest was discriminated against because he believed in monogamy (and in turn he wasn't sold on same-sex marriages because his religion believed they needed to reproduce to survive). They have their good points and bad points as characters.
