The writing really brought it down for me. It felt very meandering and never really sold the threat of being in a doomed planet. It felt very "Last five minutes on Namek". The characters also came off very unengaging and milquetoast and the plot was ultimately pretty cliche. I did enjoy the last scene with Nebula and the art in general.

I like thos arc. The three issues were better then both Bendis runs together.

Duggan knows how to write good stories. Deadpool became one of the best ANAD runs.

I'm trying real hard to remember when Phyla was ever in the Soul Stone. Can't recall it happening in PAD's Cap Marvel run and the only other option I can think of was her appearance in She-Hulk, but that can't be right. And even if it was, there's no reason for Martyr and Quasar to be there, since they came much later.
I mean, I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth but that's just weird.

Yeah, Magus used magic to trick Quill into thinking he'd killed the Guardians and then Quill had killed him, but it turned out he'd just stolen their spirits and whisked them away with him. Only problem is he wasn't wearing the Soul Gem then either. Shit's weird.
There's no evidence of this, but maybe after getting vaporized by Thanos, Phyla's soul found its way into the Gem? Hopefully they'll explain it later down the run and it'll lead to a full return.

This is the best issue of GotG I've read in a very long time.

As long as you accept that it's non-canon then it's pretty good. Writing is nothing special but the art is gorgeous. The main issue is that it does quite a few retcons to Gamora's origin (inserting Nebula as a sister to her with their MCU relationship, changing who genocided Gamora's race, couple other things). But considering this issue shows that her origin is unchanged, and the Thanos ongoing shows that Nebula's origin is unchanged, we can pretty safely assume that the Gamora ongoing's retcons aren't canon since I'd wager the two ongoings that are currently running and taking place in the present have precedent over a 5 issue stealth mini flashback arc that's clearly meant to just be SYNERGY as fuck.

It's also worth remembering that the Gamora mini was schedule to appear way, way, waaaay earlier. Odds are they intended for it to be movie-friendly and retcon her backstory to fit, but by the time it finally came out plans must've changed. Probably best to consider the mini to be canon only to the movieverse.

Well, they referred to the Infinity Gems as Infinity Stones so there's that, but that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. And the soul stone is colored orange here >>93042618 (though that might not be literal and just a result of the whole issue being tinted orange), which is its MCU color by process of elimination.

But yeah, seeing that Gamora's history wasn't synergized to hell and back was a relief, and I guess I can just accept that in 616-8, they're called Infinity Stones instead of Infinity Gems. The gems shattered in 616-7 afterall so I'll just no prize it that these are the Infinity Stones from Secret Wars: Infinity Gauntlet (which Duggan also wrote) and Reed just plucked them up and put them in 616-8 to replace the ones that had shattered.

The ship is an improvement over the one that Bendis had given them though, and they at least gave it a proper origin in-universe since it's a Fraternity of Raptors ship that they hijacked. Like, yeah it's obviously synergy, but Duggan is making the best of it. Baby Groot isn't even actually "baby Groot" in the same sense that MCU one was. He just looks like him because of, well, forced synergy. Duggan even pretty much said as much that he was forced to do baby Groot but is trying to do his own spin on it and make the best of the situation.
