Neil Gaiman had next to zero experience in comcis when he got Marvelman and that opened his way to Vertigo and Sandman. Warren Ellis once advised aspiring comics writers to not read comics but books and then bring what they've learned to comics. Gerard Way pretty much got his career in comics because he does music and is popular so people gave him comics to sell on his name alone. And he proved so good he is now doing Doom Patrol and Cave Carson - are you bitching about that too?
