Why can't recent legacy characters be more like him?

The book had a wider theme of the past, how people interpret that past, and form a legacy out of it. And Jack was central to those themes.
The modern selection of legacy heroes are mostly in books which either strive to be no more than disposable entertainment or tackle things happening now in a preachy way that wont be relevant in 5 or so years, in which the protagonist could be a talking shoe and nothing would change.
And Robinson was a good writer and Harris was a great artist.
