Do what the new Nova series is doing. Sam sucked but having him interact and build a rapport with the Rich Rider has done a huge service for his character.

Dude finds some mcguffin that his grandfather used to be a superhero. Grandson uses it and gets his ass kicked. Grandfather has to teach grandson how to be a hero.

So, there is this random kiddo. Lives with his parents on a junkyard. He is not really smart or fit, but the epitome of weaponized autism. He can't stand Iron Man, when talking about him with a friend he said that everyone with half a brain can make an Iron Man suit out of junk. His friend told him to just do it if he thinks that it is that easy.

So he tried to build one. Just to prove a point.
And he sat there, after school untill 2 Am, everyday, and tried to make it. Just to prove a point.

Once a bunch of criminals tried to dispose a body on the junkyard. They threaten his family.
So he took the finished parts of his suit (an arm and a leg) and tried to chase them away. Which he did.
But he got shot and now he is stuck in a hospital. And his parents are poor
So now they sit on a shit ton of bills they can't pay. However, Stark also found out about this shit and paid the bills.
He wants to have him as a protege, kiddo says no because he can't stand Stark but Stark leaves his card and a stick if kiddo wants to call back
This also results in a clash between parents and kiddo because he declines Starks offer.
Also, appearently, this shit went so viral that half of the underworld now wants to have his head because they think he is an easy target and Iron Man tech is cool to have.
Stark meanwhile keeps an eye on him, not extremly but he looks occasionally what he is doing with the stuff.
And he lands into hospital rather often and Stark always bails him out, so they see each other regulary and kiddo starts to warm up towards Stark
