Rant incoming bros. So recently I've been on a Marvel high and read 3 Fantastic Four runs (Waid, Millar, Hackman). Hackman was easily the best, followed by Millar. Why do people keep saying Waid's run is very good? I know Ringo's art is lovely and all but holy shit the most remarkable thing about Waid's run is just how unremarkable it actually is. He took character archetypes too literally (Susan is supposed to kind of metaphorical mom holding the team together so she literally acts like mom, Johnny is supposed to be bit immature so he is literally a manchild, Ben is supposed to be a short tempered brute so that's like the only emotion he has ever in this run). Don't get me wrong, there's some good stuff like the Galactus arc or the issue where FF meet Kirby but on the whole it's just so meh. I really don't think Waid as a writer does it for me, I felt the same way about his JLA run which people kept saying is the second best modern JL run. Fuck you, Kelly was the second best and Johns even with all his problems had his own unique style to it and on the whole was far more entertaining. I feel like Waid has always been some really hit or miss writer and people always praise him to be the some god tier writer because of his good stuff but I really think he isn't that good, never has been. /rant

>>
>>93007724
Is this before or after The Ring came out? I think it was after.
>>
>>93008108
A lot of it really is the sheer charm and personality of the Ringo art, IMO. It was also a major recuperation after how far afield Claremont went.
>>
>>93007755
Man, the Lettering in this series is a bit weak, isn't it?

That's the second block of text with no bubble or box, and it's just completely eaten by the background.

I feel similarly about Waid, I don't think I've ever read anything GREAT by him but he is fairly solid with some dips into good/bad territory occasionally kind of like Jurgens

I think my favorite Waid thing is the Flash/GL mini
>>
>>93008108

Current event is a total load where you need to spend 8 hours farming for materials to farm for OTHER materials that you need to grind out combat levels for.

I think it's a naked attempt to force people to spend 12 bucks to buy Bucky, and fuck that.

>>93008212
Seriously, his JLA was trying hard to be Morrison trype wacky/serious Silver Age renaissance era book but he had neither the imagination of Morrison, nor the charm. In same way his FF felt like it was trying to capture that Wally West magic with family values and characters growing up and all but it just felt so flat.

Am I alone in having no interest in reading any current Marvel stuff right now? No company wars bullshit, it's just that nothing looks appealing to me.

Especially the Captain Marvel stuff. In their attempts to push her as some kind of symbol of goodness and hope, they've taken away everything that actually defines her as a character. Let her be an asshole. She has legit entertainment value that way.

>Millar-style satire in Seekrit Empire
Kek no, you're definitely looking for stuff to praise where there isn't any. The biggest fault of SE is that it's taken as seriously and as straight, it could've been the a great satire all around but Spencer takes himself a bit too seriously for that. All the edge and bullshit are supposed to be taken seriously there so Nick can comment on how serious this stuff can get as opposed to how stupid it actually is. Reality right now is stupid dangerous as opposed to seriously dangerous that Spencer is portraying.

The X-Men are a mess. I might've been interested in the Inhumans, if they weren't being fucked over by this push campaign. I hate to sound like that guy, but most of the books seem too concerned with shoving representation in your face rather than telling a story with characters.

Look, I firmly believe in representation and promoting tolerance, but it ain't gonna happen if you shove it in people's faces like this. Your representatives have to be interesting characters with good stories behind them, or else they will be ridiculed for what they are, tokens. You don't get points without effort.

Sorry for the rant, I never get to say this shit outside these threads.

Interestingly enough I can never tell if (or ever) Millar intends his book to be taken as a satire or straight. I'm re-reading Ultimates and there's Bush asking Cap if 21st century is cool and Hank Pym is intentionally being asshole to Janet and Hulk being literally a sex crazed monster andall these guys unironically celebrating their celebrity status and Cap with his "letter stands for France" shit. Morrison in Supergods that it's all supposed to be cheeky and exploitative but then the book in subtext and text is making the whole America's fight against terrorism is a legit venture and considering Millar did follow this theme up in Civil War, I really don't know how much of this is supposed to be satirical and how much should be taken on face value. Maybe Morrison was wrong about it, who knows.
Also Ultimates does not hold up, mostly because of how unclear the text is but also how cringe it gets and how decompressed it actually is.

I think it's pretty much satire, but what also interests me is the degree to which he takes "the Authority are fascists, you know?" and pushes it the genuinely uncomfortable places Ellis didn't by making them always fighting something so x-treme and cool

the best marvel did was a happy accident with kamala because lots people were pissed at a muslim hero and gave her free publicity and then more people started defending her and staning her. the book was actually good so she went somewhere.
thor was more manufactured based off what happened with kamala it seems

Waid's run is loved because of the art first and foremost, but mainly because it came on the heels of the franchise basically being in the shitter.

Claremont was a horrible fit for the book and basically filled it with the Excalibur characters no one liked and not the ones who Claremont never got around to resolving their stories (Sat-Yr-9).

After Claremont left, the book flailed about with a bunch of different writers doing damage control (retconning Claremont's new Marvel Girl into being the Richards kid Byrne killed off in the womb, bringing back Galactus, putting Doom back into play for other writers to use).

Fantastic Four was in such a bad place that Waid's run was seen as an improvement because he at least had a vision for the book, after three years of people cleaning up Claremont's messes and three years of Claremont shitting around the place aimlessly
>>
>>93009310
> wasn't too expensive for KSD

does he not remember that KSD Captain Marvel was a sales flop multiple times?
>>
>>93013810
IIRC Kelly has said that the first volume of her run sells really well to this day but the subsequent volumes don't sell nearly as well.

She said she gets a lot of people coming up to her at cons either asking her to sign their copy of vol. 1 or just telling her how much they loved it, and when she asks if they've read the other volumes they're like "oh, well I haven't gotten around to it yet".

Tbh I think that has more to do with the way "geek culture" works nowadays where people want to be a surface-level fan of everything without going deep into anything than it does with the actual quality of the book, but that's conjecture on my part.
>>
Anybody here liked Shade the Changing Man or Authority?

>>93013967

USAvenger has been dog shit, as was the previous series.

They should have just fucking done an OG X-Force book and not fucking bothered with Squirrel Girl or the rest of the F-List scum they stuck Sam and Bobbie with. Hell, retcon Sam's wife as a whore who fucked a stranger to get pregnant to trap him into marriage, and just fucking end that garbage marriage too.

Sam, Bobbie, Boomer, Shatterstar, Rictor, Siren, Warpath, and Domino fighting bad guys globally would have been far far far better.
>>
>>93009371
To be fair, Ellis only jumped onto the "Authority are fascist" bandwagon out of spite and anger that no one gave a shit about Planetary while Authority went from C-List comic to A-List comic EVERYONE LOVES the moment he ceded the book to Millar.

He'll never outright admit it, but Ellis probably wishes he never gave up Authority and either gave Planetary to Millar or just told Millar to fuck off and cut him out of his circle of sycophants and suck ups rather than allow him to become more famous than he is.
>>
>>93013967
Shade the Changing man is pretty darn good for the first 50 issues or so. There's a big change of scenery after ~31 though, and people who loved the first little bit of the series might be a bit turned off. It really feels like it was supposed to end at issue #50, but continued on anyways.
OP mentioned that she got her hands on about half the run physically, and was considering running it next (assuming that YOU are not OP).
I just realized that Shade the Changing Girl is also coming out this week.
>>
>>93014107
I always though that was bullshit, because of the previous stormwatch endorsed a lot of what would go into Authority, he never really made them you know he never made me go"yup those are people who definitely fascist, thanks for saving us from the rape camps and cleaning up the areas"
>>
>>93014160

The Vertigo Shade book was definitely supposed to end at issue #50 but sold well enough that DC basically reneged on their deal with Milligan to end the book with #50 and told him he could keep writing it or they'd find someone else who would.
>>
>>93014160
It might be fun to read OG Shade just to compare with new Shade and see what gets pulled over. The Shade/Kathy/Lenny dynamic is obviously mirrored by Shade/River/Teacup, but not exactly (teens vs. adults, it couldn't be exactly), the first arc is a lot smaller in scope, Loma is in some ways a much more active protagonist than Rac, the whole Meta-an plot. Shit like that.

In terms of pure character writing the whole middle part of Shade the Changing Man has to be an all-time fave.
