This was actually somewhat confusing:
At first Diana thinks that the whole war is only happening because of Ares' influence and will immediately ends if she kills him. Everyone thinks it's bullshit, because it's obviously a much more complicated matter than one bad guy pulling the strings.
Then, when Ares appears, he indeed reveals that although he was kind of pushing them in the right(wrong) direction, it's the humans who cause the war, not him, but the evil inside of mankind. He says so under the influence of the lasso, it obviously makes much more sense, and this realisation serves as a crucial character development point for WW as well as the main moral issue of the movie.
But then, when Ares dies, all of this goes to trash because everyone immediately becomes friends and the war ends, like if he was responsible all this time after all.
I mean, a slightly longer scene, like the Germans and British first aiming at each other, but quickly realising that it's not worth it and losing the will to fight, a slightly longer "road to piece" being shown, a scene showing the fact that there is still some bad blood between the nations but they're willing to put it aside in the name of piece. It would be much more sensible and consistent as well as emphasising on the moral that although humanity has a darker side, there is also good in men.

Also only handful of nations have nuclear weapons and several have no first strike rules. Not to mention that MAD has been superceded, at least in the US, by NUTS - Nuclear Utilization Target Selection - which holds that the use of nuclear weapons in a limited capacity is simply another point of escalation and will not result in total nuclear exchange.
