Depends on whether you're counting "episodes" as individual segments or the full half hours, but

Mewberty (6a) is when they get more freedom to actually use the magical side of the show more, focus on weirder elements, build up a stronger supporting cast, etc.

Blood Moon Ball/Fortune Cookies (8a/b) is when the overarching plot starts and continues until the end of the season.

S2 is when it gets to a much higher and more consistent overall level, but much of the important stuff in 2 depends on stuff set up in 1 so it's not good to just skip there if you haven't finished.

I heard Season 1 stand out as more bland because Nefcy didn't know if Disney give her green light for more seasons, so she bascially made a random slice of life highschool stories about platonic frineds and magic battles with silly villains.

I have actually started watching this show and amarathoning as of late. So far,many of the episodes of Season 1 do feel like filler only to narrowly avoid being completely relegated to such due to these events having a chance to happen or be mentioned in the future.

I think he put his finger in the wand himself. During that shot just before "Gentlemen, it's been a pleasure" when you see a close-up of Toffee's face and the wand's lid closing.

That's how he became the spirit inside Ludo's wand and how his finger was still in Star's. He's immortal and so when everything but the finger was destroyed, the wand which had contained his finger became his new body.

I think the purpose of his finger is for later reconstruction of his original body so he can stop relying on possessing Ludo (plus the S3 promo suggests he can't do that forever), and telling Moon he's going after Star will lead her to bring Star to Mewni with her. All Butterflys in one place, etc.

I am sure that Toffee was not carrying his finger around. It was already inside the wand sealed away. His entire plan was her to destroy the wand/cleave the wand so 1. He could obtain a piece of the wand's crystal 2. So he could enter inside the wand to corrupt it and drain it's magic passively and 3. So he could connect to his finger, and use that to get his finger back by making it so Star had no choice but to remove it from the wand.

I think he knew that the explosion would happen also, so that Star would let her guard down and not think about Toffee afterwards. Marco was just another tool to him in the grand scheme of things, but he is far from done with him, Toffee will use Marco somehow, he already tried because he offered him the one sandwich that Star tried to get for them before, as a peace offering so that he would possibly let his guard down.
