Quantity: Japan (manga, games, and anime), they know too well how it works so Japanese waifus have a formulaic feel. No less waifuable though. The Top 40 of waifucraftsmen.
Quality: France (band de cine and animated series), too few but they grow on you. A Frenchmade waifu is still special even if you find someone else (you monster). French waifucraftsmen provide a personal vision, so for compatible tastes, unmatched appeal is had. HOWEVER, times have changed since the days I first got into French/Euro material. They lost some nuances that made their waifucraft unique in exchange for surface attractiveness thanks to Japanese influence. Wakfu comes to mind. Nowdays the French are simply solid midrange waifumancers. But they once made unique high quality waifus that were greatly loved by a relative few.
Hit or Miss: America (includes cartoons, games, and webcomics but not cape comics), special because many American made waifus don't rely completely on an attractive or realistic art style for appeal. Sometimes characters not designed to be waifus get waifu'd anyway. The American waifu has much to do with Americans themselves. We have waifus to please everyone, weirdos in particular. And our waifusmiths are as numerous as they are varying in quality. No surprise that flavor of the month is dominated by American waifus, and only Japanese waifus can be as polarizing as American waifus.

So who has the best waifus? Well, Japan does. They even gave us the word. But even though they have the most success, it will be extremely difficult to pull people away from their French and American waifus. The Japanese invented this waifu craziness, basked in it, and live it like it was one of their ancient traditions. But they will never be the sole competitor in these waifu wars.
I say this as an anime-watching, cartoon/comic-consuming, vidya-playing American with a Frenchmade waifu.

And yeah, I think we've got enough Tristepin for a main story, they should start new stories and let him have some cameos from time to time, like Goultard (although in his case his story is still going on).
