Only tangentially related to this, but I'm looking for the name of a Marvel/DC crossover. The premise was that Marvel characters had wound up in the DC Universe, and the first issue had Peter getting a job at the Daily Planet while Supes used his X-ray vision to see the spider costume. I feel like there was also some mention of Norman Osborn.

Picked up the first Superman Golden Age omnibus lately, and I've been pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable some of the early stuff is. Definitely shows its age a bit, and not everything is great (Superman joins the circus), but I've enjoyed howprogressivehe was even in his earliest appearances (Superman takes on a corrupt mine operator)

Supes was very progressive when he first came out, taking out big businessmen and wife beaters and the like. It was only in the 50's he became the boy scout. Regardless of the age, Supes is always at his best as a kind man trying to help make the world a better place.

She's paired with him in Justice League Unlimited, post the Hawkgirl Thanagar invasion of Earth stuff. Given how progressive pairing him with a white woman (even if an alien light skinned female), it did seem he was paired with Vixen simply as a two African Americans kind of thing. Especially for the large number of casual fans who weren't familiar at all with Vixen - I don't consider myself a casual, but I don't generally read 80s comics and I don't read Outsiders or the Bat related books that much, so I had no real clue who she was until I got around to reading the JLA/JSA books that start with Tornado's Path (which wasn't until the past five years or so).
Legends of Tomorrow has the 50s era Vixen with their version of Rex Tyler. Not sure about the CW Seed cartoon, never watched it.

This was from a serial of stories talking about Superman and his adventures. The first story of the book talked about his first failure as Superman: an experimental rocket launched but accidentally exploded, but not before said explosion hid the fuselage in a pocket universe. And Superman swore that he'd eventually rescue these folks.
These pages are at the very end of the book, when the universe is collapsing back in on itself to do another Big Bang and start over a new universe. Superman absorbs all that solar energy and rips open that pocket universe to free the astronauts inside, which for them only had like 5 minutes pass. He sends them out into the new universe as he releases all the solar energy he absorbed to help fuel the Big Bang.

Lois and clark have their ups and downs but time and time again they still manage to end up being together. No matter how much writers like simonson and byrne try to shit on them, their relationship still endure, so much that dc basically said fuck it, gave up separating them and gave them a baby
>>92990022
Let's be fair with Byrne: he had his fair share of importance putting Lois and Clark together after COIE. He made Lois unapologetically attracted to Clark since the beginning of his Superman, and he made Clark propose to Lois.
>>92990200
wasn't he in the editorial that sided with separating them when they mandated it was a mistake? I know that jurgens and ron frenz were staunch clois supporters
it's sad though how terrible and awkward byrne wrote the entire proposal. seriously clark, over lunch? after lois breaks the news that her mom has cancer?
even though I was a happy kid when wedding album came out it was so obvious how fasttracked the story was, there wasn't even time for them to reconcile.

"Superman at 50" is a good one, your library should own a copy.
The Science of Superman is interesting, as is Superman and Philosophy (to a far lesser extent - all of those philosophy books tend to read like some of the essay writers just did them as pay check essays - you can really tell where the authors have given something thought and are aware of canon to really write a good essay, versus those that read like your modern day cliff note/wikipedia report job).
>>92990554
I like the ones they used for All Star Superman - they appear a bit in the animated version of the movie, which is watchable but I can't in good conscience recommend it since they cut so much out of the run.
>>92983968
>They actually did King Superman
Is this show actually great?
>>92991001
I would mainly move the kiss with Lois after the end of the fight with Zod - AND I would have added a scene where they talk about one another earlier in the film - even as someone who knows their history, I found it jarring that they stopped without all the fighting done to kiss in the middle of all that destruction. Friends who came with me to the movie, who aren't comic book fans, who essentially have seen the Donner movies or Smallville - not even animated versions, weren't surprised they ended up as a couple, but all commented that it seemed out of context for them to be kissing there, and not just due to the conditions.
They should also shorten the fighting, IMHO, but that's a modern day thing, which is why everyone says Batfleck was one of the best things about BvS - the fact that they replicated a video game type scene for the warehouse was enough for that crowd to claim it good.
They would have to reshoot the museum section.... I'm not sure this adds up to an entire hour, though. An hour would be about 40-45% of the movie, not counting the opening titles and closing credit sequence.

That's from the Smallville Season 11 comics, an arc when amensiac-ed returned from the dead Lex didn't understand why he had been friends with teenaged high schooler Clark Kent in Smallville. By this point, Clark is about 24-26 and is Superman (in tights and flights and all) and a full-time reporter at the Planet, this takes places during an interview IIRC, or some such.

I think the kiss would be awkward after Zod's death. It would mean he didn't reslly gove a fuck about killing, if he kissed a woman right after.
The kiss was a kiss of relief for seeing the loved one alive during an apocalypse. It wasn't a "let's get a room and fuck rawr" kind of kiss, that's why I think it was fine where it was.
I know lots of people don't like MoS, but to me it was the perfect Superman origin movie, the only thing I would change is the death of Jonathan Kent, I'd have it be a heart attack and Superman being powerless at his side, realizing sometimes even someone as powerful as he won't be able to save others.
I'm also glad I could finally see a live action rendition of a Superman fight like the ones I imagined he would have in the comics I read, with all the destruction that would come with it.

I have some issues with MoS, but I actually respect the decision to frame it as "This is how the world of 2013 would react to Superman." And I think it largely rings true, that people would be terrified of him or hate him as an alien/other.
But I also think the better choice would have been for Pa to be a lot more optimistic about it and really push Supes to be a light and bring out the best in the world despite the fear. And that also showed up in BvS, but it was so buried amongst everything else that it never quite felt as earned as it could have been.

But that only applies if he hides it. If he's honest about having about having blue kryptonite, it would actually make them suspect that he's hiding other types LESS. Especially since Superman KNOWS that Batman at least has access to the green kind. Putting those two in a different place would draw attention away from the other types he has.

I really like Kryptonian naming conventions. Their brevity makes them sound noble and powerful. They sort of remind of old arabic names.
>>93047813
The female names are kind of convoluted though. They get their dad's, or if they're married the husband's, full name as a surname
Kara Zor-El
Alura In-Zee/Zor-El
Lara Lor-Van/Jor-El
Thara Ak-Var
>>93048045
That's fairly typical tho. I don't like how a lot of the female names are really close to human ones.
>>93048101
I guess I generally don't like how many syllables they have.
>>93047290
We've broken through the barrier much like Superman
how do we know which stories are now reborn-canon? Like was the end of engagement arc still canon? I noticed in Reborn aftermath that superdad wore the new 52 suit for a time..
>>93049611
We don't. Until further notice you can puzzle together your own canon.
>>93049611
Same as always, everything is still canon unless explicitly contradicted. And even then it probably still happened in a slightly different way.
What's stopping Luthor from poisoning the city again in Superman For all Seasons?
>>93049611
End of engagement is almost definitely non canon anymore, reborn aftermath basically stated that clark married lois almost immediately after being resurrected
>>93049843
> for tomorrow is still canon
What a terrible timeline
>>93040549
Why does he need that much Green Kryoptonite? And why is that one piece floating with all the special types instead of in a box with the rest?

I think trinity was going to explore on that. If i recall Supes is having nightmares about himself fighting superbro who is refusing to be forgotten and go disappear quietly into the night.
Although we do know that both of the kents are dead like they were with superbro so hopefully they keep the good stuff.
>>93050005
>End of engagement is almost definitely non canon anymore
praise jurgens
I didn't get why people hate Jurgens so much because his current Superman run is pretty ok to good IMO, but the other day I finally got around to reading the TT/LoSH crossover he wrote in the 90s and I get it now.Pic not related.
>>93052707

What's that from? It's a big departure from her usual outfit.
>>93052776
Denny O'Neil's controversial run in the 70s.
>>93052815
Given how people reacted when superman lost the red pants, I can only imagine how controversial that was even if the stories themselves were fine.
>>93052776
What >>93052815 said. She didn't have her powers and went around fighting people with martial arts.
>>93052861
Then why is she flying?
>>93052873
Because it's a dream sequence and she can still fly in Superman's mind, or something like that.
>>92975062
I want to like the art style so bad. But i just cant. It's like looking at all the pages through a foggy window.
>>93052901
Still seems silly. They could have just had her trade places with one of the two Wonder Women on the ground.
>>93052920
I always scenes like this, where even the villains or simple punks have a sense of respect/awe towards Superman. Batman has a similar thing but fear instead, everyone is afraid of Batman, even if they don't want to admit it.
>>92975304

>>93053030
I feel like the Superman/Batman friendship has a lot of parallels to a friendship I have irl. I have massive depression and violent thoughts (directed at both myself and others) but still try to do what I feel like I can to be a good person and do what's right. My friend is an optimist who always manages to find the best in things, even assholes like me, and is all around a great guy who helps me stay one step away from the edge of the darkness that threatens to consume me.
>>92982153
This is fuckin' adorable. I love Clark and Lois
>>93052987
That's one of the reasons why I think it's always been hard for Wonder Woman to find her place next to them in-universe. Out-of-universe, she's the first female superhero, and so people accept her place alongside them. But in-universe she doesn't have the same presence as the two of them.
People respect Superman. People Fear Batman. But Wonder Woman doesn't instill that instant emotional reaction just from her presence.
Then again I haven't read Wonder Women in a long while, so maybe they've fixed that. But the fact that they were able to create these myths around Superman and Batman while coasting on Wonder Women at any point being a women I think hurts the relationship of the Trinity.
>>92982767
Well i'm gay now.
>>93052707
I dunno about the hate, at worst i find his stories either boring or too vanilla. But whenever i wanna feel good i tend to read arcs that were written by jurgens
>>92989910
I always thought the "Superman vs Goku" thing was so stupid because why on Earth would they be fighting each other?
>>93053283
Well, Goku likes to instigate fights with strong people, even when there isn't really a reason to.
>>93053215
>>93053173
More than just respect, people trust Superman as well. He's the guy everyone wants to be captured by because they know he'll do things by the books with as little roughing up as necessary, and usually that's very little when you have his superpowers. I think it's in the Superman/Catwoman team up where Superman is in Gotham and decides to do things Batman's way, when in Rome and all that, but after flying the thug into the air and talking big the guy just kind of laughs and says "yeah nah take me to prison, you and I both know you won't do anything" and he's right.
Wonder Woman has been painted as both the compassionate one and the warrior, but Superman is typically depicted in a much more caring light and Batman is typically depicted as the one that's willing to get his hands dirty. The only way she breaks from them two is she's been portrayed as willing to kill more often than they have. Which isn't really a great "thing" for her to have.

Hate the be the /co/ echo chamber but yeah...

>>93053382

>>93021171
I'm not sure if I've acquired the taste or that actually really works.
>>93054062
Somewhat related, but when I'm explaining to people who don't read comics about how a lot of the hate for new characters taking over for old characters isn't racism/sexism/whatever-ism but simple dislike of change in general I use Superman's trunks as an example. They took them away 6 years ago and I'm still furious about it.

Does Superman have multiple capes? I thought it was made out of the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby. Wouldn't it be one-of-a-kind?

His first cape might have been, but it's been shredded enough times that, even if we ignore the times he's lost or given it away, I doubt there is much of the original blanket left.
