similar thing happened with pokemon, most of the 3D models are lifeless and just stand there because it takes up so much memory to have all the 800 pokemon with several animations just for battle in a handheld game. But they do it because "3D is better". It's not back when 3D was a brand concept and it was cool to have every game like that, you can have cool 2D stuff in games. gen 5 had moving sprites, and with updated technology they could have improved on the sprites instead of 3D models that just sit there. It's different for a handheld because sprites take up less space and they can do more with them. Ever see battle revolution? That game had well animated pokemon 3D models but you can't do it on handhelds because they need more space, especially for a game with more than just a battle mode and on a handheld. But instead you get 4 animations per pokemon, and they all look so boring and stiff and lifeless.
