It had a female main character which wasn't considered marketable unlike the other show they greenlit at around that time, Fanboy and Chumchum.

I suspect that they probably weren't too fond of the dual character role either; Nickelodeon had already turned down Phineas and Ferb multiple times not all that long before then because the double stories in each episode made it "too complicated".

No, because if that were true, Adventure Time would have never happened.
>>
>>92964576
It depends on whatever contracts you sign. In this case, it clearly says that it all belongs to Viacom in this case. Meaning the creators couldn't do anything with it if they wanted, unless they convinced another company to buy it from them.

I really fucking hate it when they add some good elements like Kitty Katswell(an appetizing cake) and then immediately splash a bucket of salt, meat and gravy all over it and tell us to enjoy our cake ruined by meat.

I think like this because I vehemently hated Cartoonnetwork and Nickledeon with their garbage comedy cartoons made for retards.

Whenever a more serious plot would come up they'd waste it with one of their cop-out endings like in PPG and Dexter's Lab. I hated the endings to the rowdyruff boys and the speed demon episode in ppg.

I think like this because back then I had Foxkids and Minimax with far far more sensible and serious cartoons to shape up my tastes, so I never got the stockholm syndrome hate/love relationship most people have for stuff like Ed Edd Eddy.

I think Kids Next Door was the only grotesque looking comedy children's cartoon which wasn't really comedy, they prioritized action, story, characters.
It probably had to do with the fact it was a spy cartoon, so everyone had to act at least competent, even Cookie the comic relief.

It was also because Nick had this retarded rule that a voice actor couldn't have a starring role in multiple shows at a time because this somehow would confuse children. In this case, Mae Whitman was busy playing Katara on Avatar.

This same rule actually lead to Invader Zim being shelved briefly because it was first pitched when Angry Beavers was still running.

>>92964496
What's wrong with exec's brains that makes them so out of touch with what people would enjoy?
>>
>>92964576
When you pitch an idea with any pre-made production/concept art, it's still yours and you can take it to any studio.

When the studio offers to buy the pitch, all property now belongs to them. You will go on to develop the idea and pilot episode until it comes time for them to make a decision if you've been approved for pilot production.

After the pilot is animated, they'll decide whether or not to green light the series. If not, you've just lost all those months/years worth of work and can't ever use those characters again. If so, you get a show.

There are rare instances where people have formulated contracts that allow them to retain creative rights of characters even after the pitch has been bought out by the studio which allows them to continue using the characters even if the network passes on the pilot. Sometimes though, that little clause with make or break a studio passing up your work if that is your demand.
>>
>>92972541
Forgot to mention that up until the pilot is approved for production/to be animated, the studio will often have semi regular meetings with the creator to see how progress is going and to determine whether or not the people in charge are still interested in the pitch. Sometimes it can be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You will do things like stand up in front of a small room of a couple of people, talk about characters, environments, pitch storyboards, pitch episode ideas, etc. It doesn't happen all at once, it's a slow process of showing them bits and pieces as you're developing it. Sometimes the network will send back revision notes and that's how you get things like SpongeBob going to Boating School ("He needs to be in a school!") or Marco having those school two friends that Darcy never uses.

If there's enough interest after months of pitching, then that's when you'll get approval. It very rarely is an instant one-day giant pitch process where someone has the entire cartoon thought out and ready to go.
>>
>>92972541
>If not, you've just lost all those months/years worth of work and can't ever use those characters again

That's fucking dumb
>>
>>92972951
It's a risk, but it isn't like the creator got absolutely nothing in return. The studio does buy the pitch initially, it is technically a sale. Creators are also quite capable of reading the paperwork of what it means to sell the idea and can back out and keep the characters if they don't want a studio to have control of it.
>>
>>92972711
Thanks anon, was an interesting read

>>92972268
they are between 60 and 80 years old, were born into money, grew up sheltered, studied business, never had any hobbies but drugs and whores, and feel more pride if they succeed at selling a godawful product for a profit than they do if they sell a good product for slightly less profit

or to put it another way, they've gotten everything they want their whole life

What's the legal reasoning for a studio owning your characters even if the pilot fails? Not only is it a dick move, it's just stupid.
They weren't going to do anything with the characters/show anyway, why bother hanging onto useless property?

i think the way it was supposed to work was if you were to quit, but they're still running whatever it is, they can legally make it without your permission

It thought it was dropped because the creator wanted unions?

I always wanted one of those shows that seems normal but it's got the spooky undertones, you know? You know that type? Not enough of it. Gravity Falls could have had it but they blew it. Like the over the garden wall type undertones.

The pilot has decent animation, it's a shame about it's plot, it's got some tone issues, can't tell what age group it's trying to appeal to.
The dialogue was way too smarmy, too many quips. VA work was alright, but it lacked a certain edge to it, felt like they were too familiar with each other (the two male leads/elf-boy&Ed-III). and I guess that's the thing, it lacked edge, I'm not saying it should be grimdark, it should just be a little better thought out.

A lot of shows were canned in 2001, when the pilot was dropped. One was ended in 2001 and the others were stretched out in 2004-2005.

I remember when /co/ was obsessed with her for like a week. Maybe less. I always preferred this zombie girl though.
