tl; dr in advance, I'm gonna storytime Moon Knight comics every weekend, if you want to hop in.
In celebration of his latest run ending this week, I've decided to do my first big storytime as a namefag(already did several storytimes before) by making it known(or making it so those who know already, know him even better) to all interested /co/fags on Moon Knight's story.
Created in the 70s as a one-shot villain for Werewolf by Night(I always thought this name was pretty silly, even by capeshit standards), Moon Knight, with his three personalities(Mark Spector, Jake Lockley, and Steven Grant -also happens to be the name of a Marvel writer-)(sometimes, he does have more personalities, but they rarely matter outside of the run they're featured on) has been going on and off as a recurring character in Marvel, going through almost every relevant Earth hero team in the years after his creation, all the while dealing with his schizofrenia/personality disorder. Spidey said it best: "Mooney rhymes with looney."
While this particular run is rather recent(2014), I'm also particularly fond of it for it's simplicity, since it's pretty damn light on words, and because it was also the one with which I started on the character. Some even say that this is perfect for the eventual Netflix adaptation, if he ever gets one. It's not exactly a good representation of what the character's known for, though, given that he only has two personalities here: Moon Knight, regular; and Mr. Knight, a sort of vigilante who helps with thug related crimes and other kind of crimes relegated to street work.
Anyway, after this the plan is to start full-on on the character's lore, since his very first appearance, to last wednesday's issue, which may or may not be the last time we see the character on a run of his own, depending on what Marvel decides. As such, this might take several weekends due to college stuff on weekdays, so let's try to make the most of it.
Enough said, on to the ride!
For some strange reason, 4chanX doesn't let me create threads, so I'll have to turn it off each time. Weird.
I also forgot to mention that this run is rather... episodic, in that it doesn't really have a connected story.
>stuck at 1 second before auto-posting
This has been happening more than I'd like lately, anybody know a way to fix it, or a 4chanX alternative?
the best thing about this artist is that they're fucking great with transition panels and the negative space of moon knight's suit.
it made me want moon knight to just have a white void of fabric when he has it on
>>92953631
No problem.
It keeps happening!
>>92953776
Absolutely. The art gives the comic a great atmosphere.
>>92953821
That sucks.
I really should listen to more jazz, it should be perfect for this.
>you'll never look so good on a white suit while facing a self-enhanced serial killer
>>92954028
This.
>>92953993
>tfw the later issues in this run are only 3x3 squares and rectangles and you never get this good shit ever again
JUST
>>92954028
I can't think of any good jazz off the top of my head besides the Gunpoint soundtrack. It might scratch that itch for you. It's also a great game.
Onto issue 2.
>>92954121
At least the quality of the art stays consistent. Mostly.
>>92954152
Thanks, will check it out.
>>92954194
Do they ever explain where he gets for money for all of this stuff? Some times he has a job and sometimes he doesn't.
>>92954267
Definitely do.
Thanks for the storytime, as well! Been hoping to get into this. Like it so far.
>>92954312
Not exactly, he just does, might just be the stuff he bought with his previous job.
You also have to remember that he's jewish, so that might explain some.
>>92954057
i always liked how the moondisc in his side looks like part of his machinery like it just barely stands out
He also doesn't have an expensive life, outside of his gadgets, as we'll see in later issues.
>>92954366
nah his parents weren't that rich. father was only a rabbi iirc
I can't help but ask how does this cape NOT bothers him when he's on ground, since it looks rather big.
>>92954462
Thanks m8.
>>92954478
True dat. Maybe he just got a shitload of dosh stashed somewhere from his merc/actor days?
>>92954312
It's from when he was a merc. He made a shit ton of money from all the jobs he did.
Tangentially related, but considering how they call him a crazier Batman, and how Bruce is also rich... where does Wayne industries get all its money? I never really knew that, despite knowing Bats for a long time.
>>92954542
This.
Ellis' Moonie is kino in comic form.
>>92954616
They're just really good at everything business for plot reasons.
>>92954707
Is that the fucking casing?
>>92954599
oh yeah, jesus christ I forgot. I thought he wasted a bunch of that money eventually but I'm probably remembering it wrong.
>>92954616
It seems to be a lot of investing in small companies and taking a portion of the profits
>>92954750
And now I'm upset.
Issue 3: spooky time.
>>92954696
Agreed
>>92954750
Sometimes, I can't help but think that triggering /k/ommandos is one of comic artists's main hobbies.
>>92954834
the moon eye makes it look like an old disney cartoon
>cue Ghostbusters theme
This reminds me of Bedlam; especially the episodic nature of it all.
>>92954964
Don't remind me of Bedlam. That comic will never be finished. I should storytime it again and again until people are sick of it or until it gets so popular that Spencer has to get his hands off of twitter and get back to making it again.
I sure hope 4chanX doesn't fuck anything up while I go grab a bit for a while.
And this is what I meant on >>92954389
>captcha minds ellis
The fuckup happened just as I went.
Ain't that some shit.
Sorry for the delay.
>>92955566
jesus FUCK
I'll be honest, this looks more like a mix of mesoamerican-egyptian mix armor than an actual egyptian armor.
>>92955623
I thought it looked more shogun to me
>>92955658
That too, at least on the chest and thighs.
Time for issue 4, one of my favorites.
At least when it comes to visuals.
FUCKING GOLD!
>>92953535
If I covered the Bendis issues tomorrow would you be cool with that?
>>92955864
The best part about this is that he just fucking tosses it into the water like "Fuck this" and doesn't even give it a proper burial. It kinda says a lot about him and what kind of hero he is.
Remember kids, don't do drugs!
Specially in cramped places where a lot of people died.
I really enjoyed the Ellis part of this run.
>>92956076
Sure, why not, I'll have to cover it eventually, but considering I'm starting from the 70s tomorrow, it'll be quite some time before I get to it.
>>92956355
Me too, it was more minimalistic and yet good.
Issue 5: The Raid: Redemption. Featuring Mr. Knight from the Moon Knight series!
>>92956771
curved. swords.
>>92956838
*crescent moon-shaped swords.
>>92956803
https://youtu.be/0mhU8rf7DP4
I'm not entirely sure that that comeback makes sense.
>>92954599
>>92954366
>>92954478
>>92954574
Actually, neither of them.
He gained a fucking ton of money at the start of Bendis run, iirc, or maybe at the end of the previous one, the mini. It was behind the reason why he started producing that TV series that ended being canceled, or maybe that was also a fount of money, damn, I cannot remember that run (Bemndis') well. He has already spent all his money from his mercenary days, and either gained a lot of money with absurd luck at investing in assets, or won the lottery: I cannot remember which one was. So he's still rich as hell, but not because his former days as mercenary (and not because his family, either: they were average, I think)
>>92956076
Why? Bendis run sucks.
I wonder how he managed to avoid the vomit, that looks pretty close for reflexes to help at the angle of that kick.
>>92957098
I also don't get what happened in that fourth panel, but whatevs.
>>92957058
i thought the t.v. series thing was just a weird hallucination that he was having in the latest comics?
Boss fight!
>>92957058
Nope. It's based in the production of a TV series he does as Grant in Bendis run, while he stays in Los Angeles, after all the shit that happened in NY in the previous run. At that point he was by himself: no friends, no girlfriend, and new assistants.
>>92957144
looks like he grabbed the fist coming at him and then just tossed him to the side using their weight against them? the action is weirdly drawn out.
>>92953631
>episodic, in that it doesn't really have a connected story
That can be a good thing.
With most comics always tying in to some bullshit event or having an over-arching story thrown away because of some other event, it's nice to just have a cape doing cape things.
>>92957098
At this point I was staying on my feet in my chair the first time I read this issue. My favorite, aside the one with the fungus.
>>92957152
I meant to reply to >>92957236 but apparently I needed to reply myself instead just because.
>Fallout final boss
>>92957317
I mean... backwards... I think I'm to sleepy to respond.
In any case, Bendis' run is canon thanks to the tripping second arc of the last run.
>>92957236
>>92957317
Damn, I really need to go back and read all of his stuff.
>the graffiti
The artist knew what he was doing.
Issue 6, in which we say goodbye to Ellis and Shalvey.
>>92957285
that's why I tend to love the less popular cape stuff. Barely any events and maybe one crossover and that's it. Plus the writers tend to know what they're doing
>>92957668
>no one knows Moonie's name
the man has various personalities and doesn't seem to keep his identity a secret
Throwing regular darts is one of the silliest gimmicks for a comic villain, though I guess it works in this context where it's relatively grounded.
>>92957800
Maybe he just didn't looked hard enough.
I'm not a big cape reader, but I randomly bought this a few months ago, one of the few western comics I ever bought physical.
Loved every single story, really wish it was a tad longer.
>>92957986
He certainly didn't. He's dumb and it's pretty clear.
Marc even registered when the first CW happened. Most people who care about cape stuff in universe know him, I guess. They also know that he's not well up in there.
OP, don't die.
>>92958060
Yeah almost every cape is seems to make a face when they see or mention him because they know he's potentially dangerous and off kilter.
>>92958250
Shit, I didn't realized the posting stopped again.
Bye Ellis, gonna miss ya.
Issue 7, in which the Woods take the reins.
While certainly weaker than the previous one, I still find it enjoyable, comparatively.
The main thing about this run is that we now have an actual overarching story, instead of the episodic nature of the previous run and the last 4 chapters of the on-going.
>>92954707
>That whitespace
I'm fucking cumming
This run and the next also features Konshu being kind of a dick.
>>92958661
With this arc, you can see how incredible better Smallwood has become. He was just there the first time he put his asr on MK, but while with lemire, this second time, even the way he works with panels is way, way better.
I liked this part, too. The writing wasn't the best, but I would read more of it anytime.
>>92958847
This art instantly pissed me off. Kind of don't even want to read it now.
>>92958846
Now that you mention it, he indeed became better at it, I forgot he was the one in charge of the more recent run.
>>92958966
Understandable, it has it's moments.
>>92958846
yeah, he's definitely gotten better since he stopped doing that weird square grid and adding so much space on the page. It's like 20% was just the separation of the panels. still not as good as the other artist but it's gotten better.
Issue 8, in which Khonshu starts being a dick.
>>92959322
You mentioned square grid? Also, camera gimmick aside, this issue does have a lot of wasted space.
>>92959809
>>92959861
>>92959909
it sucks because I know what he's trying to do but it doesn't work that well.
It might be the writer's fault due to all the words, though.
>>92959271
Panel 5 just looks like they're getting intimate.
>>92959767
I'm guilty of liking this issue, even with the wasted space. The switching of personalities was fun to read.
>>92960144
Yeah, that's the best part about Moon Knight. I love the different identities and how he just goes "Nope, I'm someone else now"
>>92960096
>Freedom
Well, it is Pride Month
>>92960306
ngl, I love this upcoming fight
It's no big deal, but I wonder what was the point of the mask here. I mean, he IS changing personalities randomly.
>>92960336
I don't really think that it counted as a "fight". It's more like another showing of Mooney being the chaotic lawful guy he is.
>>92960365
The first time I though it was to show to the reader that he does change his costume with each personality, depending on what character he needs in each situation. But I'm not sure anynore.
>>92960365
it's not randomly. Each one has their own uses so he just switching to them when he needs it. It happens a lot when he was still doing the whole "various superhero" personas with Wolverine, Captain America, Spidey.
>>92960399
Meant to quote >>92960332
>>92960450
Shalvey's design and all its variatios is sexy costune made for sexy moony. I fucking love it. His Mr Knight is sexy, too. But in a different way.
Issue 9, in which we get flashbacks.
>>92960645
>>92960399
yeah, you're right it's more of a beatdown in this sense
>>92956702
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeVufklHMsA
Issue theme
>>92960626
True dat, I forgot which uses had which, though.
I'm kinda ashamed to admit that I haven't read the pre-2000 stuff, so the 70s to 00s will also be new to me.
>>92960810
On hindsight, that's a pretty good choice.
Have a bump.
Issue 2 of the Ellis/Shalvey run was my intro to the character.
>>92961010
Thanks Norrin.
>>92961268
Never noticed that he changes costumes like three times during this page
Issue 10, in which hobo Mark appears.
I'll finish this arc and then call it a day, for now. It's almost 2AM here, and I had a relatively long day. Plus, I don't want to make another thread for just four issues.
So, tomorrow I'll do the first appearances and Bunn's short run.
Totally not drugs going on here.
>>92962065
huh, now I realize why people have rules against therapists doing this shit
Issue 11, in which our protagonist is put into a non-sensical prison.
>>92956995
What happened to his adamantium gear?
>>92957624
The absolute best telling of a villain origin in comics. One page, only the absolute necessary dialogue, no narration or monologue.
>>92963029
jesus that last face
I can't be the only one who thinks about Hardcore Henry in this page.
Last issue of the Woods's run, and also last one for the night; in which Khonshu is a dick again, and Mark BTFOs his therapist.
>>92953776
yeah working with/using the white of the paper is something a lot of comic artists can't or won't do
>>92963206
translation: we knew people were going to ask how the fuck he survived so let's just say magic
>>92963264
Yeah, pretty much.
>>92963375
god these grids
>>92955658
I just thought it looked spooky cool
Uh oh...
Neat callback to the cover in OP.
lel, the very last page couldn't fit into the thread, so here is a link.

Hope you guys enjoyed it, I'm off to sleep now, see y'all later.
Also
>the very first pic in the thread and the last panel of the last pic are the same close-up on Mr. Knight
POTTERY.
>>92963743
he's probably supposed to be scary in the third one but he looks more tired and annoyed than having an actual aura of terror
>>92963830
thanks mate
>>92963743
>fellow travelers
It's not often I see a dog whistle like that.
>>92963895
how is that a dog whistle?
>>92963921
It's a term for someone with indirect ideological sympathies, usually to Marxism.
The war in Africa here is very much portrayed as a class war and when we learn that the doctor was from the privileged upper class and in it for the money we're deliberately meant to lose sympathy.
>>92953535
>In celebration of his latest run ending this week
O-oh.
>>92957505
>SA:
What?
>>92967443
The one on the first panel says "Nasty". I'd say in allusion to the thug being crushed by the glider-thing.
>>92963872
I don't know, he seems scary to me. It's hard to tell what a mask tries to convey, in any case.
>>92963830
Thank you.
Hated the shift in art, but this was cool as fuck. Thanks man!
Wood's run sucked.
nice reading again, thanks
