I though Seasons 5 and 6 were great, but Season 6 just felt unnatural. All the old writers had gone to different projects, there was a new influx of writers who didn't really get the feel of the show, and the character dynamic suffered with Starlight Glimmer being plopped in the main cast. 2016 was a bad year, and seeing both MLP (and South Park; Season 20 went off the rails after Trump won) decay like that didn't make things any better.

Season 7 has been a huge improvement, though. I just regret spoiling myself by watching all the episodes early on Treehouse (long story), because now there won't be anything to watch until July.

They decided to pander to bronies. The show was great at first, when it was a "girl power series with actual combat but also SOL shit" like Powerpuff Girls was, but then they decided to shit it up by writing specifically for bronies.

This episode shows everything wrong with modern MLP. They took all the shitty fanfic ideas and made them cannon. They named a generic brown horse with an hourglass symbol "Dr. Hooves", and they gave him a scientist job (which conflicts with his cutie mark in canon) and a fucking british accent for a Dr. Who parody, they made a DJ and a fancy violin player live together and gave them the shitty fanfic names the fandom gave, they added a literal horse-mask joke, and that's the tip of the iceberg from a single episode.

When Twilight became an Alicorn it disrupted both the character dynamics between the Mane 6 as well as her own role and dominant traits. She was no longer the level-headed book horse, but instead became this fucking Jesus figure of friendship. Not only that, but the show was starting to veer away from the D&D type fantasy elements it originally had in an effort to make the ponies seem more anthropomorphized (which was made more apparent when the animators stopped trying to build the world within the realm of pastel-colored equine quadrupeds), and thus episode plots began to border on the mundane than the magical in terms of subject matter.
Season 6 was going back up in quality, and 7 is shaping up to be a rebound for the series. Glimmer is a great replacement for Twilight, being much more in line with her S1/S2 role but having a complete different set of traits and background to work with, giving a nice amount of variety to the show's usual flare.

It started slow, then got to the point where it had pretty great potential, then it lost that potential and became shit. Right now we're back in that 'potential' stage with the Lars thing and all that.

It doesn't help that we wait for so long with the hiatuses. It just leads to greater disappointment when episodes finally do air and they're trash.

I just started rewatching Dogtanian this other day and it's fucking cozy as shit.

I love all that 80s shit japan did where they partnered with random countries. Ox Tales was another great one I used to watch as a kid, pic related. Dogtanian was spanish and Ox Tales was dutch I think.

I've heard s2 of dogtanian is a bit shit due to switching the team and voices but so far I'm halfway through s1 and loving it.

Because the show in itself became too much of a meme during S3, having way too carelessly written meme plots about character quirks instead of good morals and cozy problemsolving.
Meanwhile, actual children who didn't care about memes had trouble following the plotlines. My friend's daughter dropped it after S4 for being "too weird".
