Thank goodness I got a good paying job before this comic came out. That would have been a painful barb to read.

It hurts
I even have a brother who is the only member of my family I feel close to
Why did they do a comic about me?
The worst part is I don't see how there could be a happy ending here

Ideally you should get away from your family as fast as possible, they prevent you from growing as a person and finding yourself.
>>
>>92939319
This is true IMO.
>>
I did major in English at a CUNY school, have done Nanowrimo (finished it once), and am looking for a job. But what does it matter if I'm not a cute girl?
>>
>>92939319
I lived on campus at school for 2 years and I never felt better about myself and my relationship with my family. They don't have any room for juniors and seniors though and rent is expensive af in this city, so I need to live at home. I already feel worse. The sooner you get away from your family the better your relationship with them will be.

You guys aren't ALL losers, right? I was kind of shocked at just how many people here related to the page. Please tell me you this place isn't NEET City, I don't want you guys to rub off on me
>>
wow
this is gay
>>
>>92939626
I'm not a NEET (I have a job and in fact I support my family) but I'm deeply unhappy with my life and how I've been unable to realise any of my ambitions. I have an exit plan and think about killing myself most days: I feel in a counterbalance between wanting to die and not wanting to hurt the people I know.

It's been a really long time since I could remember being happy. I feel burnt out mostly, not happy or unhappy but definitely not wanting to be around anymore. I did get upset recently looking at some old photos and remembering what my life + emotions were like then vs. what they're like now, 8 or 9 years on. I've been in bad situations but everything just seems to get worse and what I hate is the idea if I stick with this for another year or two I'll again become accustomed to it and this will be normal, bearable.

This is 4chan though so you should expect NEET city (and probably leave, if that bothers you).

Normally I'd call suicide planners fags but a couple of private idle times I had gave me a bit of perspective as to what drives a person with a good job and a family to off himself.

You go do what you want, but remember that you do have people who care for you. Time for a mid-life crisis and go on a vacation, man.

I did a degree in sciences and my job is in a part of government that isn't at all related - it was all about the other skills such as being analytical, good with numbers etc not just the subject matter.

Got a nice work/life balance as my superiors reinforce not working overtime if possible and limit how much you can really help people or it'll chew you up not being able to find a perfect solution each time.

Nice not to be expected to work myself to death unlike my previous boss who would call you on weekends and if you weren't available you'd be in the shit on Monday...

It wasn't a comment about *you* but about the comic itself. But the fact that you took it as being about you says a LOT about the kind of people that post in this thread, and probably the kind of people who wrote and read this.

I know nothing about this comic, btw. What's sauce?

I'm be interested to read it just to see if it really is as bad as I think it'll be. I'm not talking about the art or writing, but the point of view it espouses.

It's shocking to me the way people in this thread are saying they "relate" to the character, because the things you say you're relating to are the thoughts, feelings and actions of an incredibly shitty person.

I'm totally honest, this is my immediate gut reaction to this thread. I really didn't come here to troll, as disingenuous as that sounds.

I hate how the collective unconscious is misunderstood by pop culture to be some kind of psychic phenomenon. Jung was a crazy mystic, but he was also a legit science guy (as far as that goes), the theory of the CU is derived from Darwin-- It's basically a set of inborn symbols and patterns that are common among all people, which therefore give the *appearance* of psychic phenomena, due to the feeling of shared cognition, but it's really because we all share the same mental circuitry.

This isn't the place for this but back in the 50s factory workers' wives didn't have to work. Fast forward to today and even lawyers' wives sometimes have to work. I guess you could argue it's only in pursuit of an opulent standard of living, and they could get by with a single income if they settled for less, but by the standards of the 1950s what they could afford with a single income was pretty opulent compared to what was historically available.

The only reason college is even a requirement now is because they're not allowed to use IQ tests to choose who to hire.

Things are becoming so automated now that we just don't have jobs for everyone. Nobody wants to admit this, but there's a large contingent of our society who has NO prospects. Nobody wants to hire them. Nobody CAN hire them and turn a profit without some kind of government subsidy because they're so inept.

I'm someone who believes humans have a deep need to feel like they're doing some kind of useful work, but there is going to come a day when there's so many people out of work and so few jobs that this phenomenon is undeniable. What do we do then?

the notion is that your father probably wasn't born middle class but he worked his way up there and now you, born middle class, have a better education, healthcare and opportunities to succeed. You struggle for upper middle class and when your children are born upper middle class they'll struggle for lower upper class.

tl;dr

your dad finished highschool
You finished college
Your Kid gets a masters
Your Grandchildren are wealthy doctors.

You have to look at it from her perspective: she tried her best and failed at graduating. She tried to get a job and failed, and now barely even tries at anything because she knows it'll end in failure.

When you spiral out like this, you don't bother because you know that, no matter what you do, it will result in failure because YOU are a failure.

When Gwen needs is some professional help to get her out of the spiral, like a therapist. It doesn't help that she feels like nearly everyone left or hates her. Her brother's the one who helped make a breakthrough with her.

Humans have to have responsibility. If you refuse to take it on, you should get punished. That's the way the real world works, and (good) narrative should reflect that.

It IS treated as a fault on her. Her parents are frustrated, she's seen as lazy, she doesn't put in an effort with handing out her applications, and she's not even making an effort on things she actually enjoys.

The book is making Gwen sympathetic and showing us how and why she feels so bad, but she's still in the wrong. It's not trying to justify her behavior. In fact, she ends the issue deciding that she'll try and turn her life around.

But she still needs a therapist. Depression is a bitch that needs to be kept in check.

Most of the people who can't graduate High School are failing because of things like skipping classes, apathy, or just a general rebellious nature against the school and/or parents. It actually doesn't have much to do with mental capacity.

America. If you're American then you probably haven't seen the truth yet. School isn't there to help you learn. It's there to keep hoodlums off the street. That's why it's mandatory. I just saw a summer school program advertised that you didn't even have to fail to take. It was literally just school, but in the summer, so their parents don't have to deal with them, and it will probably become mandatory too in the future.
School was made to teach kids how to work in factories, but now factories are obsolete because of machines or run by adults, but school still hasn't changed.

>Nothing you do in highschool actually matters, so why bother?
Grants, scholarships, etc. Makes the cost of college less burdensome.
In practice, you only learn in college how to sharpen the skills you already have. There's nothing new there, only some polish and refinement if you have the fundamentals figured out on your own. The people who haven't yet arrived at what they want to do with their lives are hurt the most by the "career student" meme, as they start from the ground floor with no skills and end up in permanent debt with only a passing knowledge of their target career, which only places them one step above untrained labor in the eyes of prospective employers.

The bubble has burst, diplomas no longer guarantee a job. So if you didn't start as an autodidact with a deep interest in whatever curriculum you take in college, you've doomed yourself to a life of misery in debt with no possibility of gainful employment. However, if you realize you don't have any skills and put off college to find your interests and learn them practically first, you may find that you don't even need to go and will be happier in every conceivable way. Especially for skills that have fallen out of favor with educational institutions but remain in high demand, such as drafting and architectural design.

Really, college is a fast-track for those with a path to follow. For everyone else, speeding along the gravel path of self-discovery only leads to stress and misery.

More students need to realize that college is about getting you a job or setting you up for grad school which is there to get you a nice job so you can move the hell out and live your life. This should be taught in high school, seriously.

Only detached privileged trust fund babies believe this meme, I'm a 2nd generation Mexican American and immigrants (legal and illegal) snatch up every entry level position you can think of beyond "cleaning le toilets XD"

Yard work, factory work, retail, fast food, warehouse, construction, you name it they're fucking in it, and once there's enough of them they gradually become the preferred hirees due to the cultural and language shift in the work place. Similarly, asians takeover a lot of nicer areas and it essentially bars off any work you can get there above custodial positions since they only want to hire other asians due to their own cultural and language preferences. Also they're racist as fuck and make red necks seem open minded.

Oddly enough Trump scared a lot of illegal farmhands away and now there's plenty of well paying positions open to replace them. I'm actually considering picking up sticks and moving to bumfuck Bakersfield just to get in on that action but knowing Jerry Brown it might be a short lived dream.

The economy that allowed one man to support a decent sized family on one wage was a flash in the pan, historically. It really only existed for the parent's of the boomers, and maybe a few of the boomers themselves. It should never have been assumed to continue.

That said, automation is a problem that isn't going to go away or get better.

That's the attitude that prevents you from success. You should pursuit work-life balance AFTER you have accomplished something. It is supposed to be a corrective for people who work so much that other aspects of their lives are damaged. It seems that for you is mostly a pretext for laziness.

But sure! Keep feeling sorry for yourself based on how tired you are IMAGINING working hard for something.
>>
>>92943872
That's because they don't. School is to keep you stupid, and held back, while telling you "you should do better" but doing nothing to help, because it isn't their job to help. It's their job to keep you stupid, but make it look like it's your fault and you aren't trying hard enough.
The only acception to this are the core classes you learned in 4th grade. After 4th grade the classes get bigger, and I don't know how anyone in their right mind could think putting 20 kids together in the same room could help them learn anything.

>>
>>92945979
This should be the case for 14 and younger, but once you're 15 and 5 years away from being an adult, you should start being able to gather life experience. You can't gather life experience when your surrogate mommies and daddies hold your hand. In this case, I'd say skip it, but that's illegal. It's illegal to leave school and get a job because you have to stay in school to get a job someday.
>>
>>92946085
actually, all of those things are legally possible. You'd know that if you did your homework, Timmy.
>>
>>92946063
But he's alive, isn't he?
And that isn't actually what a coma is. You're thinkig of someone who is brain dead. A normal coma is just a deep sleep. "A corpse with a heartbeat" is an oxymoron. The definition of a corpse is a body that has been dead and is probably starting to rot a little.
Someone can be in a coma, but their brain can still control all of their bodily functions, like breathing, heartbeat, etc. Deep comas are where machines start intervening, then deeper than that is dead tissue being kept alive by machines.

>>
>>92946806
>School isn't for smart people.
No shit. It's for everyone, you fucknugget.

Concepts like advanced calc, chem-I-stry and physics are more difficult to learn and have to be taught. If you can learn those concepts, you can apply them elsewhere. Like when you get retards that cry about them not teaching taxes in school and bak at calculus. If you can do math, you can figure out your taxes, no problem.

>in home ecc or a parenting class, which teach basic life skills.
Almost anybody can cook food, even my 8-year-old nephew, and home ec already teaches kids plenty about basic concepts with cooking.

Nobody can teach parenting properly because every kid is different. You learn as you go; not even 30-somethings are prepared for it, so fuck knows why you expect a 15-year-old to be prepared. The concept of a parenting class is a crock of shit and only sounds appealing to morons.
>>

My grandfather didn't finish Highschool in the country he was born in but years later once he had more time and money he went and finished Highschool in Canada. I'm 22, live with my parents, got evicted a few years ago, are living hotel to hotel until we find a place that takes us, my dad makes inconsistant amounts of good money as a construction worker, but is fucking awful with money, my mom barely does anything, I've never worked a job and I have no idea what I want to do with myself. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm a loser.

Usually everyone does shit jobs like cleaning or customer service at first. Then they get hired for better jobs later. It just looks kinda bad on your resume if you have never worked anywhere at all and expect to get hired for a nice job right away - the recruiters may think that there's a risk that you're somehow unemployable or don't understand that working can be shitty, that sometimes it's hard and yada yada.

Like I know a law firm that had a practice of hiring only people who had at some point worked in care, as in they had had to have spent time cleaning hospital floors or tending children or at least have worked in customer service or something, because it "builds character"

If you're the sort of dick who won't get a job at walmart because ew fucking walmart it says something about you and your team spirit and work morale, essentially, in their eyes. You take shit jobs at first to prove that you can deal with shit conditions and can work as part of a team and show that yes you have experience of working, showing up on time, understanding what it means to have a supervisor and rules and so forth

In my experience employers always specify that they're only interested in work experience directly pertaining to the field you're going to be working on, or experience that you can in some way convince them that it gave you skills that would be useful to them. So in that case working menial jobs is worthless, but as you said, it probably varies with some employers.

Maybe Jung shouldn't have been so goddamn obtuse and shouldn't have used his own symbolic language that doesn't actually convey the meaning of his words. Then he wouldn't have been misunderstood by physics and crystal wavers.

Frankly it seems like a lot of experts from the past were just all about the masturbation and obfuscation, they didn't make their works easy to understand intentionally, even though they could have boiled down the premise into a couple sentences.

That obfuscation is because the separation of science, religion, philosophy, arts, etc... is a more recent development. Specially in things having to do with the mind, people doing research on the subject in the 19th and early 20th century had mostly philosophy to base their stuff on. It is only recently that we more or less understand the brain.

Go work inventory.

All of you pathetic NEETs that have fingers and eyes, work Inventory. It is a terrible, awful job, but if you can hack it there for any length of time, you can justify yourself to pretty much any employer. And it's one of the few Entry Level jobs that's actually fucking entry level. They don't care if you've never worked, they don't care if you've been arrested, they don't care where you've been or what you done. Just pass the piss test, and you're in.
>>
>>92948061
>or experience that you can in some way convince them that it gave you skills that would be useful to them
Yeah, it's just that having zero work experience from anything looks kinda bad and it means you're a risk, if you've never worked anywhere, not even daddy's firm, it could be that you have serious problems with authority or understanding responsibility regarding job deadlines or general conduct in the workplace or whatever

Of course when you do have a selection of past workplaces, they care more about the relevant ones and not about that one summer you worked at the coffeeshop at the corner at 19 - but sometimes it matters, and definitely it's much better to have some work experience than to have no work experience

figure out some way to spin your degree into something slightly employable and just outrageously apply to jobs you feel you're underqualified for
Also try to get a foot in the door through interning in an interesting company and network with the bosses there and show that you can work. It's almost always the same thing, no matter who I talk to everyday. "I hate my boss." "I hate customers." "I hate my hours." "I'm too tired for anything but dinner and sleep." And then they turn right around and go "You should get a job!"
>>
>>92950496

Because youtube, Tv and modern culture in general has sold us the idea that we should do what we want and make money from it. We are so afraid of being seeing as "working class" that we rather be NEETs than getting an entry level job at Walmart. Everyday, through social media, we cruelly make fun of those who appear to have shortcomings, just to feel less inadequate. Meanwhile, all our friends and acquaintances broadcast their perfect "creative jobs" lives. We rather die than admit we are not "the one"

As a big fan of literature this pisses me off pretty bad, whether fictional character or some of my friends being a little dim. Like writing a book or making a living off writing is just NEETing it up and every few months you fart out a completed manuscript. Holy shit your parents screwed up badly.
>>
>>92942259
OK, your parents screwed up HORRIBLY. Fucking boomers, seriously. How old ARE you that you've never left the house on your own? Fucking hell!

Thanks to them, you have to do an entire childhood's worth of maturation in a few months. I have nothing but sympathy.

But here's the rub: you HAVE to do it. You won't always have anyone to help you, and you'll NEVER again have anyone to do everything for you. You are a victim of the Oedipal situation-- a parent who devours your soul because they can't bear to be separate.

That they're putting some pressure, trying to push you out on your own now means that they realize this too, and it sounds like they're like mine were-- helicoptering until they were like "WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING" and then just sending you out. Doing everything in the most incompetent way imaginable.

So, my advice is that once you get an instant of separation, take it all the way. Get a job, get an apartment, find some friends who you might be able to room with, and GET OUT. It isn't about supporting yourself-- it's about claiming autonomy. They'll probably waver on this, at some point they'll start to "feel bad", then they'll take you back in and nothing will ever change.

And this isn't the end of your problems either. The job market is pretty bad right now, there aren't even any subsistence wages available for the unskilled, and barring some miracle it'll probably never get any better. So... In your free time, develop a useful skill. Go HARD with it. If it's something you need school for, sure, go ahead and take classes, but college IS NOT a ticket to a good job. Except for STEM stuff, College is a Ponzi scheme.
>>
>>92956544
You WILL have to do this stuff eventually. It is much better to do it in your 20s than in your 30s or 40s. People will cut you slack when you're a kid. An employer might decide to take a chance on you, or a landlord might cut you some slack rather than throwing you out. When you get older, you'll just be allowed to suffer. Nobody gives a SHIT about you in your 30s. An old infant disgusts everyone. Not even your parents will suffer you, unless they're really lonely and literally have nothing else.

Also, I have one more recommendation. This might not be for everyone, not everyone is going to resonate, so take or leave it at your leisure.

Start watching videos by Jordan Peterson on YouTube. He is a nice smart dude who tells it like it is, and gets almost everything right. He's been working his entire life figuring things out, and his conclusions are probably the most USEFUL general advice I've heard anyone give.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04wyGK6k6HE

Don't be thrown off by the fact a lot of right wingers like him. He got popular because of a political thing, but he is NOT a political commentator. He's a psychologist, and he's the most internally balanced person I've seen speaking anywhere on anything. If your mom and dad had 1/1000th of this guy's wisdom, you would not be in the situation you're in now.
>>

We're headed towards how the people in WALL-e lived and it'll be great.
Doing anything ever is for chumps.

Unless you have something to make you forget the truth of your life, you will feel like you're dying every moment of the day. You will grow to resent everyone who had it easier, scrambling with cognitive dissonance, desperately scrambling for excuses, why all of this wasn't your fault, you were deprived of your birthright, and your sorry state doesn't reflect your true value as a human being.

Well, the problem is that you can make a damn strong argument for that, and you'd be right, at least partially. These things are so complicated, nobody really completely understands why things unfold the way they do.

But the truth of the matter is that as bad as things are, you have the choice NOW. Maybe you'll never be a millionaire. Maybe you'll never have a college degree, maybe you'll never make six figures. But it will be better than what you have now.

That voice in your head, those fantasies of just being OK being a loser, styling yourself as The Dude from that old movie, those push against any attempt to improve. Those images that flash in your head... Those are sub-personalities. They are literally a segment of you that wants something you as a whole may not. They will argue their case, ask "what's the point?", and "why stress yourself out?", and "you'll never really gain anything worthwhile."

And maybe they're right. I can't tell you what's best for you. If you want to be a tendy-boy forever, who am I to tell you no? No stress, no responsibility, no feeling of loss, only a yawning chasm of emptiness (though I admit this may be less of a problem for other people). I'm not saying these things rhetorically.

But the thing is, you have to choose, and you'll have to live with it today and tomorrow and 10 years from now. It may only be a problem for tomorrow-you, but you'll be that person before you know it. Don't throw your life away on a bout of teenage nihilism.

You fell for the college meme. I am truly sorry. Grieve for your misspent youth and missed opportunities as long as you have to. I'm not being sarcastic. It's helpful to mull it over, pound it home so that the knowledge seeps all the way to the bottom of your soul-- that piece of your life is really and truly lost. Could've happened to anyone... Some people get cancer at 40, miss out on 20-30 years of life. Sucks bro.

Older people think that college is enough because that's all THEY needed. Workers were in short supply when they came of age. Employers were pressed-- a kid fresh out of college was all they could get, and they were GLAD to have it. Things have changed so fast, and things have never changed this fast in all of human history (excepting maybe times of great political instability, and hey, maybe we're in those times now). Older people, unless they're REALLY smart and with-it, might not be able to really guide you like they would have previous generations. Be VERY careful taking their advice.

Can you even join the military without a GED?

I'm speaking from experience here. I'm not some obnoxious idiot who thinks I can tell everyone else how to live, dropping my pearls of wisdom from on-high.

I don't think so, but I'm pretty sure they help you if you don't. Also, there's the ASVAB, which is an IQ test in everything but name. If you've got anything to offer, the military will fall over itself to put it to use.
>>

Thanks man, I actually considered Joining the Navy as an alternative, but I think I have stomach problems and the only thing the ASVAB told me I was qualified for was Infantry so there goes that. The thing that infuriates me the most is that my older alcoholic brother keeps sending me news casts that the border patrol is in desperate need of border agents and yet just to get that they want experience. At times I think that I should have died and not my only well rounded brother.

>Don't throw your life away on a bout of teenage nihilism.
And what I mean isn't just "don't throw your life away," it's if you're going to throw your life away, only do it after making sure that you're ready to live with what comes with it.

Nobody tells you this, but it's hard to know the consequences of your actions when you're young. People just don't tell you these things anymore. I don't know if it's just impolite, or maybe the people in charge never had those problems.

Nobody told me how easy it was to end up in deep regret. It was always "do X and you'll be fine, now stop bothering me the game's on!"

If I had it to do over again, I'd definitely join the military. If you're someone who has trouble motivating yourself, I've seen it work wonders. Just being forced to stick to a schedule for a while would have helped me a lot.

That's pretty much the only thing I desired: Control and order.
When I was in school I pretty much had a set schedule to distract me of worries. But now I have no schedule, which is really distressing for me. I've lost the control that I had tethered. The one thing that I created. Now I had to find a new distraction: The internet, video games, comics, and my own anger
