In their defense, I think that they are saying that whether a woman wears a hijab or not should be their own choice alone, which I do agree with. They're trying to make the hijab represent independence and a sense of control over what they wear and how they present themselves in general.

It would be bad if they were saying that it should be mandatory for all women to wear hijabs whether they wanted to or not like in some other countries, but that doesn't seem like something they're saying.

At the end of the day it's a scarf. In a free country it's meaning is up to the individual. If a muslim woman is wearing it of her own accord and feels it's symbolic of her submission to Allah and modesty. That's her choice. If someone feels it's a symbol of oppression, that's theirs. and they're free to argue their points as long as they wish and in the end it won't change. And neither is wrong because it's entirely subjective. She could very well have been raised in a household or come to her own understanding where the Hijab meant that. And the other person could've come to the conclusion that it was an invention to oppress as well.
