He preceded Nixon, so he definitely had a lot going for him. Then he pardoned Nixon, so that was pretty much it for any hope of re-election.

That being said, I would still take him in a heartbeat over the last two republican administrations.

Even the "best" presidents had their moments of shame, really. Because they were all human beings, imperfect, just like the rest of us.

Some of them were worse than others, sure, but there was never a perfect president, and there was never a perfect anything, really.

It's a sobering thought.

>>
>>92925963
How is it flawed? I agree with that anon. We can feel that one's worse than another and we can say we personally know better after the fact, but there really isn't a gauge for comparison within the US.

Now we could compare them to other world leaders which make similar decisions in the same time frame, though.
>>
>>92926952

Jackson completely and utterly destroyed the economy towards the end of his presidency, ruining the legacy of the much better president Martin Van Buren, who had to spend his entire presidency cleaning up Jackson's mess.

It's funny, Van Buren and Polk were both excellent presidents, very intelligent, competent politicians who knew what they were doing, and both were proteges to Jackson, who was a raving emotionally unstable madman who spoke the common man's language, i.e. swearing and screaming and threatening violence when people disagreed with his opinions.

Lincoln was a great man who did great things for both the country, and the world, we're undeniably better off for having had him in office, and would be better off if he had stayed in office and not been assassinated, but he was a bad president.

He was a totalitarian fascist, a benevolent one, yes, but a hardcore fascist none-the-less. He believed in preserving and stengthening the union above all else. Above the rights, freedoms, and prosperity of the american people, above any political ideal or philosophy, above the lives of his citizens. If preserving and strengthening the union meant imprissoning people with discenting ideas without trial then that's what he did. If it meant silencing the press and free speech for promoting anti-union ideas then that's what he'd do. If it meant using crushing, brutal military force on his own citizens then that's what he'd do. If it meant not freeing the slaves, then that's what he would have done.

He was a great man, with great intentions, and did more good for the country than almost anyone else, but he was the embodiment of what the president isn't supposed to be, and gave president and power to future presidents who would abuse that power to terrible effect.
>>
>>92940682
Fair points. But he wasn't James Buchanan who did nothing to resolve the tensions of the pro/anti-slave sentiments while letting the country slide into the mess that was the Civil War. That Lincoln led the country out of the Civil War and might have been far more conciliatory with the Reconstruction terms than Johnson was what makes me think that he was one of the better presidents, if not the platonic ideal of a president.
