How are you going with that webcomic of yours.
Also come laugh at people who suck at drawing and other guys as well.

And if you don't have a webcomic, post your favorite webcomic.
I don't want my fave thread of 4chan to die on me, man.

Is it really necessary to have an elaborate backstory? Can I just have my characters have normal ass upbringings, or will the readers just spaz the fuck out immediately at the idea that origins aren't the be all end all to my cast?
>>
>>92896851

Finally. I was waiting for this thread to pop up.

I need a title for an assassin (she's not human) who strangles her victims with her tendrils (a humanoid tentacle monster), snaps their neck, or sucks the life out of them. In history she's described as a shadowy figure that makes no sound, like a void or a plague that enters a room and kills everyone inside without a noise and leaves no trace.

I guess for a comparison think slender man but more ethereal and subtle. Like a plague or a shadow. Like a ghost or a banshee.

I already have her real name, the name her handlers have for her, and even her 'mobster name' but I need a title that has a willowy and mystical feeling. For legends and bed time stories in the world.
>>
Let it die, OP.

based on homestuck and it hurts, i thought I might be able to do a comic without being good at drawing. then i thought more and realized that was fucking dumb and even shitty homestuck drawings are better than what I can do and they're surprisingly decent in a minimalist way.

which thought was right? right now I'm assuming they're both wrong and this whole thing is fucking dumb and why bother but that's probably wrong too sooooo who cares
>>
>>92898011

That is highly dependent on the story in question. Character history provides and understanding of motivations and personality.

Art doesn't have to be good, it just has to serve it's purpose. If your art sucks, but can accurately portray the feeling you want to get across, then I don't see why anyone would complain.
This comic 'arc' by plasticbrickautomation is one of my favorite comics, the art isn't the best, but I have no complaints. The author has a sense of direction, and a story he wants to tell.

Thanks, I'll check out arc and see what you mean. It's just discouraging that even "bad" art takes talent/practice/whatever far above my current level, and between guitar, this, real life, getting fit/strong, friends, and my own entertainment, I'm really just treading water. Staying in the same place never moving forward unable to hold on to anything slowly losing the things that make me keep my head above the water in the first place until I'm so exhausted that I have no choice but to let the waves carry away the things I hold dear as I watch myself be pulled along by the tides without even the illusion of control afforded to me by my dreams, dreams I can no longer bear because that second between waking and sleep where I'm not sure which was which is followed by a second where I know, absolutely and completely, with no delusions or bias or anything but stark reality, and every day it breaks me.

I really should have put this in the initial post but I'd like to avoid actual names of mythological beings that have an identity of their own. I already have plenty of characters that do/and are loose representations of religious or mythological characters but I try to keep their names more subtle than their 'real world' counterparts because they are more based off of them rather than a good representation of what they're supposed to be. Most only ever go by the names of the languages of the races in my story anyways, so it's actually rather hard to tell. There's also canonical reasons for that too but that's spoiler talk. (also the other name I have for another character already lol) But thanks for the suggestions though.

If anything the character in question is basically urban legend/folklore tier and not as 'epic' as say, Mnemosyne or Vulcan. It's a lower tier mythological being. Maybe even creepypasta level of 'fame' despite her actual capabilities.

Kinda like a backwoods serial killer tale you'd tell around the campfire with a little bit of whimsical ghost story.

>>92899680
I like a lot of them but some feel a bit too…'powerful and forceful'. But they are good nevertheless. Thanks.

>after a god of death or some historical figure or folklore beast

I meant an in-(your)-universe thing, not a real life thing. Like if there is some death god, have the people think it's her or they name it after her or something.

Or like some historical dick killed a bunch of peeps or had some tragic shit happen to him so peasant bitches gossip about how "oh that evil dick tyrant fucker banged some half demon maid and then ruined her life and tortured her or some shit and melted her mouth off with acid so she can't speak or make any noise now but he fucked it all up and now she's super evil and immortal and shit and she'll fuck you up too especially if you keep stealing my god damn CLEARLY LABELLED lunch sack, JERRY, you lazy eyed lunch stealin son of a bitch."

but like I said, i don't know what your worldbuilding's like so idk if any of that could be adapted to your world or not. hope some of this has given you something to work with. or not i guess

Question.

Would it be a bad idea to have one character go by two sets of names? Starting as one then change to the other as events unfold but some people still refer to him as the first name.

-Continents with different landscapes depicted by different shades of gray.
-I plan to add a light blur to represent the Ozone

Guys i was looking at Tyrone's channel, and one of his videos sent me to this guy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDM-LQL8sag

This reminded me a bit of a dilemma i had recently, you see t the other day my little bro showed me a bunch of channels like this that he follows, what surpised me is that in my poor naive country, guys with this level of quality work doing "animation" for the big let's play youtubers of my country and they get a good amount of money from it

little bro has a a channel with a little over a thousand subs, he asked me to draw a little animu profile pic the other day and then told all his subs i drew it

Now apparently their subs want one too and ill get 3 american dollarydoos for each one

i just accepted one request right now to test how this works

is it a good idea to start taking request even if you are not at the level you would like to be yet?

i mean the "animators" my bro showed me were really on a lower level than me but already taking request left and right, but the thing is i have set my bar really high and i haven't reached my goal yet, taking request makes me feel a bit hacky
>>
>Finally drawing seriously and consistently again

Hell yes it is. You are now getting paid to practice. If you're worried about ruining your brand, it's not like you're using your real name (I assume, cause that'd be dumb, but what do i know).

You'll get other peoples opinions, you'll work on things you might not have otherwise, and it can be decent money.

Space troopers dispatched to a planet to sort shit out. What starts out basic quickly turns out more complicated, as leaving the planet is harder than landing. They gotta sort out what's keeping people from leaving, all while negotiating with aliens, saving colonists, surviving fauna, and figuring out an ancient mystery.

I originally intended this to be a quest on tg, so I had reader interaction in mind. But it started to get bigger than I intended, and /qst/ suddenly became a thing so I figured I'd go the Prequel, Awful Hospital, Problem Sleuth route, and make it a somewhat interactive comic instead. People could make the MC specialize in different things by way of flashbacks to bootcamp establishing the characters skills.

But would doing such a thing be worth it? I've planned it out enough that it could feasibly survive without people giving directions, but I sort of liked that as part of the fun of quest style storytelling I liked drawing stuff on request, and still do.

Additionally there's formatting issues, would I have to do it that one panel at a time style? Should I do it full on pages? A bit of both?

It Hurts!! ending has really inspired me to finally get off my ass and do this thing. I'm just fraught with doubt in general.

This question is only marginally related to the thread but fuck it. You guys give good feedback.

I'll be doing an on the spot drawing demo from sketch to finished piece using ink and markers. There will be multiple opportunities for the audience to ask questions, but I know not everyone wants to ask a question in front of 200 strangers. I was thinking I'd explain every single thing I'm doing as I'm doing it. Is this annoying? I've always found voiceovers really helpful, but maybe it's not the case for everyone. What learning methods work best for you?

Also I was going to do prizes at the end to reward the people who sit through the whole thing. I currently have a set of Sakura Micron inking pens and a set of skintone Copic markers. Any other ideas on prizes?

Interactive comics are fun, it sounds interesting, and maybe you can play with the style. I don't know if /qst/ is the same, but the quests on /vp/ are intercative and have full comic pages in reaction to it, so it isn't impossible.

As for the faceless goon, I'm a huge fag for those kind of characters so I'm really liking your guy. Best of lucks on everything!

you're gettin' it now. Remember that the nose and brow and stuff like that stick out a little, so when a head's turned, they'll be further forward than usual. The nose won't still look like it's directly between the eyes anymore, right? because now the head's turned, so it'll be closer to the "Far" eye. this is how we keep faces from looking totally flat. i'm currently working on that myself, but with eyes. i'm used to drawing them totally flatly.. but if you can get eyes to look like they're also rotated along with the head, and have shape to them, it looks damn nice

My rule of thumb is that good writing/jokes can generally carry bad art, but not necessarily the other way around. That's how we end up with things like 8bit Theater, which is literally just copypasted sprites.
That said, good artwork is always a bonus.

The most important factor is consistent updates; a slow or inconsistent schedule, or constant hiatus will kill your comic, no matter how good.

I thought bringing the gun into your body when disarming and throwing was a bad idea.
Trigger fingers and clumsy shots tend to fire off when the gun is being handled by more than one user.

I meant to show the barrel to be pointed past both their bodies during the lift before the slam, but it probably read wrong.
Also, I'm no disarming expert, so I just went on what I've seen on youtube and threw in some embellishment for drama's sake.

I sought out opportunities to work on my art outside of my job like trying out in a OC contest, but work got in the way of that ultimately. And as it got shittier it just got harder.

I'm actively trying to make it more important in the wake of losing my job.

I dunno... My job didn't used to get in the way of my art... but the more miserable it became the more it did. I feel if you do work that is at least, stimulating without being taxing, you can make art one of the things that rejuvinates you at the end of the day.

Its easier to mix art and work when work doesn't make you bored or stressed.

I have question for writers. how do you do it? I've been trying for years and literally cannot get a single first draft of anything finished. I've tried analyzing stories I enjoy, I've read books about writing, and written several pages worth of very small individual scenes involving different characters from different ideas, but I can never piece it all together.

where are you, and what time of day is it and what mood are you in when you actually sit down, focus, and write a good story? cause it seems like the act of actually setting out with the intention of writing something is the biggest thing that prevents it.

I'm an illustrator and I've tried telling myself that the reason I'm having trouble is that visual art and writing are two different disciplines and I just need a writer, but plenty of artists write their own comic strips and those fucking faggot Japs can write and illustrate like 80 volume epics all by themselves and it just blows my fucking mind. how do you do it.
>>
>>92906909
the pain of it all. gotta back up, man.
>>
>>92907044
mostly i roleplay, except by myself. which is how I do everything anyway
writing is basically just taking what should be a boring and terrible version of a fun thing and making it work, in a way that other people will enjoy reading later despite not being able to participate. but some part of them will wish they could
just sit and imagine what you'd do in the place of every character. then once you've gotten that all down, the harder bit is writing things no actual character decided, like just things that happened by chance. but you'll start to go back to their POV and think "i sure hope such and such doesnt happen" and you as the writer can go "hahaha, it will. now you have to deal with that"

Don't.

>>92907044
What aspect of writing are you stuck on?
>>
>>92907044
I've only been able to do that the last 2 years or so and the only reason for that is I sat on my ideas so long I finally had enough material and then I combined ideas from my stories I knew would go nowhere. I don't know, I take inspiration from work, friends, personal issues, I keep in mind to remember these things as soon as they happen. The experience of one's day is a prime resource for writers.
>>
>>92907169

also it was an external drive, and the reason it got fucked up is i didnt hit 'eject' before turning it off.
>>
>>92907082
that sounds like an excellent approach and I will try it. I think my problem is finding the proper way of establishing a plot. Sometimes I read (or watch) stories and when they really engage me I feel like I can imagine my own stories with those characters involved - which I guess is the same thing that inspires people to write fanfiction. I want to figure out how to establish those characters and situations on my own.

>>92907169
>What aspect of writing are you stuck on?
I'm not sure how to explain it. I always come up with these small ideas or scenes that feel like what would be incomplete parts or scenes from a bigger story. They involve characters I have imagined in my head already and have previously imagined in other situations as well. So for example, I might have two characters fighting about something. I can imagine where they are, what each of their motivation is at that moment, etc. but I can't figure out what leads up to that. I try brainstorming and just imagine what happens next, but my mind just goes blank. I'm just not sure how writers progress from moments like these and eventually turn it into a full story with themes and symbolism and shit.

>>92907193
I do that too. I try whenever I can to see potential story ideas in the interactions I have with people, the places I see and what I observe in the world in general. I think I might just be intimidated by the idea in general; I've tried writing shorter, less complicated stories and even short little comic strips and I can't see them through; that's what has me so discouraged lately. but yes, every moment is valuable.

thank you all for your advice :)

Anyway, I'm personally too selfish to let anyone team up with me for a story. But if I did I would do it by paying the artist from the very start. And tbqh that should be the best option if you can't draw for shit and have enough money, and that sad pepe anon should consider this option.
>>
>>92907044
I just close my eyes and imagine the world and the characters as vividly as if they were real. Like daydreaming but focused on what you want to write. If you've got a clear vision of the characters and the world their in, stories will basically write themselves. Start from there and start developing the main thread once you feel more comfortable.

Alternatively, you could come at this the other way. Once you've got your characters and your world, start at the end. Imagine a payoff or some big scene you want to write, work on that. Once you have it, it just becomes a matter of filling in the dots. The ending is almost always the toughest bit to write in my experience so having a good idea of it from the start is great (plus it lets you really layer on the irony and foreshadowing and whatnot).

Either way, write down every single thing that you think of, then come back to it later to decide what to keep and what you want to happen, then rewrite it. And make sure to go through it from the beginning every so often so you know it all makes sense and stays engaging and all that.

The japs have assistants and shit, plus they have a super shitty work culture so don't look to them for career advice.

It's totally fine to just be an illustrator, they are totally different skills. It's always going to be better to be both, in the same way a decent guitar player who sings well is in higher demand than better ones who don't, but there are shit loads of writers who can't draw so you'll be fine.

>>92901921
Just have to make it clear, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to show why and to also show how stupid it can be. The bad guy for my first story arc went by a cover name very close to his real name--because nobody was looking for him directly in the group he was infiltrating, so he could be something close to the familiar. Now in the present he's referred to by people who did figure how his deal as Con-guy rather than Connor or Conrad; and they think it was pretty stupid of him to hide under a name like that, even if none of them know why.

You want to minimize confusion.

>>92898024
The Breath Drinker
Or by association, could just call her a Boo Hag. People don't get to pick their titles, and anyone who knows what that is proper would be scared while those who don't will think it is stupid.

Interesting topic of names going on here.

I think a lot of this also depends on genre and setting. In a fantasy setting, you can have the Prince of the Dwarves, Heir to the Throne Under the Mountain, the Foe-Biter and Bane of the Foe's of Durin's Kin. In a more modern thing you have Davis from Accounting who goes by Dave on the dating sites, namefags as Chip'n'Dave on /vp/, and wishes he had a cool name like Tyrone.

In fantasy it can be read like a litany of ones deeds and accomplishments, in a more modern setting it is compartmentalized based on who is interacting with the character. If that character is our focal point, that's less of an issue because we'll get different people call them different things.

I haven't worked on my videos for like a week. I think now that I'm so close to finishing them I'm getting more nervous about it. When I'm dealing with small individual resources it's easy to fix mistakes but when it's something so complicated and investment heavy it becomes really stressful.

How do I get into the mindset to just FINISH things without getting stressed out about it? I'm confident with my art and animation skill but there's no way for my writing/delivery to be effectively criticized out of context so I know the only way to really move forward is to just finish it and move on but just can't get myself to do it.

What are your preferred methods to improve on writing?
On the subject of writers and artists,
If I had to pick between being a writer or an artist, I would definitely say art is my stronger suit. I've voluntarily drawn for a fanfiction story though, because I was a big fan of their story, and it wasn't too long. I really liked that dynamic, because we were both fans of the original book. The book gave a lot of liberty to characterizations, it wasn't super descriptive in terms of looks, background story, and the aftermath. At some point it kind of felt like we drifted too far from the source material, so why not try making something original? I lost touch with her, but if she ever wanted to try writing a comic, I would not mind drawing for her.
Maybe you can ask Vigor Mortis, or the Circle Jerks team, how they met and work with each other.

>>92914803
The sooner you post your video, the sooner you'll get fan art (from me at least). I mean I'd do it now, but give me something to work off of!
>>
>>92915443
It's just my three protagonist getting into trouble due to their personalities and traits, I want to make it episodic. So in one chapter they're discussing over cheese and in the other there's a mecha battle that destroys half the city. I want to be able to have this creative liberty
>>
>>92915666
So lets see... you don't have to worry about story, since the comic can be one situation one day to the next.

Also again whats the story here, what do these characters do? Are they superheroes, ninjas, pirates, ghost? What's the world like is it big, what's the era of the world future, past, present? Did you plan out what the first episode is like? Can we see a sketch of the environment? The people? The powers? The villians? The plot? Storyboard?

I know this sounds complicated, but you gotta start somewhere. Just telling me the 3 characters have conflicting personalities isn't enough. How does this affect their world and them? If it's like an episodic comic this'll be easier...

Just make a page or two to the best of your abilities and show me what you're doing...

If you were a writer and sent me a description like this, I'd be flabbergasted...
>>

>What are your preferred methods to improve on writing?

Mostly? Reading.

An example from life; my father runs an accountant office and he had to outright tell one of his assitants to read some fucking books because her redaction skills were shit and she was making awful paperwork.

I'm not joking when I say reading books is a huge help when it comes to writing, because in a way you learn how to work dialogues and descriptions that may help either your artist or yourself when it comes to what exactly do you want to show on the visual aspect.

Of course you have to be picky on what do you read tho. You won't take Twilight nor 50 Shades as the greatest example of literature to base your dialogues on (unless you want to do a shitty teenage drama comic).

So after you read some stuff, then you practice your writing. You will see how it comes out all by itself.

Glad you're still around! Man Erin is just not having the best of luck lately.

On the topic of multiple names, I mean you got it great with your Aethon-man-eater guy. I'm reminded of the instruction manual for zelda 3, wherein the japanese version for the first time expanded his name from ganon to ganondrov, and the american one went extra distance and decided to bullshit up two (pretty cool sounding) aliases, Ganondorf Dragmire and Mandrag Ganon, which they also bullshat up a meaning for. Sadly the incorrect romanization -dorf has remained, but people are aware the rest is non-canon.. but it SOUNDS cool, and you probably wouldn't get confused about who those two different names referred to since they sound similar.
Meanwhile I used to get confused as fuck about who "Jack" Kennedy was.

Thanks! Yeah I guess I'll use my "fans" as a motiv to start this. I've got a surprising amount of fanart as it is so I wouldn't want to let anyone down. I guess I'm just worried if the first episode isn't so great everyone will lose any interest they had.

And as for your question, I agree with the other anon. Consumption of other works in general can help tremendously if you're analytical and observant enough. Whenever I'm trying to plan out stories or dialogue I try and think of a really "satisfying" similar example from other media and try and figure out what made it so effective and why.

For example the comic I'm working on is about a team of newbie space mercenaries gradually unraveling the plot of an alien menace and following his trail to hunt him down. To help make sure the story was enticing and fun I tried to think of what made "Men in Black" as enjoyable as it was since it had a roughly similar plot-line and themes. Not exactly fine literature but it helped me streamline the story tremendously. Obviously you don't want to straight up copy things though.

That's so broad. Is it just a normal romance story? What's the setting? What type of characters? What location? What time period?

any, I think a broad general prompt would be fun and light for the individual creators here to work on and share.

Hmmmm what if they have to work together on something because they're the only ones left unpaired.. some kind of competitive thing, or maybe...
maybe they're both young adventurers looking to cut their teeth, but the quests board only has shit too high level for them, so they reluctantly decide to work together.. and surprising everyone, instead of bickering, it turns out they work perfectly together right from the start.

>>92922268
then as they get older, the boy feels like they're losing their spark. in a bid to rekindle their passion for one another, he plans to confess his feelings to her, only to find out she was cucking him with his best friend.

i'm happy with the absolute most we can get, we've never had an unproductive thread. but i think weekend sounds best, with the caveat that anytime a thread dies on the weekend we make another, even if it's sunday evening.

Overall, 9 arcs are planned, though the last two could fold together into 8. We're doing pretty good for one arc a year, and honestly its pretty good portfolio material. We did get an agent because of it.

But yeah, three in-universe years.
Spring (Conrad), Summer (Aethon), Winter.
Spring, Summer, Fall.
Winter, Spring, Summer.

Honestly the next arc will be nice, more direct conflict and stakes for Jam and Beatrice. Plus the kids having been getting into shape with Craig for the rest of Summer and Fall.

>>92926488
>B's backstory.
We touch on it more next arc, as Beatrice's character this arc is her trying her best to take control of a bad situation and coming to realize she's bad at that. Mostly because she put Guy in charge and she's been very shady and let Craig slip away. Next arc is her coming to terms, and the fourth arc is really about her trying to fix her backstory--in a bad and destructive way, because she isn't great with doing things any other way.

And yeah, it is a personal preference situation. Works better in some scenes than it does in others, but thanks for reading it.

>>92919043
Erin's character is to be the worst possible person out of the three, and we'll get into the heart of that more next arc. But given that she apparently had sex while underaged with one of her dad's friends, and Scott only dated her because he thought she had a penis, and the whole Conrad fucking her so he could try to screw over her dad---she doesn't have great luck in general with love which contributes to her being more okay with being a shitty person to people in her life. So Dan's fucked.

Honestly I still don't see it. Everything bad in her life seems to be something she went into with good intentions and got screwed by someone bad.. Well to be honest, life's been kinda getting in the way of me making my comic. I take art commissions mostly, for my income, and my latest paid project has been taking up all my time.

But I think my biggest problem is that I'm stuck on the writing. Every draft I make feels like it's "lacking" something, that the events don't really fit together. Just filling in plothole after plothole. I'm pretty good at world building and thinking up character pasts and personalities... But actual full STORIES? It's like a brick wall.

1. Google: "character goal obstacle" . Pick an article you like.
2.Write a short story. All the way to the end. Does your mc have a clear goal? Does he overcome the obstacle?
3. Google story structure.
4. Edit your story: does it have clear acts? Can you find your inciting incident, end of first act, midpoint, beginning of third act, and climax and resolution ?
If not, edit.
5. Keep practicing.

I need names for 2 fictitious drugs. This is in a cyberpunk 80's dystopia with aliens and stuff.

Both are hallucinogens/stimulants and are considered 'Class A drugs'

One is based off an altered form/dead of a virus that was designed as a bioweapon against a particular species in this universe's equivalent to WW3. Since most species are (usually) immune to its lethality, it's used recreationally for it's cannabis like side effects and is consumed by inhaling it, much like "nasal insufflation" and smallpox scabs. Some even light up blunts due to misinformation, thinking it'll enhance the high. PSA's often remind the population that what they're smoking has lead to millions of deaths in the old war, and that by continuing to use the drug, that war may never end. Not that anyone really cared.

The second drug I'm not sure what form it would be. I was thinking it would either be a pill that could easily be mistaken for candy, or a berry that can easily be mistaken for a healthy and safe treat. (which sounds better) yeah it's part of the classic 'mixer upper' plot in a gag/filler strip It'd be a mixture between ecstasy and LSD and shrooms but potentially more potent.
>>
>>92943730
are we talking the real name or the slang name? because the slang is easier.. the virus one would be called 'fect' or 'fection' or even like 'vax' if it's deadened
>>
>>92943818

Either or. I suppose the slang for now, since that'll be used more often.

Sadly my crippling laziness is preventing me from working on it, but I started lifting and have been making some progress, feeling motivated to continue.
Thinking of releasing pages in a 'bomb' format, like Steven Universe. 7 pages at the end of the month.
>>
>>92943856
yeah I'd go with something like 'alduenza' for the virus and fluorolaminaketamide or something so it gets called 'flakes' when sold as little candy-lookin' scrapings. nice and distinct looking too. other nicknames including like dandruff/druff etc.

There's people who have been making webcomics for over a fucking decade and their art has gone to complete shit, or was never good.
If you start spending your time improving your artwork and practicing your ass off (and I know that you can do this), then you'll be at the very least better in drawing.

She's good, but I think she's got too much bank space. I think you should try making her anchor tattoo a sleeve tattoo or just a bit bigger.
Try adding a seam to her trousers or pockets, maybe laces to her boots.

Basically I think she just needs a little more detail, and be careful how you draw her massive arms, they might look weird where they connect to the shoulder if you're not careful.

Thumbs up overall though.

A boy falls in love with a girl. Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl’s phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well. But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush. Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

I get some reference and try again and ffs, do yourself a favor and look out for symbol drawing- you can let it slide with some shit, but not with the face. The mouth has to be properly constructed and stretch across the skull, the eyes have to sit in sockets and so on. Think on it before your sleep. The answer will come.

Personally, in the past, with something that important- I would drop everything and study/practice that shit until I could do it. Even if it took a month or two.
If the people in your life aren't worried that you draw too much- you don't draw enough. You know it's true.

Working on the next page now. Colors looking okay? Should I darken the colors on her, make her stand out a little more?
>>
>>92960953

Basically, though really what they want you to do is figure it out on your own, as I frequent there, and there is an overwhelming horde of "hold my hand" type of newcomers to drawing and art.

Most people don't want to put the work in, and after drawing three pictures they expect to become masters, or expect to see huge amounts of skill progression. In general, they think it's just easy to draw.
>>
>>92959475
Both here.

I decided to learn to draw because every time I collaborated, the illustrations weren't as I pictured in my mind. I'd rather have full control than something that I didn't want.
>>
>>92960740
Honestly this. People can debate which is more difficult, art or writing all they want but the truth is even mediocre level art takes a far greater time investment than most writing.
Drawing a single full color page takes me about 8+ hours, and that doesn't even take into account the time spent doing studies, thumbnails, and designs to plan out the chapter. In 8 hours I can usually hammer out the beginnings of a script, and given another few days I could do a lot of rewrites and editing.
>>
>>92959475

>>
>>92962385
Well, I can't really do than now since i put it all on the same layer.
>>
>>92962350
I mean, you can improve pretty quickly if you take critique to heart. For example, that guy who used to draw those odd muscley Batman comics improves with every drawing he posts here because he actually uses the advice he gets. It's one thing to make incremental improvements, it's another to shrug off any suggestion and keep drawing in your own shitty 'style'.

Not taking shots at any particular artist here, just speaking generally.
>>
>>92962887
figured as much
technically you could, it would just involve judicious use of the lasso tool, since after all if you darken black, it stays black
no worries though
>>
>>92962970
I think whatever a person chooses to do, they've chosen it. No amount of obedience to good instruction will do any good if it's reluctant. And I'm a little sick of style being bashed, and conclusions being leapt to. That also discourages people from following advice, since it removes the carrot from the stick entirely. It's never okay to contradict someone on their own thought process, no matter what you suspect they're hiding. Just wait, they'll confess it eventually. But not til you stop accusing.

>>
>>92959475
It feels like as an artist I'm just doing work for someone else. Like, it feels like I should be getting paid.

Like if I was the programmer/modeller/whatever for a videogame paired with an "ideas" guy. Art in comics generally just takes up a lot more effort than just writing.

...That and the fact that I'm creative enough to have my -own- ideas, and want to draw my -own- stories. It's hard to find someone who wants to write what I want to draw.
>>
>>92963098
There's nothing wrong with style so long as it isn't used as an excuse to avoid criticism.

Your characters legs are too short
>Muh style
Your heads are too small for the bodies, your characters look weird
>Muh style
Your shading is way off, that building is casting 2 shadows at 2 different angles
>Muh style

In that respect, coddling is even more harmful to a growing artist than forced instruction because they'll never know what they're doing wrong. I'm not one to demand that you grind Loomis and grind fruit for a year. I personally believe if you're seeking to improve then you'll see your own shortcomings and search for the solutions yourself. However, you have to actually be LOOKING for the issues. Don't get complacent, don't use your style as a shield. Be open to learn and be accepting of criticism. You don't have to read 3 books on anatomy to learn how to draw stump legs like Farside, but Farside also has consistency in all it's proportions.
>>
>>92963481
but don't you see, your criticism is also just saying that's your style. it's how it makes you feel when you look at it (except the shadow thing. that is a legitimate technical error). Not that your feelings aren't valid, it's good to say "if you were going for intimidating here, it looks more cute because of X" or vice versa.. but make it clear it's just your feelings.

i've never seen any evidence of the harm of coddling. not that I support it (I've never even seen it), but anyone who brings it up seems to be weirdly controlling of others and screaming about something imaginary. I mean you have to take an individualized approach to each person. Let's face it, a lot of artists have... eccentricities. What works on one won't work on another, so you can't use blanket terms like 'you have to be looking for issues in your work' or 'you can't ever be complacent'
and I think people like John K would probably say consistency isn't that great. Certainly in the case of the Far Side he could have used a little more experimentation.. except nobody reads that for the art. Or if they do, the art's meant to be comedic, not 'good'
And also fuck John K anyway. But he's richer than I'll ever be.
>>
>>92959475
Main one is all the writers I've encountered so far are equal or worse than I am.
Second is they have to have something else to offer like shared interested, their body, other resources excluding writing, or just be a good writer.

You have all right to judge me, but if I need to get a "feel" for the medium. Then making a comic this close to heart isn't gonna feel oh so good when I see I'm lacking the comic making experience.

That is why I decided to illustrate any and all ideas I can, whether its someone's idea or mine.

If I spent hours just storyboarding 1 chapter thats bad! If I can't show proper pacing and panel sequencing that's bad! If I can't use the page to entice and appeal to my reader to the story THAT'S bad!

By all means your right, I saw a comic page that didn't excite the reader because

>it didn't even have characters

So what do you think a guy like me, who wants to entertain the hell out of someone's suppose to do? I don't want mediocre, I don't care if the comic gets money, or fans, or even if it's top ten.

I made this comic cause I wanted to wow someone, and give them something to read. What I showed you didn't grab you.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. Like you said, if there's legitimate technical issue, it warrants having attention called to it so that the issue can be solved. If you're drawing semi-realistic people for an anime style for example, and by habit you draw all the forearms too long for every character or the legs too short, then you've messed up and need to fix it. That's why we're here isn't it? to work, learn, and progress so we can eventually make it. You don't have to be Alex Ross to draw a comic, but you should at least TRY to be better than Buckley.

Lol, you want me to do intensive frame by frame animations for what are basically just game reviews released only weeks apart, while ALSO managing a frequently updating semi animated webcomic with nobody working on them but me while also maintaining a near full time job? Yeah right.

And it's not like I'm making something ultra simplistic. This is an example of how things will look all together. I am confident that the way I'm doing things is completely justified.

Though I guess the fact you called me "anon" probably means you don't know anything about what I'm working on so that's ok.

A good tip I've read plenty of artists say is to focus on the character's shape and silhouette. You should be able to differentiate a character from others even as a black shadow.

Also depending on how realistic or cartoony you want your story to be, focus on exaggeration or features and clothing. Change the size of eyes and noses, the shape of the face, etc etc.

I've been giving this some thought, actually. I initially felt like the tone should be more comedic and somewhat light hearted, hence why a more cartoony artstyle would work.
But on the other hand, I've had some ideas for things that would happen, that I do sort of like but are rather dark and might tonally stick out too much (such as meeting a character who uses illusionary magic to create a mental asylum to hide in). Another argument against using a cartoony artstyle is that I feel more comfortable (and more used to) drawing in a more semi-realistic style.

Still way out of the loop with practices and whatnot. This was an attempt to design how my characters looked a few years ago. This was part of a side story I wanted to make in colaboration with a fellow artist, but said artist is going through some tough times, so I'm not optimistic enough to count on him.
In any case, I still wanted to make the designs, and put some stuff I've been practicing lately, and I know the results are not there yet, but I had fun doing these, so I may try to do some more practices sheets for each character, get used to them.

I suppose it also depends on what kind of character you want to make. In mine I have some characters go through morbid circumstances and behave more…I wouldn't say 'realistically' but with more maturity. These characters are generally designed to be more realistic looking while those typically not involved in the serious portion of the plot are generally more exaggerated. For serious topics its best to have some form of realism. In order to design a character you have to understand their personality and purpose they have in the narrative as well as the context and environment they are placed in. You should be able to tell everything a character is about by their look, but that is half the battle. You have to ask yourself how that character is different from similar characters in other series. Something as simple as a hairstyle can convery a lot about a character. I'm obviously not an expert in character design and I still have a lot to learn, but there are plenty of sites that can explain a lot of this stuff in better detail. Unfortunately I don't have links since it's been years since I've looked at them but I don't think it'd be that hard to find.

Alrighty then, at the risk of embarrassing myself over my poor dialogue skills I will present a hypothetical situation with the characters I have the most difficulty writing for. I'd like to preface this by the excuse that saying that this dialogue isn't meant to be serious and by extension realistic (I have a much 'better' time with more serious writing with more eloquent and mature characters). So I want to focus the critique on what is, in my opinion, a weak point in my writing. My goal here is to try to understand how to make entertaining and engaging dialogue during the times of the plot that are supposed to be less serious. You know, character building shit that actually makes you care about or hate them. But I've rambled enough;

Girl A is the harder of the two for me. She's hotheaded, crude, dense, and one of those 'how can they be so smart when they're so dumb?' characters. Has a hard time understanding or caring about social cues. Cusses like a sailor. Most stuff I write for her seems forced and even…America like. You know the one (minus the Spanglish).

Boy B a bit easier for me. He's a sarcastic jerk who's supposed to be the voice of both the audience and reason. Both enables and dissuades Girl A's behavior depending on the situation and his amusement. Does actually have a moral compass and limits to what he'd do (heart of gold and all), but for the most part he's a trouble maker and a bit of a bully at times.

Girl A: Ok, so you know that fucker Mr. Anderson?
Boy B: Can't say I know a guy that teaches our class every d- *Girl A slaps a sticky note on his forehead, abstracting his view. He takes it off with little regard or reaction and reads it* Wow, that's like two whole days of detention more than the ones you had last month.
Girl A: Dipshit gives me the slip for what, fucking firecrackers in the lockers?
Boy B: The ones you LIT in the lockers.
Girl A: The ones you said could be lit without me getting in trouble!

angles can really do a lot. Both the upward profile and downward glare.. but you still have a long way to go, especially looking at those puffy pants.
it can be really hard to get used to drawing puffy pants with an upward curve when seen from below (or kind of a .. balloon-knot / top of a pumpkin shape) because you're so used to terminating them with a downard curve due to the saggage. i know. i still do that frequently.
>>
>>92976974
well for one thing, i'd go with fuckin' over fucking in that last use, because your eye reads it as if someone is having sex with fireworks. the (for) is already implied after the 'not', so having to rely on too much more context overtaxes the sentence
>>
>>92977089
I was also being rather indecisive about what angle I actually wanted to portray here. I can't help but feel like it looks like she's about to fall over.
>>
>>92977267
Yeah, it's rare that it's appropriate to actually switch angles as you go.. though there are some fish-eye-ish times when something truly immense will be that way

In any case, I think the greatest crime here, the only one really worth altering the page for (because you're not going back and fixing old pages, not with this many) is that when you ran out of page, you just decided to end the legs. a natural thing we all do as kids, but not correct in this scenario. it looks like she's standing ON the page border. at least her left leg should be running right off the edge.
>>
>>92977359
Thanks for the advice Anon. I don't really like to go back and alter pages I've already published though, I'd rather learn where it could've been fixed and just move forward with the future reference. Otherwise I'd just be fixing stuff forever and never turning a single page.
>>
>>92977526
Indeed. I only fix actual coloring errors or typos.. or that one time I made a word balloon leading to thin air because I didn't draw the character in because I couldn't decide which character should say that, then I just forgot.

Girl A slaps a sticky note on his forehead, abstracting his view. He takes it off with little regard or reaction and reads it.
B: Another detention? That's two more than last month.
Alternatively, B: That's two more than last month.
A: Mr. Asshole-son gave me detention for putting firecrackers in the lockers.
B: You mean the ones you lit in the lockers.
A: You said it wouldn't get me in trouble, Dickhead!

I think the dialogue explains too much of the context. I understand that you want her to swear a lot, but I think excessive swearing is pretty forced. The only example I can think of that does it pretty well is South Park actually.

I'll summarize what I absorbed from the three pages, and if there is anything missing or conflicts with your initial thoughts when making these pages, maybe take it as a sign that there could be something done differently. I guess I'm just putting this disclaimer here because I want to set up guidelines, mostly for myself, on how to comment on a page, for future reference.

Main boy (main character, MC), is in likes girl A (main heroine, MH). MH is a pretty girl, who is oblivious to his affections, probably his existence even. MC is kind of a nervous kid with low confidence who isn't a genius, as evident with breaking his lead, not being to able to answer the question, or even attempting to answer the question. Or maybe he just knows the teacher is calling him out on not paying attetion and he doesn't wanna be a know-it-all shithead.

Design-wise, MC's hair is a bit unorthodox. The hair at the sides of his face make him stand-out. If you removed him, I think he would blend in more.

Art is good, proportions seem to be in order. Gestures, poses, and placements are interesting. Backgrounds are plain, but if they aren't an important aspect of your story then it's okay.
Page 1 is good!
Page 2, I would try to put more emphasis on the girl, this is the first time we see her. Maybe give her more panel space, draw more of hery body, focus on a aspect of her face that really catches MC's eye. I like your decision to keep the camera angle at the same place between panels two and three.
Page 3, panel 5, there an emphasis placed on the teacher that I think is unnecessary. Maybe move that hand/ruler into the previous panel and have panel 5 focus on MC. Panel 6 also seems a bit unnecessary, I could see it being placed in a corner of a panel with kids getting ready to pack up/some kids leaving.

Thank you for this detailed analysis! You basically got the characters down (aside from the girl being the female MC, which should hopefully soon become apparent in later pages.)

>Design-wise, MC's hair is a bit unorthodox
Yeah, I wanted to avoid having a completely generic harem mc, since while he's supposed to basically fit into that archetype, he's supposed to have his own development and not be a self insert/blank slate character, so I wanted him to look a little odd. I might play with the design with his hair some more, though, since he does have a really stupid haircut.

I'll try putting more focus on the girl in pg 2, I was having trouble finding a way to make her apparent beauty come off right so I'll take your suggestion about extra panels. Moving the rule to the previous panel is also a good idea, I'll try that out. Pg 3 panel 6 is supposed to be a scene transition panel so I think I'm keeping that, though.

But really, tysm for this detailed critique! <3
(I wish I could get this every day ;-;)

why not give the main character a dickhead bobcut, like the protag from detroit metal city? That's pretty ugly and it would break up the mold of an harem setting easily. And it would really break away from his actual character.

morbid dark comedy? As long as it's not fucking suicide for hire, it's all good. I tend to hate harem anime since japanese relationships are fucking boring.

>I think the dialogue explains too much of the context.

That's my fault really. I have people read through my scripts and go 'Oh what does this guy do?' when I try to make it really obvious what's going on so I have to make it even MORE obvious. It rubs off a lot in my writing now. Either I'm bad at explaining the context through my writing or people are just really not observant.

>I understand that you want her to swear a lot, but I think excessive swearing is pretty forced. The only example I can think of that does it pretty well is South Park actually.

Nah, I've gotten that a lot before and I try to cut down on it. She's really the only character in the story that swears to this extent. Or just in general. It sorta just slips out when I get in 'the zone' so I often overlook it and have to go back through later and cut out the swearing.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Is it even possible to write a likeable protagonist? In almost every single situation the side characters are ALWAYS better? Why is this? Is it a subconscious thing where we always take the character with the most screen time for granted?

Eh, don't really wanna give him that kind of cut since it's so associated with the look of an asian nerd. Plus, I want to make him kinda cute/pretty because I just enjoy drawing cute boys tbqh

>It's similar in how it starts out as a generic high school flick then somebody fucking dies and the story goes off the deep end.
That's pretty much exactly what happens. MC-kun dies midway through the chapter, but is brought back to life Frankenstein-style by a mad scientist girl who is obsessed with romance, and wants to help him find true love

>>92982755
I'm honestly not sure how to do it either, a lot of my drafts have been a bit depressing so far, but I'm just trying to roll with it. Also nice to see more from you, Gloryhol anon, your stuff is fun

lol what the fuck??? Holy shit that might be stupid fun to read. Undead mc.

Anyway, thanks for the lift up man! I always post stuff on here but i rarely go with a name on this threads. I know that namefagging can be badly treated here.

dont worry about putting the main character in the #1 most likeable character spot. like you said, sidecharacters are always better
that's good! if it wasn't for that, you wouldn't need more than one character. Main characters have to be less than all-you-need and then you flesh their life out with other people and events.
>>
>>92982620
This is something I always worry about.
My main character (Kiera) is the one who I've put the most thought into in terms of a character (Nearly triple that of everyone else combined), but my other characters are always the ones friends and others who read my comic like.

I want to comment, but I'm making dinner right now. In the meantime, here's a red line and some a small hand guide! Please take my advice with a grain of salt, I'm not some master at art or anything, but what I draw I consider passable.
Find a way to simplify your construction, it will help keep consistency in the long run. I like to think of the torso as a sack of flour, this will help in cases where you have draw torsos with a twist. Limbs are drawn in 3D rectangles to remind you of dimension to keep yourself from drawing them flat. The hand can be broken up in a trapezoid-like figure, and a triangle for the thumb.

I dunno most readers seem to prefer the protagonist the most in my comic. They love the other characters a lot too but they really identify with the MC.

take a mass of completely unrelated characters and make the most insane shouting match bullshit you can think of be the driving force of the story
also draw the entire thing with whatever you off hand is

They're reviewing/editting a music video. It doesn't seem like anyone wants to be there, except for Ezekihell, who is striving for beyond perfection. They do it again.

I think the pacing is good, two pages to communicate that information is pretty spot on. You're also attempting some interesting perspectives (top-down), I like that!

Page 1, panel 1: Gengis Khan is one of my favorite Mongolians. Move the "cut" speech bubble to the panel before it.
Page 2, panel 3: Speech bubbles here are a little confusing, it seems like Marie's brother is saying both things.
Page 2, panel 7: Tails on the speech bubbles don't seem necessary. Consider tailoring text to fit the character though!

I think my biggest beef is that Ezekihell also seems like he doesn't want to be there. He's the one with the complaints, so I think I'd rather see him more angry than annoyed. Or maybe, sad, disappointed, just something more passionate than frustrated, see attached pic.

I think the poses that really need some work are the girls sitting on the couch and Ezekihell's arm (page 1, panel 3), Marie (page 2, panel 1), and the girl (page 2, pane 7). Marie's brother's hands are pretty spot on! But everyone else's could use a little work.

Your comic is kinda bad and lazy
>>
>>92982620
Protagonists are usually less interesting characters because it gives the reader someone simple to relate to. You can have an unconventional main character, but if they're already unique, the things that happen around them are going to be less interesting by comparison (unless they're REALLY different).

guys maybe we could talk about this in the next thread but i was wondering, in batman threads i have seen a few anons practice animation and some anons here also use animatin for their comics

Maybe we could turn this into a webcomic/cartoon thread

I post pages of my comic here once every thousand years during a full moon but i also animate stuff a few times. when it's related to my comic i post it here but i have a bunch of practice animations that i only get to post on bat threads sometimes or that i just do for fun and never post anywhere like pic, i bet other anons have some animations to show

/ic/ has an animation thread but sometimes it can be really slow
>>
>>92985674
Animations are usually welcome in these threads as well, animators pop up around here every couple of threads, and artists like Dupe are trying to put animated sections in their comics. The main issue is just that animation and comics are different ballparks with their own rules and sensibilities, grouping them together for critique threads seem like it would benefit neither party imo. I wouldn't go to animators for advice on paneling, and animators shouldn't go to comic artists for advice on in betweening, it seems silly to stick them together.

New thread, if anyone cares

I like comics and animation, I welcome both until there are enough animators on here to warrant their own thread. Although you have a point in that there are differences between each medium, I think paneling and animation are one of the things that are kind of similar. Paneling should be done with a sense of direction, like camera movement.
