My VCR just fucked up this old Adult Swim tape
>>
>>92886215
I know that feeling anon. I had a tape with the first season of Muppets Tonight including the original commercials and TGIF bumpers, but it got fucked beyond saving a few years ago.
>>
>>92886215
There are easy ways to fix this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUNMjeESM9g
>>
>>92886283
True, but now I have to get a new VCR
>>

>>
b-bump
>>
To think, people have saved episodes of shows, even commercials and bumpers too. but its not the same as watching TV shows switch to commercials and back again as it was originally.

Commercials like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lygyzLtwFrM

I suppose it would be possible to recreate a typical broadcast on, say, a 1995 day by editing together episodes of shows and commercials. Just like if you went back in time and turned on the TV.

I haven't had cable or satellite TV in a long time, I don't know what TV is like now. What are commercials like today? Are they like YouTube commercials?
>>
>>92891434
>What are commercials like today? Are they like YouTube commercials?
pretty much. they're incredibly irritating and obnoxious. they're desperate to get viewer's attention.
>>
>>92891704
Damn, that sucks.
>>
>>92886578
Are you sure it was the VCR's problem and not something with the tape? Damage and decay happen naturally over time. Also if you can affix the two broken sides together, it should still read, minus the loss of info around the tear.

>>92886283
>demonstrates how to fix somehting
>doesn't show it working again
Decent tutorial, but it would be nice to know the exact outcome.
>>
Like others have implied in the thread, the first thing you should do is wind back up the VHS tape into the box so that it doesn't get any more damaged.
>>
>>92892904
It was definitely the VCR as I tried another tape and the same thing happened. It's like it couldn't read the tape and then caught caught when I tried to eject it.
>>
So, what are some of the TV recordings you have, /co/?
>>
>>92894031
Whatever I have left over from timer-recording adult swim every night. So probably some 2006 or 2007 broadcast.
I think all of paranoia agent on one tape, I remember saving that one. I might be missing the last episode though. FLCL too.
>>
>>92894262
You got a myspleen account?
>>
>>92894262
I've never been into anime outside of, when I was in middle school what OG Toonami aired, and in high school, what ASA aired. But damn that was some good shit. The late 90s - mid 00s were gold for quality anime and exposure in the west, even older stuff like Lupin and Gundam found new lives among a whole new generation.
>>
>>92894661
Yeah, I thought about uploading a few of them. I ripped the FLCL tape, but the traking is kind of bad so I was thinking of redoing it. I can't tell if it's because the VCR is going bad, or if the tape is going bad. It's also 15GB for 3 hours so I obviously recorded at too high a quality.

>>92895315
Definitely. Being almost first through the door as an anime provider, Adult Swim could only afford to show the best they could, all without complaints of children seeing more mature ones.
>>
>>92891434
Some people do upload the entire thing, shows and commercials included. Most just cut the shows out for space reasons.
>>
>>92895616
Is it weeknight or weekend recordings mostly?
>>
>>92895902
Weeknight most likely, on weekends I would stay up late rather than set the timer.
>>
>>92895948
Nice. Then you have pretty much have broadcasts that haven't been uploaded yet.

There's one main guy who had nearly every sunday from December 2004 to late 2008 recorded, but other than that, not too much in the way of broadcasts from that era.
>>
>>92895616
>all without complaints of children seeing more mature ones.
Remember when Toonami edited Evangelion?
>>
>>92896904
I don't actually, around what year did they show that? It's not too gory or sexual, what did they edit?
>>
For those without a Myspleen account, here are some broadcasts I uploaded to Mega a little while back:

Also there's a Google Doc with a few more things:

I was in a thread like this some weeks ago, I have 4 tapes with a 2010 Nicktoons Invader Zim marathon on it but I'm too nervous to put them in my TV/VHS combo again since it keeps acting like it's going to fuck the tapes up. I put them in once just to see what was on them since just one tape was labeled. I'm not sure if there are any commercial breaks or if this was the entire marathon, I think I had someone else record it while I was away from home.

Looking through older tapes I also found some Toon Disney stuff with 101 Dalmations: The Series on it, pulled it out soon after it started playing so I don't know what else is on it.

My question is, how easy is it to transfer this stuff to my computer? How safe is it? Thanks, I'm new to this stuff since I've never had to do it before.

>can't find the 2010 marathon promo online
with how rabid the fans were i thought at least that would be archived somewhere, all i remember is the bumper having a CGI nicktoons/zim sign on the side of the screen at the end
>>
>>92908021
>how easy is it to transfer this stuff to my computer?
Pretty easy if you have the equipment. Something similar to this
>https://www.amazon.com/TOTMC-Capture-Adapter-Windows-Window/dp/B00M7T8T1E/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Z7EXHXKWX687Z2FTQDXP
would do it. Instead of plugging the VCR into the TV, you plug it into the USB dongle and your computer records what's playing.

>How safe is it?
Exactly as safe as playing a tape in a VCR

Just found more info on the marathon, it was 2011 instead and it was during a "24 hour marathon-athon" thing Nicktoons was doing for different shows, so I guess the Zim marathon was 24 hours like I was kinda thinking. Makes me wonder how much I managed on these 4 tapes.

Still can't find the Zim version of the promo.

Thanks, sounds good. I'll try to dump what I can one day.

I would un-ironically pay full price for cable if it meant I could order specific years of TV. I'd set it to run 1985-2005 and never bother with modern media ever again. The same channel programs with a TV guide and the old commercials too.

Honestly, I'd shell out $40 a month for this one service, easily. Fuck netflix or youtube.

Right? and also I'd think newer broadcasts could be worth preserving. Like special events, blocks, series premieres/series finales, etc. What's old to us was new to us at one point too. Eventually 2017 will be 10 years behind us. Maybe even random episode reruns. Who knows what will be preserved in the future, there's a fuck ton of shit lost to time and back then people never imagined that the thing they were watching would never be seen again.
>>
I have a bunch of tapes but past me kept being retarded and opening up the TV guide and leaving it there for like 30 minutes. I think one of them was disney, and then some movie network. At some point one of the tapes stops on a mickey mouse cartoon and my even more retarded friend records himself playing a PS1 sport game.

The few times I watch kiddie cartoons with my nieces and nephews I'm shocked by how little the commercials have changed since the 90s.

Even the toys they advertise are often the same ones.
>>
>>92886578
I hear online there are new VCRs that use HDMI
>>
>>92912546
Hmmmm.... I'll definitely have to look into that
>>
>>92908173
>so I guess the Zim marathon was 24 hours
They would have to have played some episodes twice then. There aren't enough Zim episodes to cover 24 hours.
>>
>>92913495
Yea I'm thinking I just recorded the first run and not the rest/repeats, I'm not sure though.
>>
>>92913792
Not counting the Christmas episode which I'm going to assume they skipped, there are 26 half hour episodes of Zim which is only enough to fill 13 out of 24 hours. That would mean there should be at least 11 hours and 22 episodes that were repeats.

And that's assuming they started at episode 1, went through every episode in order and started over when they got to the end. If they were just selecting episodes at random, then there could have been more repeats then that.

TESTING: Do you know what a time base corrector is? Are you using one when archiving your tapes? If you answered no to either of those questions then you need to start over from scratch.

Just buy one with a built in TBC like the one I posted. Saves you time & effort. See that green button on the right that says Digital TBC/NR? Supposedly since it filters the image it also removes the copywrite protection from tapes, so you could potentially use it to backup tapes that you normally couldn't.

Digital signal output.
Basically if you are using coax or RCAs you're guaranteed some loss in quality just due to the hardware involved.

Also flat screen tvs have shitty built-in speakers, so TONS of people are using surround, soundbars or some other addon speaker.
Some devices only have HDMI ports so its much easier to integrate a natively HDMI device into your home theater.

Thanks so much man!

Honestly, I'm glad there are so many likeminded people on here. I've always been interested in media and archival work and lived and breathed CN and AS back in the 2000s (as well as various other channels too) so this seemed like a no brainer.

I'd love to expand the project to include a lot of other not-specifically-/co/ tv broadcasts and/or rare and lost film preservation, but given the state of /tv/, it would never work.
>>
>>92941625
It's sad looking back. I had so, so, so many tapes of Digimon from back in the day. Pretty much every premiere of Tamers, and big chunks of seasons 1 and 2. That's something MySpleen doesn't have. Of course I got rid of them long ago, but I think back to the lost nostalgia.
>>
>>>/tv/83519623

we'll see how long this lasts
>>
I've said it before, but I'll say it again.

The biggest problem with getting these old tapes shared is that people always taped Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, but there's always the question of whether stuff got taped over for next week.

Plus, the further we get from that era, the less the chance of actually getting these earlier tapes digitized and shared with the world.
As time goes by, many of these tapes get misplaced or lost. And even then, A lot of the tapers in the prime teenage demographic from the start have moved on with their lives and the few with surviving tapes probably don't care enough to dig out, rip, and upload tapes now. Keep in mind, we're now more than 20 years out from the start of that golden era of Cartoon Network and over 15 from the start of Adult Swim. Many of these recordings are now forever lost to the fabric of time.

In many ways this effort is too little too late and a real uphill battle, but perhaps we can salvage some before the last of the available unshared content dries up.

Cartoon Network and to a lesser extent Nickelodeon was a HUGE part of my life though, i've seen about every single cartoon that has aired in the daytime on both stations aaaaall the way up until Flapjack/Chowder
>>
>>92942832
Of course. I'm glad we're finally really doing this project now, but it makes me sad knowing that there was a lot more we could have gotten if we had been more persistent a couple years earlier.

As it stands, the few remaining 2001 and 2002 AS recordings already trickled in (though no AS premiere or ASA premiere). Mostly from November 2001 - February 2002, 99% partial broadcasts or just one show recordings, and hardly anime ASA recordings. There are also a few partial 2003 and 2004 recordings, mostly Futurama/Family Guy and very few complete or near complete comedy originals and 0 ASA. And none of the new weeknight broadcasts.

The bulk of the material being recovered is from the 2005, as there have been 15 Sunday blocks recovered from that era. However there haven't been any weeknight or Saturday broadcasts from that era uncovered.

After that, a few 2006 and 2007 recordings, still only Sunday nights and not weeknights/Saturdays.

Then nearly nothing I can find from 2008/2009/2010/2011. After that only sporadic recordings of new episodes of shows.

Oh man, I grew up in Atlanta, so let me tell you...

I was pretty big into Cartoon Network around the CCF era and was big into all those shows. I remember being in New Mexico visiting family in 2001 and insisting not to go to dinner so that at 5 PM that I could watch CCF on the tv. I was a huge fan of Fridays and CN in general until about 2007-ish (even being a child extra on Fridays) when I was mostly into Adult Swim or other channels.

I first heard about Adult Swim around 2002 when it was growing in popularity from a friend I rode the bus with whose older sister introduced him to Harvey Birdman (his favorite, used to sing the theme song) and Aqua Teen (which I remember him describing to me as "fast food detectives who started solve crimes but end up dealing with supernatural monsters").

I also had older cousins whom I would see every summer and remember them watching Toonami in the afternoons and by 2003, they had been converted to AS (thanks to the popularity of FG and Futurama). They were into Sealab and Aqua Teen too, though hated Home Movies.

By the B&W era and I was a casually regular viewer, either watching it on weekends after the newly moved to Satudays Toonami or other programs or on on demand. One of my friend's dads (a cartoonist) would watch Tom Goes to the Mayor and Aqua Teen on VoD with us whenever I went to his house. He even had DVDs of Samurai Jack and Bebop that he introduced us too.

By 2005, I remember having a friend at school I used to talk about FMA and Inuyasha with a lot. And a few years later on I would sometimes wake up early on weekdays and watch Big O and Inuyasha and Home Movies reruns in the 5 AM slot.

>that follow up episode where Pepe fucked up and recorded Gundam over his parents wedding tape
10/10 maximum comfy would watch again
>>
>>92944759
I have a fond memory of one night watching AS with my dad when the season premiere of Birdman was on.

I remember The Boondocks and Stroker and Hoop too. And Squidbillies and Metalocolypse premiering. You used to see the DVDs coming out for AS shows in Walmart and stuff and I would also buy them or rent them at Blockbuster if I didn't have a lot of money.

I stopped watching quite as regularly around 2008-ish, but I remember liking Tim and Eric when it first came out and not finding Saul of the Molemen funny. I did like the Pee Wee's Playhouse and Saved by the Bell gags.

Oh and the Aqua Teen movie in 2007. Holy shit, there were billboards for that everywhere and it premiered at the historic theater a couple miles down the road (Ponce De Leon Avenue) that my street ran right off of. The bomb scare was all over the local papers and the news. I remember my mom asking me what the deal with the show was because she didn't understand why talking food doing stuff was funny. But yeah, that was a huge deal and the power change at CN was all over the business section of the papers too and I knew that CN would never be the same again (as evidenced by the degradation of Toonami, cancelation of Fridays, and proliferation of bad live action shows). I didn't actually watch the April Fools premiere prank because I forgot, but heard about it the next day.

Still, I think ASA had some new stuff I was really into at that time. Code Geass and Death Note. I remember Futurama leaving AS and them having a whole marathon for it.

In 2009, I remember the brit block thing with Darkplace and The Office and Look Around You and liking that better than most of the other live action other new originals at the time. Delocated was okay though. When King of the Hill came in 2010, I thought that was cool, but then stopped watching as much. Especially when they replaced the 5:30 Home Movies with a rerun with it (that was my pre-trek across town for classes morning routine).
>>
>>92945136
After that classes and work took up too much time so I pretty much stopped watching entirely save for the April Fools stunts which had become legend and the ocassional new show I stumbled across online. The Room was a fun in-joke among my friends and I.

It wasn't until Toonami came back that I started watching Saturdays again, or the 2014 Space Ghost/PHF April Fools that got me interested in watching the other shows again. Unfortunately, outside of Mike Tyson and Eric Andre Season 1, the new shows aren't that great to me. They're okay in the background noise.

Of course I also noticed that when I started watching again, AS on weeknights had taken over the 8 and 9 PM hours and was filled with over 75% FOX shows, mostly McFarlane (not even exaggerating) and the only originals airing was the same Robot Chicken x2/Metalocalypse/Aqua Teen/Squidbillies rerun combo that was the same lineup as when I stopped watching AS in early 2011. They didn't seem to air any originals before 2010 except these on any nights of the week, except for a few times when they did a little Home Movies for a month or two on Saturdays and Birdman and Moral Orel on Sundays late at night for about a month too. So by 2015 I was back to just watching the April Fools pranks again...

The end.

>One of my most prized possessions back then was a tape filled with nothing but Tom and Jerry shorts because I fucking loved Tom and Jerry back then (Still do) and I wanted to have copies of them all
>Eventually, I realized that I could save space on the tapes by stopping the recording when it came to a commercial since I never really cared about them nor had any idea what they would be worth in the future
>When shows started coming out on dvd in season sets, I slowly stopped taping stuff in favor of just buying those
>Still kept my old tapes in a box somewhere
>Ended up moving between states several times in the last few years, somewhere in that point, the tapes got lost
>Don't really care because everything that was on them, I either now have on dvd or can find online in better quality
>Even if I still had the Tom and Jerry tape, I'd probably never watch it again since I have the dvd sets now
Kinda sucks because there were some old things with commercials I had that the people on MySpleen probably would've appreciated but they seem to be gone for good now. Plus a couple tapes from the 80s that a relative gave me. Really wish I still had those. But on the other hand, I'm sure there's nothing else on 3/4 of the tapes worth preserving.

>tfw just very recently had the extreme luck of being able to pick up a VHS / DVD combo, in pretty good condition even and with a few tape recordings as well, for a little over 25.-€.
It was one of the best deals I've ever made and honestly, someone else would have gotten it if I did not, but I still feel kind of bad for the seller since VCRs in general here usually go for about 120,-€ and up. I'll be forever thankful to them.
The tapes, however, contain nothing of any worth and are only good for overwriting.
>>
>>92966469
Wait what was on the tapes though
>>
>>92966572
You could literally describe them as a video biography on the sellers TV habits, and not from the past, but very recent. Most of them were general TV program recordings from the last 2 or so years, constantly switching channels and stopping on reality-TV shows for a bit. I assume a lot of those have to be accidental recordings because the titling on the tapes that are labeled is never accurate.
I'm pretty much the last person you'd hear complaining about such contents, but the fact that it's so recent and basically the exact same program you'd get when turning on your TV today, that is pretty disappointing.

i never damaged any but they certainly disappeared after we moved
>>
>>92967948
My goodwill had a recent tape recorded of we bare bears, and at the start either a live action movie or a family recording, i think the wbb ep was the series premiere

that's it for me

ebay has recordings but most of the time it's nascar, wrestling, top gun airings, or shit like i love lucy, worth preserving in the general sense but nothing i'd pay money for

i also worry about them shipping a tape and it either getting fucked up or not what i wanted, so unless i find a "cartoon network 2003" tape i ain't risking it

Since this is an early-mid 2000s nostalgia thread, I have a question for folks born in 1995-1997(cusp of Millennials and Gen Z).

Do you associate your childhood more closely with the Millennial television/film experience like Blockbuster, Jimmy neutron, Yu gi oh, Drake and Josh, Gorillaz, Malcolm in the middle, Cyberchase, Osmosis Jones, The Weekenders, Megas XLR, Gundam wing, Recess, Invader Zim, Kim Possible, American dragon jake long, and having crushes on Avril lavigne, Britney spears, Jenny wakeman, and the Dark magician girl?

Or the Gen Z TV/film experience like streaming movies on Netflix, CN Real, Hannah Montana, Bakugan, The Dark knight, Twilight, Chowder, Gravity falls, Breaking bad, 30 rock, Marvelous misadventures of Flapjack, Adventure Time, and having crushes on Justin bieber, Harry styles, and "qt thick traps" - NOT girls, because Vice told you it was "hip" and "cool" to be homosexual?
