We know that not all gems have weapons in the traditional sense. Lapis's weapon is her water control. Why wouldn't Pearl have an ability like that, which would be useful for her to serve her master, but not for fighting?
Also, Bismuth is needed because gems can only have one weapon, and they might need a different weapon. For example, a gem whose weapon is a shield would need something to attack with, like a sword.
