What I get from it is that perhaps, ritual is formality in a sense. He has been ritually shut into his box, and even though he has the ability to leave it, the formality of it binds him regardless. He DOESN'T leave because he SHOULDN'T leave.

Someone brought it up before, Himself is likely a contradiction in that He's chaos with an identity. It would then not be too unusual that He also adheres to certain rules, and not to others.

After all, if He's an unbound devil and chaotic by nature, then how could He be a creature of formality? Formality requires rules.

It could be that He adheres only to a certain set of rules that someone established in the past, and that His ultimate goal is to change/ have someone change those rules so He can break free from his prison. Himself wants to be able to have an ability to think and act, but he probably also despises any rules imposed on him as they are the opposite of his nature. The first step in developing consciousness is recognizing the Other, the realization that there are things that are not "you". We learn to identify ourselves not by figuring out what we are, but by defining what we are not. In order for there to be an "I" there must also be a "You".

The Black Flame is pure chaos, it can be anything, do anything. But that means it has no constants to define itself by, it has no "you" to contrast itself against because everything is just a different reflection of one of its infinite possibilities. The only way to give it an identity is to create artificial limitations for it. Give it something it can't do so it knows what it CAN do. The identity of Himself and the rules he abides by are one in the same. That may be why he's so powerful, because he defines the rules of his own existence instead of having those rules forced upon him by a mask and name.

It also just occurred to me that this mirrors YISUN's divine suicide. YISUN's first and final act was to divide himself into two, or in other words to create identities by defining limits and boundaries. YIS was defined by being everything not of UN and UN was likewise defined by being everything YIS was not. Just like Himself all the gods were created from division and separation, by taking a piece of something that can be anything and everything and creating rules for it to follow.
