I really like the idea that Flourite's original gem was pretty strong but had like a wrong color or an extra arm or something and as she lived in the drop she encountered gems who were weak and unhappy with themselves because of it. She realized that fusing with them could make them somewhat happier, or at least able to forget about themselves and their troubles, and took it upon herself to do that for any gem who wants it.

Over time she's lost all traces of her own personality except the knowledge that without her people would be sad. Maybe that's enough for her, I know it'd be enough for me

I feel like it has to be worse though. While them not losing their self identities could be a good thing the fact that they have to talk slow still speaks volumes on the mental state. Not everyone in the fusion is agreeing on what to output. Something off is happening in there, otherwise they'd be totally in sync, like Garnet is, especially after being that way for eons. I dont know if its nonconseual or what, but youd think someone willingly going into that like Garnet and Stevonnie do thats held their form for eons would be more functional than what weve seen so far in the show. I still think she symbolises something like a family union, where the gems agree "democratically" on what will be said/done next. So they have individuality, but it leads to a slow reaction since everyone's opinion is respected.
The relationship Garnet embodies is a feverishly romantic one where the partners cannot stand to be without the other any second.
