About the first half of the first season feels that way before that season's story arc begins. Then it's a little more purposeful, sets up a ton of shit for the next season.

Next season follows through with those plot points from the beginning to the end. Not that there aren't some episodes that are pretty standalone, but in general there are more story/plot episodes and even those not directly relevant to the larger plot have greater focus on character development and the season's themes. 2 is overall a huge improvement on 1 and really feels like they know what they're trying to do; the S3 premiere seems like it'll be the same way.

So yeah, I think it's a good show, just the direction it goes isn't immediately apparent because it took them a bit to really get into it. But once it starts with the first major plot stuff, it never really stops going in that direction.

Yeah, the first half of season 1 is more lolrandumb, but around half-way it gets better. Season 2 is where it really kicks off and the show finds its footing and becomes more about the story and less about random misadventures (still shows up once in a while tho).

Don't know how to really say if the lore's good or not-- like if it comes off as stupid to you then of course it won't work-- but it is there and the universe gets developed a lot as it progresses.

Characters are good but don't start showing real development until late in the first season and then throughout the second. Star especially feels like she should have no depth, going by the first few episodes, but gets a some pretty thorough exploration in the later episodes.

Every generation has shit shows aimed at kids. It's that you're a kid when you watch them that they actually shine.

I grew up with GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, Real Ghostbusters. syndicated versions of other shows, and the Disney afternoon. The latter was pretty much the only one that wasn't overtly a toy commercial.

That said, I don't like Bob's burgers, regular show (is that still airing?), gumball, Star, Steven, or any Klasky toon. Seth MacFarlane is pretty cancerous too nowadays. Gravity Falls was secretly amazing as is the unofficial sequel (Rick and Morty).

The development of Ludo's character and his rise to power is some of the best stuff in the show. They took their goofy one-note comic relief villain and made him an interesting and layered character that's actually made himself into a legitimate threat.

I agree that it was obvious, I just think it was a bad decision and POTENTIALLY wasting what is arguably the best character on the show. The stupid little low level baby getting serious and becoming a real villainous superpower after being shat on constantly is an interesting dynamic, and at this point he's a more engaging villain than Toffee (so far). I guess we'll just have to see what direction they take it, but I would have preferred Ludo breaking off into a separate third party threat in this big fued between Moon and Toffee instead of being demoted to second fiddle. (Assuming he's not completely replaced by Toffee outright)

Maybe not even BAD (they certainly foreshadowed it enough; at no point does it feel like it comes out of nowhere), but sort of cheap: Ludo gets manipulated once again, by the same guy, only this time it also literally sort of removes Ludo temporarily from the picture as well.

It was the kind of thing I was hoping they wouldn't do from literally Ludo in the Wild. Possession is just kind of too gimmicky, and I thought maybe if the wand turned out not to be Toffee they could separate the Ludo plot from the Toffee stuff this time.

For some reason Star having puffy sleeves in S1 as part of her regular outfit was verboten because that was apparently too girly for Disney execs at the time (Nefcy and a character design ended up drawing like 100 dresses before they selected ones that were satisfactorily non-girly). Nefcy's revenge once Disney eased up on her after S1 was a puffy-sleeved dress getting added to Star's regular outfit rotation in S2.

The male friends thing is kind of self-explanatory. Another way to make the show seem less girly. Once again, after S1 was over and Nefcy had more control they were mostly dropped from the show.

What's critical to understand is that Ludo's development isn't going to suddenly halt. The series has two more seasons to go through, giving Season 3 plenty of time for Toffee and Ludo to split, and allowing Ludo to become a sort of redeemed character. The series just needed a means to get Toffee back, and decided to pull a deus ex using Glossaryk, who is literally God, making it tasteful.

I am pretty hopeful things will go to more interesting places re: both characters in the future. That particular plot twist didn't even really detract from the quality of the episodes/season, so much as I really wished at the time they'd done something different with it (I think in most other cases they're good at taking the plot in directions that aren't totally obvious at first).

It's jarring because the show goes through three animation studios in season 1. Mercury Filmworks which did the first few episodes was reassigned to Lion Guard. Things settle down once Rough Draft Korea got hold of the show. They're decent enough for me to stop caring but even to this day, I feel betrayed because it was the leaked OP that got me into the show and the studio that did it was Mercury.

Some retards insist on naming specific episodes "where the plot starts", but all that's gonna do is lead new watchers into skipping everything before that because hurr give me the plot durr what can I skip, and then they won't get a lot of stuff.

The reason the show feels so amazing is because one watched all the errors and the build-up and the shift from the lolsorandom harmless quirky fun to the serious shit hitting the fan while going down game of thrones meets harry potter meets madoka tier stuff. It won't feel as good plus you won't properly get what's going on if you skip a lot of stuff.

Plus if some faggot can't deal with the humor and only wants to see "serious" plot and wants to drop the show after 3 eps or whatever, let them. I do recommend watching till Mewberty or Blood Moon Ball before making up your mind - but the loud quirkyness is at the heart of the show even if it tones down later, and if that's repulsive to someone maybe Star vs. isn't the show for them. People are going like "it takes a while to get going" as if the serious shit is the true show and the loud fun only pointless filler in the beginning, but it's a core part of the show too

I was originally attracted to the show by the silliness aspect, but even I'll say there's been a marked improvement over time.

Despite their contribution to pacing and background details, the "filler" episodes are definitely hit-or-miss affairs when taken by themselves, and missed more often in the first half of S1 than anywhere else in the series.

I do think people who seriously want to watch it should watch the whole thing, and while it was okay enough when there was just Season 1 to skip stuff, by now almost all of the early episodes have been made relevant in some way in the next season. The episodes you say to watch until are also pretty much what I'd suggest too.

But at the same time I do think someone watching won't have an accurate picture of the show if they base their opinion only off Brittney's Party or something. Not that one or the other aspect of it is '"the real show," but if you haven't seen its attempts to be serious than you don't really have a complete view of what it is, and that's probably what people mean when they try to convince others who are considering stopping because an early episode doesn't appeal to them-- it does get different, the show's not at its best then.

But I do feel this way about the shift toward serious stuff in the latter half of 1 (not so much 2 because if you've seen 1 you already expect it + it has a better balance of humor/drama than 1 anyway). Toffee especially only really works so well, from my perspective anyway, from being in total contrast to almost everything about the show and characters before that point; it's a fun shift that doesn't have quite the same effect if you only watch those episodes that season.

I really do agree with you on the whole.

But just going by what I've seen on /co/ there are some people who just wrote the whole show off entirely based on seeing one episode, maybe on TV or just checking it out at random, and assuming it never changes based off that (and often came back to it later and realized it improves). And while it's true if you hate the humor you probably won't like the show even as it gets more serious, it's also true that some of those early episodes aren't even the show's humor at its best either.

I do think it's better to try to watch it in order if you really want to see it, but I just don't see the harm in suggesting later ones to get someone into it. At least for the first season; I think the second season's quality is mostly consistent enough that if someone doesn't like a few episodes from there, they probably never will.
