Rhodonite could be considered a problem fusion for similar reasons:

I think for pearl fusions there's something of an impossibility for them to sync perfectly because the pearl gains much more esteem and runs a higher chance of desperately always wanting to be part of a fusion compared to their partner. Seeing Pearl's sentiments about Sardonyx it seems to me that pearls are thirsty as hell to feel as validated as they do in a fusion.

The reason she doesn't stay an Opal forever is because Amethyst is impossible to reconcile with long enough to let them lose each other inside the fusion. Amethyst is fucking gross and despite the fusion Pearl can't mesh with her personality at all.

I think the thing about fusion body parts is that they're more to express something to the audience than an in-universe reason. Before now, double eyes have almost always been used to express that one gem was hiding something from the other gem in the fusion (visually, they could have the two sets of eyes making different expressions to show this). Extra arms are usually used to express that a fusion is strong. Fucked up colors express that a fusion is out of sync. ect

Fusions between 2 and even 3 gems are easily sustainable. Malachite is an outlier, being formed from the perfect Quartz and an overpowered gem like Lapis.

To me, just like Fluorite is like an old lady, Peridot is like a child. Or at least, she started to be during the whole redemption thing.
