>Fear of the unknown. Hatred of things they can't control or understand.
Good evening /co/. On the 100th birthday of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, it's only fitting to share a story of one of the industry's late great storytellers.
A story that bridges the gap between Golden and Silver Ages of the DC universe, and was later set to occur on Earth-21 of the Multiverse. Take a seat at Jimmy's 24-7, and let me tell you a story...
This is, Darwyn Cooke's "The New Frontier".
>>92807294
Aw yes.
>>92807294
I always love reading storytimes of this
Was originally intending to do OMACmorial day, but Designated Dave beat me to the punch.
>>92807360
Sorry, but decided midway to extend that into a DC Kirby-A-Thon!
And you saying you were going to storytime this just made me add Challengers of the Unknown to that docket.
darwyn ;-;7
It's already been a year since we lost him.
I love New Frontier. Have a bump, OP.
>>92807411
I was actually intending to do OMAC and some Infinite Crisis related material, but this worked out better.
This is gonna fill a couple threads worth, so no worries about posting reaction images.
Gonna be including his issue of Solo, and two more issues related to this book as epilogue.
>>92807465
I'm glad.
I'm just trying to build up some momentum before I storytime the full Fourth World Saga later this week.
Almost everything is in digital now, so it'll be the cleanest looking storytime of it.
>>92807519
I actually have Mister Miracle saved for sometime in the future if you like.
>Darwyn Cooke
>Dead
I... wait, WHAT? HOW WAS I NOT AWARE OF THIS? OH GOD...
>>92807511
Last time I did it, it was just 2 threads. Are you doing the Trinity story, Titans and WW?
>>92807511
Are you doing Tomasi's Superman tribute issues?
>>92807571
Thanks, but I have all of the files ready.
Sorry if I'm stepping on your toes with it that as well.
>>92807593
All three are included in the Deluxe edition, alongside loads of bonus material from the Absolute Edition.
>>92807601
Stay tuned.
I recall reading New Frontier for the first time in late July of 2015. My LCS was having a sale, and I went in blind. It was my first exposure to Cooke's work.

Have a nice breakdown of Cooke's Three Panel Grids by Hass.
I don't recall getting into J'onn J'onzz until I read New Frontier.
>>92809417
Bump
What kinda irks me about New Frontier is that the JSA and the other mystical beings were okay with there being a chance everyone dies as long as earth produces new heroes.
There's so many unforgetable images, lines, and moments in this book.
I'm glad I reread it in the last week.
>>92809635
In the words of The Phantom Stranger, "Let us have a little faith".
>>92809758
No I mean I get that Spectre, Fate and Phantom Stranger could not help since its inconsequential what happens to earth since they have a higher calling but Billy and Zatanna were pretty calm about the whole situation. I get the need that the torch needs to be pass but what bothers me is that they already decided 0 intervention no matter what.
>>92809930Just imagine Billy got bribed out of participating via the ice cream.
>>92809999
>9999
nice
I love everything about this thread.
>>92810150
It's neat rereading it. On my last read, I recognized Doom Patrol cameos in chapters 15 and 16.
>>92810673
Honestly hadn't given the Challengers a second thought until this series.
But this sequence and this scene made it necessary to delve into.
Such a damn good line.
Enter: My favorite character of the book on the first read.
Over time I've shifted to J'onn, but Faraday remains a steady second.
gonna be my next buy, for sure
What did you expect?
Nevertheless, this hit me hard first time reading.
And this marks the end of part one. Continuing with the book here.
>>92813023
Reading bump
>>92809159
huh. Injustice Diana lurks within.
>>92817947
And so does The Dark Night Returns Supes.
I fucking hate Wonder Woman in this.
>>92808259
Title drop!
>>92810292
I didn't know the Flash could turn invisible.
>>92807465
lucky for me I was looking at omnibus's and Infinite Crisis and this were two main ones I was considering
>>92810628
why can't they be this cute in the main DCU
>>92808203
Whats up with Hitler and the spear of longinus?
>>92822482
It's the explanation for why the JSA didn't fight in Europe during WWII
Nazi occultism was a thing so they just picked the spear for a plot device
>>92808678
>they keep calling him airman
I know its technically correct but I'm used to it being used to refer to E1's thru 4
>>92811357
>>92811390
>>92811417
Man, classic Suicide Squad sounds cool.
>>92822548
What is the explanation? I mean I guess it makes sense that the spear of destiny might stop Fate and Spectre but what about Alan, Jay, Wildcat, etc?
>>92824510
Some of the older stories have the Spear of Destiny bestow mind controlling powers to its wielder. It was a way to write out the JSA from flying straight to Berlin and rounding up the German High Command
>>92809832
Cei-U
>>92824510
supposedly the Spear of Destiny can mind control any being with Super Powers that gets within it's radius of control, which just happens to be large enough to cover almost the entirety of the Old World besides Great Britain
JSA: The Golden Age had a similar effect be caused by a Nazi metahuman by the name of Parsifal
>>92809783
ASHI!?
RIP Cooke
>tfw you will never own an original page from New Frontier
>>92808166
Thats a hell of an opener i tell ya what
>>92812761
Edward R Murrow was an American hero. This report is based on the Senator Mcarthys (Faraday) communist witch hunt.
>>92808203
Having just read his Minutemen book, I understand from seeing this book why DC chose him for that particular Before Watchmen mini.
bomp
>>92813044
Final part over here >>92816783
>>92812669
Was not expecting that.
>>92820431
Funny, I was thinking how good she was.
Going to bump this. Can't believe people let the other two parts archive. Sadness.
God I love the premise of this book so fucking much. The art as well. A shame the story was so poorly done. I wish Cooke had pulled a Ross and gotten a writer to work with him.
>>92840925
>A shame the story was so poorly done
U fucking wot m8?
>>92840925
I think some of the plots are good, I love anytime the focus is on Martian Manhunter. I just hate the Green Lantern stuff and the cheesy racism subplot
>>92842342
What's wrong with the GL stuff? it's my favorite subplot
>>92842389
All the " No I'm a pacifist" shit.
>>92842773
well that was kinda silly but I don't think it ruined that plot at all
>>92807294
Thank you Op. New Frontier is easy in my TOP 3. I love the designs, I love the story and the idea of show the pass from JSA to JLA and I love the bright spirit that Cooke trasmited.
That of all the drafters just Cooke has died so young is unfair.
>>92809074
Diana was 100% right
Supes is just a gov bitch
>>92838191
She's a bloodthirsty warhawk working as the US jackboot and then she's sulking about not being needed anymore. Don't forget her lusting for "Kal" dick.
>>92845491
She's a gov bitch just as him.
>>92811490
Hooded Justice what are you doing here and why are you a brotha and not a kraut anymore ?
