He just randomly becomes the savior of the world. In the Lugia movie he is literally in a prophecy. In the Lucario movie he figures out he has potent aura powers. He learned how to fucking fly through the water in the Manaphy movie, but that might've just been tied to Manaphy, even though I think he was shown still using the power during the credits?

I actually miss the days of early season 1. Back when pokemon were pets and not just people who agree to travel with you. Battles were more serious, losing sucked and it was urgent to get your pokemon treated or it would just die. Pokemon would outright try and eat each other. Trainers would see a pokemon and try and catch it rather than figure out it's moral crisis and sending it on it's way. Gym leaders could be assholes for no real reason.

Seriously if you look at the series Kanto has the most asshole gym leaders in canon. After Kanto every gym leader is super supportive and helpful. Brock didn't kill Pikiachu out of mercy and prior to that he outright ditched his family, Surge kept a pokemon center in business and mocked every trainer that came in, Erika wouldn't battle people for not liking perfume, Koga had a deadly booby trapped mansion, Sabrina turned people into dolls, Blaine refused to battle trainers because fuck tourists and the ones he did he challenged over a volcano and outright tried to kill Ash's pokemon, and Giovanni is the leader of team rocket.
