The truth is hidden in plain sight in this comic. The brilliant imagery and storytelling truly outshines the greatest of the greats.
Notice how the only person who ages is Mike.
Why is this? Why wouldn't anyone else age?
Well, think of who it is. Mike. The same Mike who has been leeching his life force off of a fictional relationship with someone with whom his only contact is over the phone.
The same Mike, whose relationship with other cast members can change dramatically, usually in tune with his current mood, even retroactively.

It should be clear to any true observer of the illustrious BCB canon, that this short strip, is where the truth of the series is laid bare.
Mike, torn from his phone regresses into a wild animal, driven by nothing but the need to "get home". To "Lucy".
None of his friends age, as none of them exist. Not really. They're all figments of an emotionally and socially stunted Mike's imagination. Puppets he plays around with in his head as he sits around alone at lunch period, so as to pretend like he has relationships.
Why else would he shun each and every one of them in favour of someone who not only is half-way across the world, but barely even interacts with him digitally? Because she's the only real thing he has.

In this comic, as he loses his phone in the sinking, he loses that one connection, and becomes even more desperate to return to his psychotic dream of fake friends.
Much like how Lucy, the figment that allowed him to experience romantic feelings (which he based off of Muh Animus on TV) was shunned when he finally started to feel like Sandy could work out, thinking the Lucy figment would distract and ruin this one chance, and how she then returned when Mike's conviction that Sandy is perfect was shaken as she refused to play with him in his favourite, childish anime ways.
