Nefcy's art is what made me swallow my reservations and watch the show. So much of it has surreal or dark or horror elements, and I always felt I could see that influence seeping through the cracks in the series every now and then. Fast-forward two years, and here we are. No idea how far she'll take things, or how far she'll be allowed to, though.

Yeah, even when the show legitimately didn't have much substance because it was still in that really safe episodic stage (like, the pre-Mewberty episodes), the darker and more violent/meanspirited jokes were its standout feature for me. It IS a cute show but without that edge it would've felt more shallow/generic.

The actual huge plot events have more of that element and even though they probably won't/can't get as dark as they could if taken to an extreme, there's enough there to work. It's hard to imagine the Moon stuff turning out in context to not be as dark as it seems, even though they're not going to go full STAR IS THE ANTICHRIST with it either.

I never expected it to happen though, and still don't fully. I've left it vague enough to where it can still happen while not happening at the same time. All in all I was bored and had some fun after seeing that Dies Irae commercial all those months ago. No regrets, it's been a wild ride so far.

Going back I noticed they put a lot more effort into animating season 1. Everything just seemed so much more fluid than in season 2.

Alright /co/, I've got a mystery for you...

What's our most polarizing maybe-mermaid's next move?

I've done weaponized autism levels of analysis on this show and this is the one thing where I really don't know what comes next. Keep in mind the following.

- Jackie is chill and loyal to Marco, and Star is her friend as well.
- On the other hand... pic related. When Star dropped her dramabomb, that was Jackie's face. She looked like she was already planning where to hide the body.
- We've never seen Jackie pushed into a corner before. We have no precedent for how she'll react.
- Her summer seems to be open, and she wants to spend it with Marco.
- And yet... does she want to spend it getting back a girl who just confessed to wanting to swallow her boyfriend's beef and sour cream taquito? Even the confession could be seen as a betrayal.
- I don't think the season 3 opener being sans Jackie is nearly as important as a lot of people think. It could be unfinished, it could be censored to avoid spoilers. Who the hell knows? Trailers always lie.

It's probable that Marco is going after Star within days, if not minutes. Given that, a few possible scenarios that I've thought about...

- Jackie feels betrayed, and sees Marco's unrelenting dedication to Star as he prepares to follow her into hell. She realizes that even though she's smooch buddies with him, Star still holds first place in his heart. She breaks up with him before he leaves, and Marco goes on to Mewni, perhaps completely alone. (This is my bet, for what it's worth, but I'm far from certain.)
- Jackie wants answers as well, and wants to to spend the summer with Marco. They form a strike force to get Star back with Pony Head and crew. (Possible, but I think less likely.)
- Jackie, seeing how in love they are, gives them her blessing and agrees to remain friends with both of them. (Not like this, Daron “Y7 Torture Porn” Nefcy, Not like this. Let the tears of infinite suffering FLOW.)

She can either

Right before Eclipsa's chapter we have the snake hands, and Moon's diamonds seen in the upper left of pic, while the next page is the bottom left showing a giant Star with monster and possibly darker symbols all over it. We know this is the next page due to official parts shown in the upper and bottom right of my pic. The reason I make a big deal of that Star in OP's image is Star's wand is the only wand in the butterfly family with a literal Star on it, and this page from the book has a giant Star.
