It's been more than two years since I checked this out of the library, but I still have some very vivid memories. At one point, she explains how the "women in fridge" trope is offensive, then says "it's easy to see when you put your critical thinking cap on. (Mine has feathers!)" And for some reason that one line, while not making me outright laugh, gave me a huge fucking grin that wouldn't dissipate. The author has a good sense of humor, even though the book is full of SJW propaganda. Speaking of which, she repeated the lie about how sexualization of women is different from sexualization of men because men actually enjoy seeing scantily clad, buff dudes, which was obvious bullshit to me, but for some reason they consider believable. I also liked the inclusion of "Human Beings" in the list of fandoms, but "Evageeks" made me wince.

I never got the hub bub surrounding using a woman as a plot device to kick your hero or heroine in the gut. Admittedly it is shit, if there's no attempt at characterization, but it's not offensive either imo. The real complaint against fridging as it's called is because it sacrifices potentially more influential female characters as fodder for main character angst without any real growth, likening the "women" to only have value when lost.

I mean, it's bad writing, but it has its places too to create stakes. As long as their death in some way advances the plot then I think it's fine.

The fact is, it's hardly about "using a woman" as the plot device: it's a close relation or companion of a main character who's being used, and shitty or simplistic writing usually limits this to a wife or girlfriend, since buildup or exposition for it isn't really needed.

You can phrase the description of pretty much any story element to make it offensive; it's just a matter of how willing you are to warp reality to make it about you
