Once I tried to think of something darker than rape and what I came up with is not-rape*.

I had an idea for a story where basically Jimmy Olson invented the persona known as Lex Luthor.
He as Jimmy starts an intimate relationship with Kara's alter ego (unknowingly at first) by acting the same way Lois acts around Clark.
They have lots of consensual sex.
He fakes his villain persona's death to drive her spirits higher.
He enjoys this satirical relationship based on both of them not opening up about each other.
She eventually reveals that she is Supergirl and Jimmy reveals he is for all intents and purposes Lex Luthor.
No plastic surgery, body swapping, reality altering, or just generally any form of mind control.
Supergirl loses her mind.
It is clear Jimmy knows Clark is Superman.
Clark confronts Jimmy only to realize he can't convict him of anything or even bring himself to exacting any kind of vengeance.

I have this theory that once rape became a thing comic writers could regularly use, it became the new murder.

Which is to say, if you wanted to introduce a badass new villain or bump up an old one to a new threat level, back in the old days you'd just have them kill someone prolific, a big name hero, or a sidekick or a love interest or something.

Then, audiences got desensitized to murder in comics, so writers switched to rape. The difference between murder and rape from a narrative standpoint is that with rape, the victim goes through things after the act.

Most writers don't care about showing the recovery or development of the victim after the fact, since they were just using the rape as a plot device, so often that huge chunk of what should be the impact of the act is rarely explored, which means the whole thing regularly comes off as cheap and edgy.

There's nothing really wrong with Neonomicon, other than it completely misses HPL's tone. Still, Alan is aware of it and states it in the very book through the characters when they say HPL was deliberately subtle about the details of his fiction and their sexual implications because of his culturally prudish upbringing.
It works well as a modern-times take on HPL's horror.
Providence, however, is a much better piece of writing overall (amazing, if you ask me) and respects the tone of HPL's fiction much more. Moore really did research E V E R Y T H I N G. If you feel "wronged" by Neonomicon, Providence will really make it up to you.
