No shit, Gunn adapts characters that already exist in the comics and changes them significantly for the movies.

I mean Taserface is a weird as fuck and not that great of a name but fuck it made sense like Matter Eater Lad does for that respective character. Without it it's just a head scratcher and I guess that's what Gunn wanted to go for but he stretched it a bit too long and it wasn't that funny.

It's like having Stilt-Man but without stilts, the character is already funny and ridiculous but take away the stilts and he's just dumb.

its a COLD gun, it works off the principals of heat itself, which is to say the movement of atoms, and makes the innate particles move slower instead of creating a layer old cold material over something.

It literally saps kinetic movement from whatever it touches, its a COLD gun, not a FREEZE gun. So yes, it could in fact freeze light solid if it stopped the particles of light from moving. And the only reason i can think it DOES that is because of the concentration of light.

An object thats hotter will have its heat flow into an object thats colder. The lasers, likely being at nearly absolute zero, caused the heat to be sapped from the machines so suddenly the internal mechanisms locked up and broke as the heat energy went into the frozen lasers.
