How do you become funny?

As in what is the art of comedy and writing dialogue and jokes that are actually funny with a clear understanding of comedic timing given specific circumstances?

Yes I understand comedy is 'subjective'. But there is a difference between a quality joke and bland 'for the lolz' surface level humor.

Storyboard to first draft!

>>92727515
This looks great! Color, characters, backgrounds. The punchline made me smile, but it's your characters that really sell it for me. They're very entertaining.
Is there a reason why you went with the 4-panel format?

Not quite a webcomic, but,
>Hire artist to do art for the project
>They offer a timetable that is pretty agreeable, decent weekly progress
>Three weeks pass
>They don't even have basic drafts of anything
>Ask them wtf is going on
>Oh sorry my other contract has kept me super busy, I just haven't had the time.
>They have spent about fifty hours in the last two weeks playing video games on steam
>Their social media shows them spending most of several days just hanging out with people.

Fired. This is how artists get fired.
>>
>>92726928
Best of luck. Remember; "finished, not perfect."
>>92727500
If you can differentiate between what you find funny, and what is "for the lolz" surface humor, I think you might be able to answer your own question. Why not try creating a few strips that you may find funny? Make jokes that will make YOU laugh, and people may share the same humor you do.
>>92727515
Good to see you're still at it. And I'm seeing a ton of improvement from just a few months back when you posted a few pages. Great job!
>>92730051
Interesting layout. I'm really digging the "ye olde cristian imagery". Can't wait to see the final draft.
>>92732007
It sounds like you don't have a real interest in it to begin with. It may be an easy way to popularity, but you may get bored rather quickly, and want to move onto better things down the road. I'd say really work on creating something you'll really enjoy, with a bit of pandering.
>>92732311
Sorry to hear that anon. Hope you find an artist with a better work ethic down the road.
>>
This will be the first day in 2 weeks I haven't made at least one page. Instead I'm going to go through and edit pages and add dialogue (and fix dialogue at last thread's suggestion). Such momentum-loss days are often how I lose projects, so I declare to this thread, I will have another page tomorrow.

Keep going, you can do it.

>Is there a reason why you went with the 4-panel format?

Looking back, it's probably stupid, but I thought a 4 panel comic would be less work, given that this is my first comic and I'd like to keep it simple. I grew up with 4 panel comics like Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts, which always had a punchline but usually a plot over several weeks, so I wanted to create something that's episodic and non-episodic at the same time.

However, even my co-artist mentioned that a regular comic would be better, so I'm not sure anymore. I like having punchlines at the end of every page, so you can enjoy them even if you don't like the story. However, I don't think a punchline always has to be a joke, so there will be some darker moments here and there.

The story I came up with is actually pretty weird and I assume it'll get quite confusing for my readers later on, so I can only hope it'll all work out if I keep that format. Whenever I need more panels, we usually just keep the square file size and play around with the layout, like we did in the posted page.

What do you think? Should I keep the "4 panels and a punchline" format or is it bad for a story-driven comic?

Anyone have interesting ideas for organic looking clothes or wearable tech that won't come off as primitive?

In the universe I'm working with there's a large faction that spans half the known universe that refuses to utilize anything they view as synthetic or mechanical and have managed to rival nearly every benefit of technology through biological alternatives. So they're actually pretty advanced, just not in the way we usually think of. I'm having trouble staying creative with their fashion statements and wearable technologies though, it needs to be obvious that they were made from living things.

About 20 for the first chapter - although my script had me at 12. I really just wanted to bump the thread with some content.
Why do you digitally ink? I think I might have to do that, just because my regular hand-inking isn't so great.
I see you post pretty regularly, but I haven't been keeping up. As usual, it's another impressive page! Other than your characters, I really like the bit of background in the first panel, as well as some of the small touches like the cartoon-y stars.

>>92734243
Were you the poster from before who was worried about the cringe content of his comic? I think they posted with an attached image of that blue-haired girl from Madoka.
I think I understand the angle you're coming from, 4-koma slice of life comedy about an awkward girl trying to get a boyfriend. I like how Aki is just a regular dude, he's not even mean about it even though Reiko seems like a pain to deal with.
Sometimes it doesn't follow the 4-koma format though, like in comic (2), attached is what I propose. The writing is a little vulgar, but I can see the humor there. As for art, I would try for something simpler, also attached (right) is just a really simple style.
As it stands, I see your first chapter more as a storyboard, other than an official comic.

>>92734406
I can't wait for your content to come out, you're also doing a review series right? It all just looks so promising. The silhouette is great, I think the whiskers above his lip really help with the image. Have you ever seen Starship Troopers? That's what it vaguely reminded me of.

All three of those guys are. Gill sparingly uses ancient salvaged machinery parts along side organic technologies such as that chute system manipulating her weird slime arm, but she's an odd case. She's wearing a grubworm vest, boots made from some kind of fungus and the rest of her clothing is probably made from some kind of animal hide.

>>92737181
Totally had starship troopers in mind actually! But yeah I'm launching the review series within the next month or so and then launching the "vegabond" comic after I garner some kind of audience from the videos. No idea when that will be but I have loads of resources I need to make for the comic anyway so I'm not in any kind of rush. Script has been done for a while though.

I think the 4-panel comic works, but since it's a parody of a shounen type story I thought a 'regular' format might suit it better. I think the page you attached really works around that condition though, and it's really cool! All of these dark silhouettes look really cool, I can't wait to see them all.
I wouldn't mind seeing a 'regular' paneled comic from you guys that's more story-driven. Maybe if it works out, the current one can be a more light-hearted comic, and then you can have a more 'serious' story-driven comic too.

>>92734576
>>92734583
Looks like a western! Top guy is pretty intimidating, not only could he use my bones as toothpicks, he's also naked - tactical genius.
Rosa is looking pretty neat too. With your art style, I'm really interested in seeing how your comic, or whatever it is you're making, turns out.

>>92736484
Army pants do seem like a good way to incorporate something organic into a function setting.
Attached:
Artificial photosynthesis (top left), metal-organic framework (MOF), organic light emitting diode (OLED), are some thing that came to mind, and as far as I'm concerned are made with organic materials. Left-center are some compiled images from the Trove A/W 2011 line, and right is like /fa/'s 'lunarcore'

Are there good webcomics out there with non sexual furry characters? A lot of the katbox comic have anthropomorphic furry characters with huge boobs, and a lot of them feature sex scenes or nude fanservice. So I was wondering if there was stuff out there thats a bit more tame. I want to write and draw stories that feature animal characters and humans. But maybe more along the lines of old school cartoons.

From my webcomic bookmarks -
>Lackadaisy
>Cucumber Quest
>The Green Knight
>Jail Bird
>The Devil's Henchmen
>Poppy o'Possum
>Beatriz Overseer
feature anthro animals without the kind of capital-f Furry fanservice you'd find on Katbox, although some of them touch on more mature themes in varying degrees.
Cucumber and Jailbird are possibly the more cartoony ones.

You might also want to take a look at comics like Usagi Yojimbo.

Nah. That was Nanael from Queens Blade. One of my personal favorite characters of all time.

>4-koma slice of life comedy
Actually, this was going to turn into something Higurashi no Naku or Mirai Nikki-like in the next few chapters. But i guess you could say thats slice of life too in a way.

>an awkward girl trying to get a boyfriend
heh. Sort of an understatement.

>Aki is just a regular dude
I thought he was an asshole. I really wish i could write male characters like their from King of the Hill. Ive never been impressed by a male character in anime yet except for like the big ones like Leouche and what not.

>Sometimes it doesn't follow the 4-koma format though, like in comic (2), attached is what I propose.
wow. you really improved it!

>As for art, I would try for something simpler, also attached (right) is just a really simple style.
But the right style looks so shitty compared to the left! I can never purposely downgrade my art. Iwant art just like kisaragi gunma and okamoto lynn one day.

>The writing is a little vulgar, but I can see the humor there.

Ah sorry! They look kind of similar when the image isn't expanded.
I wouldn't call it downgrading, but it's getting you used to drawing with weight, and over time you can refine it the way you would like to. There are some challenging poses, angles, and perspectives in your comic, and it might easier to understand them if you had easier models to work off of.

For a horror/mystery, obviously check out some works by Junji Ito, Fuan no Tane does a pretty good job at building suspense, Uno Moralez does a good job at building an atmosphere, tama (attached) does some interesting spook-stuff, and definitely some of clonemanga's earlier works.

If you want to continue along those lines, I would definitely focus on building a mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere! It would definitely mean slowing the pace of your comic.

it's easier to learn to draw yourself than to find an artist who isn't a complete flake, even if you pay them. and learning to draw well is hard as fuck so that's pretty bad.

your best bet is to actually get an artist who's actually invested and interested in your project, but that's still no guarantee.

I really like your crosshatching technique, very neat and tidy. You draw lose clothing very well and you did great showing how gravity and motion affect clothing. Great job with the lighting it panel 5.

In the fourth panel though, how comes you added motion lines to the kids run forward as it they got up in the blink of an eye. They look like ninjas moving at the speed of sound (sonic), might have been more appropriate to just show them moving forward with out the extra motion lines.

Great comic though!

Is it better to make up character names when using fantasy setting, or is it okay to use real names? I know there aren't any really correct answers to this, but I want to know what others' opinions are on the subject.
>>
>>92750853
Imo it depends on your fantasy setting. If it's high fantasy, I feel it's better to use names that match the setting as it makes the reader feels more immersed into the world.
>>
>>92750853
I think either/or is fine as long as everything sounds natural in the context of that particular culture. Having two brothers named "Stan" and "Xuchilbara" probably isn't a good idea.

New page of West Tree!
>>
>>92750853
depends on how weird and fantastical it is

If it's basically just medieval england or whatever you're free to go with your Geoffreys and Douglases. If it's a super wacky anime dimension then just make some sounds.
If you want to be extremely cheesey you can call (important, magical) people a selection of 4 nouns based on their theme, like if they're a big dwarf black smith you can call them "firebrand blackhammer" or if they're an elf you can call them "glittermoon duskwolf" or something.

Just avoid "modern" names. Like steve. Nobody is going to take Sir Steve seriously.
>>
>>92750951
What do you think about modified names? Like different spellings or possibly putting two names together?

>>92751005
I agree with that. I plan on keeping characters from the same areas and/or culture with similar naming conventions (or names picked from the same culture/language).

>>92751238
Definitely cheesy, but I'll keep it in mind since it might work for some stuff. And yeah, I'm going to try to stay away from overly common/modern names.

Also, is it too weird to just pick names from other cultures without having the setting necessarily reflect those cultures? Like using Celtic names for some sort of vaguely western European setting, but the culture itself probably won't mirror medieval England/Ireland exactly.
>>
>>92739497

fortunately you can save a lot of time and be a shameless ripoff artist with nobody saying boo, if you just pattern your fictional civilization on a real one.. or even better, two that are unusual to mix.
I like to let the characters inform that for me. Sort of like how dr zoidberg started out as a joke on a crustacean being jewish, so when we saw the rest of his people they were all alter kockers who nag and pester and prod you to be your best but are never satisfied.
then they threw in some Pon Farr shit just for fun

On a desktop, they look goofy indeed.
>>92745549
Yeah i appreciate the feedback for sure.
If i were to do a longer comic, i'd probably just go with regular pages, keeping panels large enough to be decent on mobile tho, but i'd like to have some data on how many read (web)comics on phones vs desktop or tablet, that'd be pretty useful.
>>92746407
As far as comics goes, i'm just starting out, and this was meant to be sort of a technical test (art style changes slightly in it, for example, just because i was testing various brushes, format, pipeline workflow, etc).
I opened a Tumblr where i posted a couple of illustrations a couple of months back, but then i decided to focus on comics, so i didn't pay it much attention (and i didn't really have a following, so i didn't care, for now).
I'll go back to it when i have the comics up and running, i'll probably post sketches and similar stuff, on it.
Illustrations, when i have time.

well I just meant the framing, that's all. It's funny, it reminds me of film. the entire reason widescreen happened is because you could record twice as many frames onto the same amount of film, then just blow them up on the projector. it was a money-saving stunt. it never should have happened.. but technically with a strip of film, you can have a series of ANY size frames, as long as they're rectangular, and they won't actually be 'bigger' or 'smaller' since that's up to the projector, and film is analog.

Calvin and Hobbes usually had actual page layouts for the sunday strips. I think the 4 panel comic works with your comic since it's a gag-type, but I agree with your co-artist. If you're going to want to do a story driven comic, a normal layout would benefit you for the pacing. I'd say experiment with a few "normal" pages if you can. You can still keep your gags at the end if you wish. It wouldn't hurt.

In my works I have something similar where once in a while through absurd random chance "Glitches" happen in their reality that lead to an inter-dimensional space reminiscent of 90s views on "virtual reality" and "Cyberspace". To make it especially obvious that the constructs from this area are foreign and wrong I'm going to make their outlines brighter than the coloring inside instead of darker (kinda like a 3D version of pic related) just so it contrasts with literally everything else in the comic. In order to show that something is out of place or "wrong" on a2 very fundamental level you may want to try making something as integral and consistent as it's very lineart different from literally everything else around it for emphasis.

>>92757139
Nice! For whatever reason I had never considered the use of scales and horns in clothing like they appear to use pretty often in monster hunter. Cool stuff.

I guess it being on phone, i get a bit obsessed by details getting lost and looking too small.
Regular pages are easier to storyboard, lol.
Also, working vertically fucks with my brain, we have eyes positioned horizontally after all, and our horizontal FoV is much wider than our vertical one, but i have to remember it's meant to be scrolled through.

The format allows some interesting "tracking" shots, because you scroll through them, and you can have them evolve organically, but at the same time, when that's basically your only option, it starts to feel like a gimmick, after a while.

No wonder a lot of "mobile friendly" comics are just panels slapped into a lot of empty space, with balloons in the middle.
It doesn't seem like something people mastered yet.
