We all must admit if not for the nostalgia this season was a massive disappointment. If you disagree with me let me propose this question. If this season had come out in 2005, a year after the show was originally canceled, would you be happy with how everything went?

Real talk I would be less pissed if Jack had found his sword conventionally and the scotsman stayed dead. the fact that those issues were both negated by a literal deus ex machina completely removes the feeling of actions having consequences, so when Ashi disappears it comes even further out of left field.
Tl;dr This season wasn't fucking deep in the first place and shouldn't have tried to end on an undeserved somber note.

As much as tried to be fair to the whole thing, I can't help but feel that the first 3-4 episodes were from a different season - the amount of detail and time given to each story piece was really in keeping with the rest of the original run.

Can we truly claim it was rushed? Everyone feels like that, this season is certainly giving us the evidence for it, so would extra 2-3 episodes for development of ashi and a proper finale be beneficial? How would you allocate extra time, had you been in charge and given it? (And I mean within the confines of the existing plot - we all know everyone would change the ending so give me details about the middle or even beginning that you would alter).

If it were up to me I would have given the show two seasons, like 20-24 episodes. But if I were to only be limited to 10 episodes, I would have cut out the episode where Jack wanted to commit suicide and figured out a better way to explain Jack losing his sword and getting it back.

I forget the title, but there was a recently published story on ff dot net about a law that prevented souls from disappearing due to time paradox. Meaning everyone Jack saved would still exist, they'd just forget him.

It ended with the high priestess getting a second chance and going back to have children with a normal dad, so that Ashi didn't disappear.

Ashi's last words are : "I love you, Jack. I always will"

After that sequence would be a scene where a depressed Jack has a one on one talk with his Dad. I dont know what the dialouge would be exactly but they would embrace each other as his dad shares wise words of comfort and the whole scene would mirror the very first one in the show where the Emperor talks to kid Jack .

The credits play on screen as we see the fixed future. Seeing alien races living happily on their own planet with familiar faces, and the familiar human faces living in a much brighter futuristic civilization.

We have a problem, that is, Jack is immortal. We have two likely causes. The first is that Jack is in the "wrong" time, so he can't age. This SEEMS to be the canon one. The second is that Aku's spell itself has some sort of lingering effect, tied to Aku existing. This is a bit more contrived, but curses like this are an old staple of fiction.

If scenario 2 was the cause behind Jack's immortality, then Ashi and Jack could have a case where they both lived normally, albeit in the future.

I can accept a tragic ending, though I don't like it, but I feel the problem is mostly down to not having any sort of proper closure to Ashi/Jack or future people/Jack. And I think it'd be better to just have it that Ashi perishes without the Aku part of her for mundane biological reasons rather than messing with time paradoxes which always end up stuffed up their own ass.

I don't agree that you can't 'have your cake and eat it too.' This sort of cynicism in real life and in media is a disease. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes the good guys just fucking win and the loving couple really do stick it out until they die.
