I was looking at a behind-the-scenes video on the creation of Grievous earlier. It was pretty interesting!

His basically final design was actually made by a guy at the last minute before showing it off to Lucas, who loved the idea of a guy that’s both organic and machine, like Vader.

And as they worked on designing Grievous, they had at least these guidelines to go off of:
“As long as it’s scary.”
“It’s gotta be threatening.”

Nothing about wanting to make a coughing droid, but that might be from a different video.

Up until an unknown time between Bloodline and TFA, Chewie is still on Kashyyyk fixing the planet and his family life, after staying there starting from Life Debt onwards. With his one main reason to be off-planet dead, I don't see a reason why he should be the keeper of the ship. Especially when someone else who can fly it almost as well as Han could is now in the picture to do just that.

And why wouldn't Chewie wouldn't want to fly off and see Luke, who can probably understand Wookiee at this point, and tell him the bad news in person? Or just to see an old friend, you know. I don't see any reason for them to write Chewie off and send him packing back to Kashyyk. That would be boring, I don't care what backstory they've given him. He's back in action and he has a ship, Ray's aboard because they have the same goal at the moment and the plot will no doubt given them more common goals to keep her aboard.

Chewie is going to be retired more and more because of Mayhew being too old to do shit anymore, out of respect for him. The whole OT is about throwing out the old and letting the new characters and situations take over. Han is dead, Chewie is focusing on his family again after being away from it for near a decade+, Leia is going to die because Carrie died. Luke and Lando will probably be killed off as well.

What's wrong with Hux?

Gleeson fucking sold it. Here's my fresh hot opinion, and feel free to disagree, but he was actually amusing. Krennic was sad in a way that was good, because you understood his motives. Galen was his best friend, and he didn't really understand people. He thought he did, but he was just playing himself. Hux was good ham and that speech scene is one of the only good ones in the film. I hope we get more character to him beyond 'he killed his dad and he's kind of a cunt' but I like that. But if that's not your thing, I get it. But not every villain is a Vader

This is an excellent way of putting it. Hux doesn't have much character (at least not yet) but Gleeson really worked the fuck out of what he had. I do love that speech. He's nearly foaming at the mouth by the end of it, it's fantastic.

I'm getting really nervous about IX. I'm worried that half the shit JJ "set up" (or, rather, thrown at the wall to create artificial sequel bait) won't be resolved even in TLJ. I hoped TLJ was going to clear things up and set IX for a tidy resolution, but it seems like we're going to play this stupid game all the way to the end. Trevorrow has his work cut out for him and I have doubts that he can handle it. I don't hate the guy, in fact, I pity him. LFL threw him right in the fire.

I'm just so tired of these manufactured mysteries, smoke and mirrors, teasing and baiting. I like Rey, Kylo and Finn. I'm invested, I want to see where their stories will go. No need to burden these movies with all this secrecy and cultivating delayed gratification that will do nothing but blow up in LFL's faces (just look at the shitstorm whenever a popular theory is debunked). TFA was already crippled by this strategy. Does TLJ have to be too? Do we have to face an inevitable letdown, á la Mass Effect 3, in IX?

Just tell a fucking story without all this needless bullshit. You don't need that, if people like the characters and the setting, they'll go see those movies. If the MCU keeps trucking without a pointless carrot on a stick, then Star Wars, a brand with much bigger reach and goodwill, certainly can too.

The crystals do not produce different effects no.

They are deeply connected to the force, and can help the user they connect to immerse deeper in their connection to the force. But they do not have unique abilities beyond that.

There's currently no explanation to why certain crystals become certain colors. (Black, purple, ect)

Might just be rare variants found on certain planets, like black crystals on Mandalore (possibly due to the wartorn land).

All we know for sure is that crystals are colourless until they are discovered by their Jedi, and that the blade will usually ignite blue or green. Rare cases will have the blade ignite Yellow, and traditionally this will end up being used formally by the Jedi Temple Guards. Dark Siders who perverse the use of the force will cause their crystals to bleed red, representing the unnatural usage of the force. These crystals can be purified to turn white however.

That's everything we know. It's unlikely that additional effects or roles will be added based on color because frankly the EU doing that was stupid as it attached huge implications to characters we saw on screen that were developed completely differently without any of that stuff in mind.

I liked differently coloured crystals more tbqh, it's a bit more mundane than having it turn into a certain colour. But I also know fuck all about how the crystals or sabers in general used to work in the EU.

Then again I suppose with how the red ones work now, it only makes sense for the crystals to change colour depending on their user.

imo, it would have made more sense using Grand Admiral Thrawn as the main antagonist of this particular Sequel Trilogy. For one thing, he was not present at the Battle of Endor. So the writers could have made it so that he finds out Sidious and Vader have been killed. He then regroups the remaining Imperial Navy and loyalists to strike back on the Rebellion-New Republic.

Heck, if they wanted a Sith warrior using a lightsaber to dazzle the fans of the Preq saber fight scenes, they could have made a major surprise by bringing back Darth Maul (he wouldn't be old since Zabrak age is different from human) who now holds the mantle of leader of the Sith now that Sidious is dead. But instead of continuing Bane's Rule-Of-Two, Maul would instead create an army of Sith to try and overwhelm the New Republic and the resurgence of the Jedi Order under Luke's Academy. If they also wanted or needed drama, go ahead and lure the son of Solo to join the New Empire where Leia tries to bring him back.

I'm hoping it will end with the development of a Space Cold War between the First Order (which has conquered or just absorbed a lot of the Outer Rim with an exclave around the Core Worlds) against a reinvigorated New Republic (possibly allied with a Mandalore that's a lot more interested in galactic affairs then it was during the time between the OT and ST)
As for characters, Finn has become a general for the New Republic, Poe is now a full fledged Squadron Leader building his own personal commando unit (think Wraith Squadron) and Rose is the Chief Engineer onboard Finn's flagship
Rey has created a new order of Force sensitive warriors with Luke's help, styled after the Jedi but attempting to correct a lot of their mistakes, in particular this new group is not directly connected to the Republic, for better or for worse
On the other side, Kylo is rebuilding his own vision of the Knights of Ren, having turned on Snoke and seized control of them, before handing over the First Order to Rae Sloane and/or Thrawn. I'm genuinely uncertain how Thrawn would feel about the FO but I do like the idea of him at least being on its Admiralty Board/Cabinet
Basically just leave things off in a definitive yet tense peace for the time being. The heroes have won, the galaxy is safe for the moment, and its time for everyone to lick their wounds and reconsider their plans

We don't need another galactic scale war for Star Wars. It can still be Star Wars even if it's focusing on small scale/planetary wars.

Surely even between the fall of the old Sith Empire and the Clone War there were probably thousands of them. We can have that and it can still be interesting. We even got a taste of that with TPM.

So yeah. Rebuild the Republic and base it again on Coruscant, because fuck JJ. Let Luke and Rey go to, SUCCESSFULLY, rebuild the Jedi Order. Let Poe and Finn establish some kind of standing army/militia for the Republic and they, or their successors in future Saga films, all just deal with the problems of the galaxy one issue at a time.

I can't remember which book it was (I think Aftermath, actually), but it introduces one of the first bb units as a therapy droid, deliberately made to look cute and serve as a safty-dog type companion. I'd assume that these therapy droids eventually were outfitted into Astromechs, until eventually becoming the standard.

Definitely. She should be, as she already tapped into the Dark side in TFA and has just as much, if not more, baggage as Anakin. Luke's life was sunshine and puppies compared to both of them. I can easily see Snoke or Kylo luring her away from Luke, either with information related to her past or generally with some sort of promise related to whatever Luke's cooking up with regards to the future of the Jedi. Rey might eventually end up opposing Luke's plans (according to the leaks, she already disagrees with him over the treatment of Kylo) and Snoke or Kylo will definitely be there to manipulate her.

My biggest hope is that she'll basically go a bit mad with power. Use the ease with which she mastered her connection with the Force in TFA in the narrative. She's already quite arrogant in TFA and that should be reflected in her training too, with her feeling like Luke doesn't really have anything to teach her (from her point of view, of course - and we already know that Luke isn't really going to be a "conventional" teacher like Obi-Wan and Yoda were to him), thus growing defiant. She should have a poor self-control too. While Luke worked hard for his aptitude and so understood the cost and dangerous allure of the Dark side and Anakin had years of Jedi conditioning to keep him somewhat in the Light, Rey has all this enourmous power at her fingertips already. And so she should be irresponsible, flirting with the Dark side without understanding and respecting it.

In short, Rey should fall prey to her own confidence and hubris.

I don't think it's going to be about her confidence and hubris being her downfall. Right now, Rey doesn't have a Jedi mindset at all. Her goal isn't related to that. She wants to find her family, and has quite a lot of anger in her. If Snoke or Kylo can offer her some truth on the state of her family, or if Luke had something to do with their disappearance, that would probably be enough to lure her to the dark in some respect.

Rey grew up thinking like a survivor and a scrapper with a single-minded goal and she has no real connection to Luke or the Jedi other than Han and stories she's heard. That can be used against her.

Just finished the final Aftermath book

The sad thing is, I didn't hate the Gallius Rax subplot. A more competent author would have dedicated an entire book just to his upbringing, planning, and implementation of Sheev's Contingency plan.

We could had a book that showed how Sheev controlled and grew his inner circle with Rax observing it all.

I like where they are going with the beginnings of the first order, but the scope felt really small. compared to Lost Stars, the Jakku battle felt tiny, and the remnant's of the empire that went off to create the first order felt even smaller.

You have Sheev's yacht with 2 adults and a few dozen wacky kids, and a Super Star Destroyer that could hold, at max, probably a million people. As well as some straggling star destroyers and imperial agents that also received the coordinates. This reminds me of Traviss' "1 million clones" incident.

In one of her books, she said the total size of the Clone Army was only 3 million clones.

Lots of people got angry about that because it just seemed way off. at the time, the Republic had a canon 1.3 million planets. that means they could only afford 2.3 clones per planet with an army that size.

At absolute minimum 6 million strong, but I'm pretty sure there are less planets in the Republic in canon
Plus the Clone Wars battlefields seemed to be concentrated on a few sectors, so it would be easy to concentrate Clone battalions into one battle area rather than try and spread them out all over the Republic

that's why I also didn't like the "single remnant" of the empire in the nu canon. One thing the old canon got right, was the numerous remnants that broke off and became their own thing.

Either way, an order of 5 million was seen as an escalation of the conflict so that gives us some idea of the kind of numbers the Republic was throwing around

There's references to an Imperial Remnant apparently nestled in the Core region (I'd assume Kuat and a few other worlds that clearly benefited from/just plain preferred the Imperial way of doing things), and Coruscant seems to have been left to the devices of Mas Ameeda as part of whatever deal the New Republic cut with him.
The evacuation plan seems to have just gathered up those Imperial remnants who wanted to continue the fight no matter what, leaving the relatively peaceful ones behind

BB-8 could be one of a kind on the Resistance. The Resistance uses old New Republic surplus. BB-8 was a top of the line astromech that Poe used in his T-85 X-Wings when he was with the New Republic Defense Fleet. When he left BB-8 was a going away present.
