This is a cycle that's been going on since Opal first appeared, maybe even going further back to when the redesigns first dropped.

People are ambivalent when the screenshots and clips first drop. Often people think it's going to be shit.
When the episode actually ends up airing, people warm up to the designs; maybe it's because they look better in motion or maybe the character's personality suits the design and carries it.
Is this universal? No, some people won't be completely won over.
But even then, you'll have the outliers who hate design but love the character.

Also, SU has had the same character designer since the first season so make of that what you will.

I don't have complaint for most designs. Centipede didn't bother me. It's just the fucking fanbase overhyping shit and spamming ALL the fucking social stuff I go to, shoving their repetitiveness down my virgin soft throat, making me gag

I'm okay with Smokey Quartz l'a genuinely ugly design because of my guilt of secretly not being okay with dating fat people. I never thought Peridot's designs were anything, but her character was annoying since the start. I never liked her since. When people said she was being flanderized on that one episode, I honestly don't see it, she's always that way

The only other design that struck me as ugly is Topaz's. It's still true. Her butch deformed body is still not pleasing to the eye. I never was bothered by Aqua's design.

sort of: from the beginning until Ian JQ left the Lead Character Designer was Danny Hynes and the other character designer was Colin Howard. When Colin became a boarder (because Joe had to focus on directing when Ian left) Danny remained the lead while Aleth Romanillos (who had been a storyboard revisionist back in season 1) took his place. shortly before Danny left Colin was Lead Character Designer alongside him, and is now the sole Lead Character Designer (due to the way episode production is staggered, Danny was probably still around when Topaz and Aqua were designed)

granted the point is semi moot because the writers and boarders are also involved in the design process (Smokey's final design involved Rebecca, Danny, director Kat, episode board team Raven and Paul, and Kat's other board team Hilary and Zuke, for instance) and while SU boarder turnover is unusually slow there have been some changes

That's just a school fight, that's actually normal. It's normal for people to get hurt during a fight, and to feel guilty about it (e.g. wondering if they could have handled it differently, if it was worth it).

That's not what happened to Connie.

Connie just bumped into someone, then somehow her fighting instincts activated and she somehow threw someone.

I would have actually liked it better if she got bullied, and then accidentally fought back too hard because she's used to fighting tougher enemies, or just used to fighting in general instead of talking it out.

She could have had a moment where she questioned what all this training was doing to her attitude/mindset towards people and conflict resolution, that would have been nice.

Instead we got her panicking because of a freak accident, and then her learning how to calm herself down by ignoring it.

I've said it before and I've said it again:

I would sort of like for a scene, maybe in the big finale, where Homeworld invades and are initially massacred, legions of Quartz soldiers being mowed down by the human militaries.

The diamonds are shocked at the "dishonor" of the humans (it gets revealed that the reason gems use melee weapons is some honor code thing) and promptly break out their big guns, things like multiple Lapis Lazulis and Aqua's freeze ray on a large scale, and proceed to curbstomp the humans.
