Are Superheroes that can stretch considered outdated now?

It is seen as a goofy power of a bygone era, like talking to animals
>>
>>92685741
Nah, you just can't do that much with strechy powers at first sight. Making a strechy guy threatening requiers a shit ton of creativity and some asspulls.

>>
>>92686051
Not him but it was neat usage of magic rubber powers until Gear 3. Then all that haki shit made everything stupid.
>>
>>92686130

incorrect
>>
>>92686161
Agree.
Gear 2 was stupid since it's a half assed explanation how this is connected with rubber.
It's just Kaioken pirate edition.
>>
>>92686090
Plastic Man is literary unbeatable and immune against all kinds of attacks. Even if you throw him into space, he would just turn into a fart propelled rocket and come back. Even then, you would need to touch him, which is a bad idea because he would just play the hentai game and kill you from the inside. Even reality warping would do jack shit because e is immune against this shit. The only way to beat him is to immobilize him with acetone then throw him into a different dimension where nothing exists and even then I think he will find a way to bullshit himself out.
>>
>>92686418
Didn't he die in the Injustice universe?
>>
>>92686130
I don't think so, since Haki isn't perfect for luffy 4th gear is pretty creative way tp use it. Since regular Haki is like hitting steel, luffy puts that in his rubber making it stretchy steel. Since since that kai is active it forces luffy to bounce, he can't stand still. It's got its own weakness but it's like pinball but with out the machine to knock the ball around.
Plus the design is awesome for what Oda creates.
>>
>>92686418
so freezing him or since he's in the vacuum of space wouldn't he die anyways?
>>
>>92685791

He could do with an updated design.

Pretty much. Usually they need an ensemble of characters with more interesting powers to keep the story engaging, whether it be enemies or allies.
>>
>>92686635
I don't disagree, but there's a logic to him not bothering since a shapeshifter would find simplicity preferable. He could honestly go full Manhattan and just make himself one red humanoid but Patrick, being Patrick, likes to have some personality.
>>
>>92686788
>more interesting powers
Can I argue that stretchiness is probably one of the best possible designs for a superpower?

>simple concept
>versatile yet limited
>has many uses outside of just fighting
>its function and limitations read extremely well visually (e.g. you can tell the character's stretching himself too thin)
>fun to see in action esp. animated

If anything they should stop making flying bricks

>>92686892
It's the only way to handle stories with fluctuating power levels. Stretching is entirely pointless if your strongest punch can't kill the enemy. And you'd have to tone back the scale of the conflict too, let's say Darkseid's only power was stretching, they could beat him by getting 50 resident superheroes to hide around a corner and cutting his outstretched limbs off.
>>
>>92686495
No. Broke his son out of jail and disappeared, never to be heard from again.
>>
>>92686977
and now I'm imagining a universe where Plastic Man has usurped Darkseid
>>
>>92685790
It depends how far in the strech powers you want to go
Make your character essentially rubber and you can make them do all sorth of crazy shit and never get hurt by getting hit at all
For example he could shoot himself because he is elastic against the bad guy and since that doesn't hurt him it's all fine
>>
>>92686977
The problem has always been fluctuating power levels tho. Of course once your villain is all powerful cosmic entity you're gonna need DBZ tier powers to fight it, but all creativity and fun go out of the window.

See The Incredibles, it's just a villain with a bunch of gravity gizmos and a really tough robot vs. an interesting set of powers. Even Mr. Incredible is just really strong, but not Superman strong.
>>
>>92687021
A universe where Plastic Man has wrapped himself throughout Darkseids body and controls him like a suit of armour.
>>
Talking to animals is seen as a terrifying superpower in North Korea. The children there actually, literally believe that Kim Jong can talk to mice because that's what they're taught there- to keep them to behave and shit- OR ELSE.

Or imagine some serial killer who can talk to animals.
Every bird his witness, every dog and stray cat his ally. Where would you hide?

>>
>>92686977
The thing is, strechers can punch hard. They don't need to care about the knockback as they can absorb it and they can punch you as fast as they can stretch. If they punch fast enought, they can be extremly threatening for the big guys.

That's the opposite of creative.

Also

That looks lame and doesn't work well with the artstyle as actual stretchy powers.

No shit. That's also how flying bricks work, and they're really a dime a dozen.

Why does stretchy powers make him a bullet again? Oh right, that dumb haki shit that makes everyone who had unique powers become a brick with passive telepathy now.
>>
>>92687536
A regular human fist can barely break wood, what superhero characters don't have abnormally hard fists? Hell, even punching a guy in the face will most likely make you break a finger.

>>
>>92687536
>Why does stretchy powers make him a bullet again?
Not that anon but what sets Luffy apart from a lot of stretchy power guys is that he's got much more...I think the term is tensile resistance? Like, snapback?

Whereas Reed or Plas can just kinda stick their arm out and hold it there Luffy's actually gotta pull it back or forward and that's where the velocity comes from.

I guess you could argue that makes him a superball but again I really don't think that looks as cool as other stretchy powers.
>>
>>92687721
It's either mounted on a wheel (so not just air) or not actually pumped with air.

I fail to see your argument anyway, car tires can hurt people but then so can pretty much literally anything.

A feather can suddenly hit like it weights 800 tons if it is fast enought. You can also nuke things with a feather if it is fast enought. Speed allows you to bullshit around these weight issues easily.

Apparently it's called the inner tube in English.
Even then I don't think you could make one big enough to knock down a wall. Hell even if you throw a normal one on a human it will knock them down because of the momentum but the hit won't hurt anything but cartilage.

I guess it sort of makes sense in a world where Luffy's hands could already break hard surfaces but idk, it just looks too fucking goofy to me when his big baloon limbs break entire buildings. Maybe it's because the "pumping my bicep by blowing into my thumb" is an old dad joke.

Not really if the thing you throw is too britsle.
You can throw a pillow as hard as technologically possible at a wall and the wall will stay the fuck there.

He can. Most iterations of him can. He doesn't normally, because he's too focused on thinking about stuff. The Maker is the most recent showing of "cool things people with stretchy powers can do" if they put their minds to it. Reed is usually using his tech and his head more than he's fighting anyone these days, though. By "these days" I mean pre-Secret Wars. Plastic Man and Reed can essentially do the same things.

Blood cells transport oxygen after the air has been filtered by the lungs.

There's nothing indicating that Luffy pumps air directly into his blood from his legs.

ok my answer still is the same because he still stretches while being a bouncy brick. The thing is before Luffy had to fully stretch then use the Haki armament because it hardens him like steel and can't stretch the part that is black. In 4th he can because he made his rubber power tough as steel and still able to stretch it.

Rubber is better than stretching. For one, it's a hard counter to the single most broken devil fruit in existence.
>>

well, even rubber can be electrocuted. You just need high enough voltage.

That was before shiny black haki was thought of. Enel with haki could just make something stupid like black haki lightning and nullify the rubber.

No pun intended but its a rather flexible power, with the well known subjects using it differently whule being rooted in the same powers.

If you want the classic take, Mr. Fantastic or Elongated Man are your go too. If you want to take the classic way and up it up to crazy, Plastic Man is your man. If you want someone more rubber than elastic and a different take on stretching, Luffy is a good example of so. Or if you want to take it a bit more serious and see it used for stealth, Helen Parr showcases that pretty well. Hell it can be seen as body horror so there is that too.

One problem is that its not a power that seems "cool" from a surface level. It can be so but the creators have to really put effort into it.

Another problem is that its a visually tricky power. Artists spent years mastering the human form so suddenly have to bend it out of wack will throw some off. I believe thats one reason its seldom paired with females since you don't wanna ruin that perfect body or something...

Speaking of, there is an indie planet comic called Bubblegum Jane thats worth a look for any stretch power fans. The way its presented is downright sexy.

They have very different powers and I don't really get why people equate the two.

Plastic Man is a shape shifter. He can stretch, expand, and turn into basically anything. He can be ripped apart and reform. He can turn his body into a functioning printing press if he wanted.

Luffy is a straight up rubber man. He can stretch and extend his body, but it always snaps back. Like actually rubber. A rubber band can't turn into a printing press.

You don't seem to understand that H2O and O2 molecules don't share all the same properties because they both happen to have oxygen atoms in them.

Steam happens when a liquid turns into gas. The oxygen in your body is already in gas form and far hotter than any oxygen (O2) would need to be liquid which is under 90.19 K (−182.96 °C; −297.33 °F).

Oxygen "steam" does exist, but suggesting it's what happens in this case makes you look like a retard.

I unironically think talking to animals can be OP so long as it isn't just talking to them.

Maybe it's because I've been around some of the more impressive and larger animals on Earth before, but the thought of being able to go tell a bear or something worse to go fuck up something is pretty ridiculous considering humans often can get spooked and shit their pants if a dog half their size starts acting tough.

I know that in the shadow of other basic things like laser vision, animals are overlooked but once you consider that even a weak chimp can rip your arms off or deglove your face, I don't know, I 'd take animal control over personal super strength.

I love this movie and how they portray capes so much. They show you only a tiny little bit of the heroes in their prime, just a taste.

That's gas transforming to liquid or vice versa, and that's still not the oxygen doing it. You don't prespire O2.

A detail I noticed at the dinner scene when the kids are fighting really showed Helen's expertise.

When she snared Dash, she first pushed him back but while doing so, formed a loop with her arm which went along so when he was pushed he was quickly wrapped.

With Violet, Helen's arm was swung at an angle so when Vi was pushed, the swinging force had her arm swing around and ensared her in one swoop. Impressive seeing she has been out of action for so long.

Actually, I got mad at the suggestion that he was pumping oxygen from outside of his body directly into his bloodstream through his legs because that's what you suggested happened before.

>>92691334
H2O=/=O2
O2 can be a gas, a liquid or a solid. So can H2O but at different tempereatures.
Your muscles use O2, and in the process your body rejects CO2 in gas form via breathing. Prespiration has nothing to do with this process, but with your body trying to regulate its temperature (as stated even in One Piece that he's overheating, and not breathing through his skin).
Oxygen, as an atom, exists in tons of molecules that have different properties at different temperatures.

This is seriously middle school level shit.

He hits Luffy with that Rokuougan twice, Luffy coughs up blood, eyes go white like a typical knockout, then all of a sudden he's behind Lucci. Then Lucci just lets himself get hit and lose.

I was pointing out that he is pumping the oxygen in his body causing more blood pressure. When doing so he creates a steroid effect. Did I say into? not what I meant, he pumps his blood by make pressure in his legs and that uses more oxygen causing his body to heat up.

And the kids have their own way of discovering what they can do while never really going as far as outclassing their parents. The integrate each character's arc with how they use their powers so perfectly in such a simple and visual way.

On paper Skypiea is great. Proving that an island in the sky exists and saving it's people from an evil God? That's a fucking fantastic adventure.
But, to me at least, it's a slog to get through. A bit better binge watched but most things are.

That's way it always felt like that was supposed to be the final punch to take down lucci
>>
>>92694421
Lucci would've been remembered as a total bitch in that case. Now he's a top tier villain because he basically says "yeah fuck that" and fights back in a long, gruesome fight of attrition.
>>
>>92694386
It definitely had a different structure. Every Island adventure ended with then saving the day and then getting run out of town. Of course I this (and this >>92694411) as a filthy dub fag so I'm not sure how things have been turning out post time skip.

>>
>>92694411
Basing your Skypiea opinion on the shit anime adaptation is a mistake. I used to think it was bad until I went back and read the whole series. The pacing in the manga version is nowhere near as much of a slog. But it doesn't matter, because Jaya ended up being a way better arc than Skypiea.

>>92694417
I wholeheartedly disagree. Baratie was probably the weakest of them, but it's nowhere near bad. Krieg wasn't a great villain, but Mihawk and early series Sanji completely save the arc. I loved the series until War of the Best, but I definitely enjoyed the startup the most.
>>
>>92694582
Enel's first encounter with Luffy is superior in the anime though.
>>

>Jaya ended up being a way better arc than Skypiea
Jaya was what made Skypeia so great. The fact that we spent enough time on Jaya to give a shit made Skypeia worthwhile, and the reveal of what Skypeia's land section was was worth it.

Skypeia is best the adventure arc, hands down.
>begins with a ship falling from the sky and a quote from an actual explorer
>salvaging a sunken ship for clues, get scared off by gigantic shadows
>all the talk of myths, lies, and adventure on Jaya
>South Bird using animal magnetism as worldbuilding
>actually taking the spout to the skies
>new land, new culture, new abilities that will later become slightly more commonplace, new threat
>connection between Jaya and Skypeia reveal
>that fucking backstory
>Enel's unparalleled smugness
>end by explaining the shadows as legit scientific phenomenon
>the fucking Blackbeard reveal
>>
>>92694709
>it's just plain dumb.
Sanji is defined by his etiquette even within irrational conditions. Even with his life on the line, he won't strike a woman, and even with his life at stake, he won't let someone go hungry. Sanji has strong principles, whether you agree with them or not.

Too bad characters actually die now because it really weakened a lot of the drama back then.

Wiper's buddies were getting offed like flies by Enel but then it's just a knock out. Aisa was screaming her head off when that happened making it sound like they died. Hell, Conis's dad survived Raigoh. Plus Wiper using a "life-threatening" Reject Dial.

Glad people can actually die in the present now.

Wrong. The Soul Soul fruit is the most broken power.

Mama can use her power to bring things to life under her control. An uncreative person might not think this is that good a power. But Big Mom used it to bring the fucking weather to life, so now she can create hurricanes. Imagine what else she could do.

If I had to guess, I'd say the same thing that happened to Caribou (serial killer), Mr. 3 (hitman), and Wapol (murderous despot). He'll be humiliated, then relegated to extended supporting cast through cover arcs.

I mean, this was a man who ordered the abduction of dozens of children (implied to have been hundred over time), drugged them into a stupor, and was subjecting them to a growth hormone he knew would kill them for the sake of Big Mom's research despite knowing the research was flawed and wouldn't produce anything. He was murdering children for fuck-money. You can't sell that as one of the lead protagonists for your kids' adventure story.

1. Plas' powers are not devil fruit-based

Also, at the end of the day, all of Luffy's aresenal is kicks and punches. Sometimes they're fast kick and punches, sometimes they're giant, doesn't change the fact that that shit straight up wouldn't work on Plas, ever. Meanwhile Plas could just easily wrap around Luffy's fist as he punches him and log a part of his body down his throat until he suffocates. Also Plasticman can swim so that's another advantage.

I don't understand how heat makes that happen. Having a fever doesn't make you stronger. I have no idea what the mechanism here is.
>>
>>92734007
because rubber is more durable than flesh, but heat is a by product of gear 2nd not the main cause, it's why when luffy first used it was causing some damage and exhaustion.
>>
>>92734007
plus higher blood pressure causes the body to heat up. Luffy being rubber allows him to maintain it with out bursting a blood vessel
>>
>>92688834
The quality has it's ups and downs, but I think given how obscenely long the show has been going on, that it's managed to maintain even brief moments of pure quality in amongst it's latest arcs is still impressive. Luffy is not flexible like Plastic man, Luffy's powers behave like actual rubber which can stretch but will resist the distortion. But Luffy does still use his stretchy nature as a tool besides brute strength, such as making a net with his fingers and filling with air so he can bounce larger projectiles back.
Plastic man is more like clay, he can stretch and mold without any force acting on him trying to pull him back to his base shape.
They have totally different powers so the question is more how would they manage if they traded their abilities.
>yfw Luffy constantly uses his plastic man powers to become stupid shit and never really fights with them.

The first time maybe, but she kept doing it. The nun was absolutely horrible at raising her though, so it's ambiguous whose fault it really is. Kind of like Chris-chan.

She should have been put down once it became clear that she didn't respect people enough to not pick them up and terrorize them against their wishes. The situation calls for it. If you have Luffy/Zoro/etc., you don't have to do anything. If there's an entire army around, then all crewmates will have to pull their weight. I liked that Fishman Island was a showcase for all the SH's new abilities, but at the same time, they still fit the general roles before the timeskip.

It's even funnier when people cry about a monster trio being ruined by Jinbe when all the crewmates have shown to be capable. You'll need someone like Jinbe to help out with the upcoming challenges.
