Why does the ghost appear to the son of the king who betrayed/killed him? Why would the son of all people listen to the dead enemy king instead of I dunno some other hero/knight from the dead Kings own side. Seems like the Prince would obviously be loyal to his own father unless something was already very wrong in their family

>>
>>92676659
somehow I get the impression we have not actually been graced by whatsisname that draws this comic
>>
>>92676753
Nah, by the time you're 14-16, your torso has pretty much grown in. good rule to remember is the elbows go down to the bottom of the ribcage, while the hand falls down to about a third of the way down the thigh, or basically good crotch-grabbing distance.
what you have here is basically deleted the lower half of the torso and scaled the legs down a little. It's not uncommon to do the latter, but the former really messes with things. Like for example if you wanted to show him putting on a jacket, it'd be a nightmare. he'd never get those elbows underneath it to insert the arm

I know it's unlikely but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Any artist want to work together on a comic?
I'll be frank, I got no money, and most recent examples of my writing is erotic literature, but I have an entire 50 page chapter under my belt from years ago along with some various pages and character designs, so I have experience working with artist and actually finishing some things (The things that didn't get finished were due to running out of money, and not just simply giving up or getting lazy.)

I've been working on this for a while now, and I've got a pretty solid outline for the story now, but I'm having trouble with color palettes. This character needs to be reddish for story reasons, but after doing all this I realized this was /too/ red. Any anons have a suggestion for a less saturated palette that's still clearly red and works with the style?

Doing art is probably 80% of a comic; learn how to git gud at art yourself, you'll learn a new skill, be able to depend on yourself, and you won't be stuck waiting on somebody else's schedule.

And they also won't feel like you're ripping them off as you throw something together in 10 minutes while they spend hours on a page.
>>
>>92680823
there's lots of options. that creamier pink at the top? good. dark salmon? good. desaturated magenta, rich warm burgundy, there's a million choices.. sometimes even just turning it a bit pinker..
>>
>>92680942
Easier said then done. Look how long it takes people who actually enjoy drawing to get even decent at it, it's just not realistic for someone in my position.
>>
>>92681028
You'll be alive for the next 10 years or so, at least. Start now, even if it's just doodles on napkins or in the side of a notebook.

If your story is not worth learning how to do art, it's probably not worth an artist's time spending at least 6 months drawing it up unless they're already a fan of your writing or you're paying them, and you've stated the second won't be the case.

I'm revising my site design. My pages are large enough that you have to scroll down, should I have nav controls at the top that stick as you scroll down? Or just have them stay put?

Currently, controls are only at the bottom of the page.
>>
>>92683754
I'd suggest just having navigation above and below your comic; somebody going through an archive to find a specific page will appreciate not needing to scroll at all for them.
>>
>>92683819
Well I'm gonna do controls at the top, but should I have them sticky themselves to the top of the window as you scroll so they're always there? Like as you scroll, the controls move down the pages with you staying near the top of the screen. I might go ahead and implement this, it only takes like 10 seconds with CSS sticky and I can roll it back if it doesn't go over well.
Also, when people click the comic link from the homepage, I direct it to the archive which has first and last page links at the top rather than link to the latest page as to avoid spoilers. Is this a good idea?

Hey guys, how's it going? Just recovered from a nasty cold. I actually felt the fever kicking in two weeks ago when drawing page three of pic related, wen to bed and was out cold for six days. Missed an entire week of college and only got around to continue drawing today. Colds suck but they're especially annoying in summer.

Anyways, what do you think of the paneling? I think I might have gone too far in a few places on page five but hopefully I can make it work.
The woman shown at opposite angles and overlapping several panels is the key to this page...

I've been around /hyw/ for two years. If you don't
a. have large amounts of disposable income
b. know an artist irl
c. still go to high school
your chances of teaming up with an artist are slim, bordering on non-existent. Invest your time in learning how to draw instead of chasing an artist.

t. guy who's been looking for an artist for years.

Also I've never ever, ever seen an artist looking for a writer, the least those who are obviously terrible at writing. It doesn't happen.

So what are better tablets to get for webcomics? I'm just looking for nice drawing tools, good interface and no lag, if thats possible for a low price tablet

Mostly it's because think writing is easy, so they tend to try doing it themselves first.

The ones who succeed move on to better things.

The ones who don't (come here) try to find help, whether through learning, reading or even teaming up with writers of equal or greater skill level. Making a comic as a team is way better than doing it alone.

Hi /hyw/. I had an important question I was hoping you guys could answer for me.

It concerns adapting my comic series into a web comic. I've been working on this series since 2015 in order to build a body of work for my Bachelors Degree in Fine Art. (We pick a focus and work from that for our capestone.) I have 84 pages of story, discounting front/back covers and interior pages. The 84 pages currently consist of 2 stories related to the main plot, a background/lore story, and a side story (plan to cross it over into the main story later on).

However, my drawing style shifted when I changed from brush/nib to isographic pens, as shown in pic-related. I figured there's no problem with a style change as long as it remains consistent thereon. Except... my drawing style is a visually busy one. It works when I resize and print them as zines (required for my comic-making class), but on-screen it can get very saturated. Some agree, some disagree. But I experimented with digital coloring recently (pic-related) and found it brings out a lot of visual clarity (bit of a no-brainer, I know, lol.)

I recently joined Tapastic in mind to upload my series there, but I'm wondering if I should hold off for now in order to color my current pages, or just post them as is. I plan to keep working on my series since I have a year left before graduation (I project another 84 pages), so that really makes me wonder if I should hold off until AFTER graduating to start it as a web comic.

Idk. Any feedback/comments/input would be appreciated.

Great stuff btw, guys. I really should contribute here myself.

with the amount of black and white, your comic works well as is. I think adding color will lose the impact of your solid inking man. For me, colors work better with less inking. See tintin, and all ligne claire comics vs stuff like italian comics, which rely on a much more thick and shadow heavy inking that looks way better in b and w.

Only one page left to ink. I'm happy with this one. It has titties.
>>
>>92697590

>Have you decided on a method...
Tapastic... Hive wants me to update weekly.

Can't have that I want each chapter to have AT LEAST 20 pages each, kinda like a biweekly comic. If i did this full time, I might be able to get these out faster.

Yup like i said if i do a page a day sure the comic gets updated every day,but it won't feel like a comic people can reflect on if they see 1 page a day instead of 20 or more seeing back to back cover of what happens in each chapter.

I wanted to give that feeling of people waiting in anticipation for the next episode of a TV show or book or Movie!

>For me, colors work better with less inking.

I've heard a similar remark by my professor in the past. I've relied off heavy hatching/cross-hatching/texture to "color" my comics thus far, so I suppose there's a level of compromising that effort if I overlap it with color.

Thanks for the feedback, anon. Like the page btw, especially how you filled and frame the various characters in the second panel.

Also giant titties. Always good.

>>92698011

That's an interesting approach, anon. I'll consider it, and go forward with posting my comic.

Curious if anyone can answer this question though: when you have a lot of pages already drawn out (84+ in this case), is it better to upload half of that portion so your readership has a good chunk to read through while you adapt to a one/two page update per week? Or should only a small portion be posted instead, so updating one or two pages a week last you longer while you're drawing/inking/touching up later pages?

Conviction is born out of the crucible of struggle. Knowing that a kid can whimsically turn down something that you long and work hard for should light a fire under your ass. But now that the /hyw/ feel good brigade has come to your emotional rescue, all those feelings which could've been channeled into something are now dulled into their previous stupor. Now that you know he doesn't actually have a Hiveworks deal to turn down, watching another episode of your favorite show won't make you feel so guilty anymore. Whew, feels good knowing others aren't as far ahead as you think, helps you feel you aren't so far behind.

Over my time working on these videos I've accumulated some pieces of fanart. So I've decided each video I release will have a "featured fan art" of dupe or any of my other characters and detail the artist just as some minor exposure. I really don't know if I should show this part at the end before the end slate or somewhere in the middle with a few other announcements as an "intermission" from the reviews. The only issue with that last one is it may be too similar to what Rebeltaxi's video structure is like. Here's the rough setup I got so far.

>>92709112
Those speech bubbles don't do the rest of the piece justice. I think taking the extra few seconds to draw them out would add a lot. That one on the left especially clashes with how smooth the rest is.

>>
>spend fumbling about my setting for the longest time
>finally realize that my main problem is that I'm trying to write about a country I don't know so that I can avoid writing about my boring country
Should I just make a setting from scratch or just embrace my ignorance and try to cover it up with a decent plot?
Anime turned the taste for urban sci-fi I got from Men in Black into a taste for urban fantasy AND sci-fi, and I can't help but to base my setting on burgerland because of the media I ended up consuming but I've never lived there.
I often go international when the plots thicken and that just makes shit even more difficult.

Well, I was planning to make a webcomic 3 years ago and was going to start sometime soon.

My comic would be about a villain group of critters, who were super villains, but very incompetent ones. The villains were

>A devil fly that wore the usual dastardly top hat, collared shirt and vest, and cape. He was the leader
>A southern squid who would mock him for being a shit leader and flirt with all of the male villains
>A mole that has super vision that would bitch about how it was a terrible superpower given to him
>A spider that was just misunderstood and called a villain because it looked scary.

But seeing that there's already a cartoon similar to it, I don't want to be called "uncreative and stole off of Villainous". My devil fly looks like the main character of that show surprisingly. Here's a one year updatedly doodle of him.
>>
>>92709403
>If this is your main character I don't see how it will catch any attention.
I'm not sure this justifies it, but my comic is a slice of life, set in the suburbs, not only him, everyone looks unremarkable.

Well if you're going to draw unremarkable characters at least draw them in a remarkable way. Scott pilgrim, Mission Hill, Cybersix, and Daria for instance all have average looking characters but the style they draw them in makes it memorable and unique. As it stands your protagonist just feels like a background character from any given anime. Try and stretch things further. I can't really find anything that would grab anyone's attention even vaguely as it is.

1) You hatch way too much, like you're afraid of leaving areas of inactivity. Relieving a bit of the darks around the figures is okay but it just doesn't cut it if everything's a jumbled mess of lines.
2) You keep the same line weight while going around jagged areas (example, panel 2 of the first page on the left). You shuould have thinner lines there because otherwise it gets messy.
In general work on your line weight and your values (light vs. dark) because as it is they make your art unintelligible.

I got into Hive due to the kindness of strangers because I can't draw at all.

I teamed up with a friend who bailed when he got a job at Cartoon Network. I then teamed up with an artist who flaked before the comic could properly launch.

Finally, I hired an anon because someone posted a pic from their webcomic. Been working with them ever since. Hive gives us a stipend to keep him onboard.

We also landed a book deal with a mid-size publisher wanting to make a bigger push into comics.

I barely spent any real money out of my own pocket. So if you're a struggling writer keep at it. The chances you'll get as lucky as I did are pretty slim, but I'm proof that it can happen.

Most of it doesn't really seem like Villainous to me, just the top hat on the fly and the fact that it's about villains. If you're worried about it, I'd say tweak the fly's design and it'd probably be fine.

As far as we can tell, nothing has gone wrong yet. It hasn't even been a year yet and we've had a pretty good, (but VERY small,) positive reception.

If you're curious then please give it a read. Maybe we are making missteps without realizing it, (totally possible,) and you can tell us what's wrong.

But I think we're about at where we should be, given that this is our first comic, (so we don't have an established fanbase,) and that it's only been serializing for 6 months.

7 if you count the February hiatus.

Not them, but I've really been enjoying your comic so far. The character designs and art are really cute. The story has a good action-y/shounen feel to it.

The pacing sometimes seems maybe just tiny bit fast, but it doesn't seem too unusual for a shounen comic. I think the fact that you upload a whole chapter at a time works well with the pacing.

I'm not signed up with smackjeeves, though, so I haven't favorited the comic or left any comments. I'm sure there are a few others reading it who are like me.

in, like, the 60s. I thought kids in the wifi age didnt even think about that. They didn't in my day, decades prior.

Maybe I'm getting old. I'm 30 and it's totally something we did when we were young.

Do modern kids stay at a hotel or something?
>>
>>92712655
>I'm from Peru, what's it to you?
ehh there's interesting things there, kind of. Mostly in the past or outside the cities. But by all means, it's good to educate yourself about the world and make a comic with broad borders
>>
>>92718866
Seriously? I'm 31. You didn't have stranger danger in the early 90s? I got in huge trouble if I left my parents' sight. and to this day I have no idea what a person running away would do to not-die, never remotely sharpened those skills. I don't know how you'd even find a hotel.
>>
>>92718913
Maybe it's because I'm German. Once our children are old enough to go to Kindergarten, we pretty much let them go wherever the fuck they want. When I was 11, I spent several days alone in Spain.
>>
>>92718913
30 here, stranger danger was real. I was almost kidnapped once.

>leaving after school class
>parking lot of 30 filled
>see trail of baseball cards
>start picking them up (I don't even like baseball nor collect)
>leads behind this big black SUV
>keep picking up cards
>about to turn corner when I hear my mom yelling my name
>turn around with a handful of ~20 cards and run back to her

Is it still like that or are American streets more safe today?
>>
>>92719348
I mean it's pretty much right out of some cartoon. It's kind of amazing how stupid kids are, it's nothing that I even want and I still got baited by it.

>>92719409
Probably worse, as population density increases so does crime.

Been trying to motivate my buddy to continue with his projects. How do you guys feel about a panty and stocking like art style? PaS isn't even remotely close to the subject matter, just asking if you like how it looks.

>>92719409
Even without crime, people don't like being away from any place without electronic devices. Not until they're in their 80s.
>>
>>92719409
Do you guys get Amber Alerts? It basically notifies every phone in the area when a kid has gone missing or something. Really loud buzzing and beeping, not too often.

I went out a lot in my teens, but I agree with the other posters - I wasn't allowed outside pretty much at all as a kid. Limited to the back yard and front yard.
>tell my folk's i'll be staying at my friend's house, didn't even think to mention it'd be overnight
>phone dies
>they call the cops, hasn't even been 24 hours
I was 17

aka sane.
>>
>>92719409
stranger danger was 96% fabricated. those involved with its genesis even admitted it later on.
that said, when you push something like that in the news so much, it BECOMES real. people who otherwise wouldn't do things like that hear that apparently everybody's doing it, and they try out cartoonish stunts like >>92719007 this. which I'm pretty dubious of.
so for the most part, no, the world never stopped being safe. it turns out the vast majority of child abductions and abusers and molesters and all that are family.
>>
>>92719760
I used to get something like that on TV.

honestly I kind of like the idea of keeping your kids where you can see them. Not for safety or anything, but just for your own peace of mind so you don't have to keep track of as much. There's no good influences outside the home anyway. if there were, whatever they are, just.. integrate them into the home. That's what home is for.
like when our babysitter decided to take us about a block to go to a convenience store and grab some treats.. she wasnt doing anything wrong, but i can completely understand why my parents didnt want that. it's not so much danger, it's the lack of knowledge.
>>92719538
in any case, things were safer when people knew their neighbors and kept an eye out of their windows and porches and knew everything going on all the time. But we also had fucking mad xenophobia as a result. There's gotta be a compromise.

>>92719996
There is no compromise. As members of a community become more ethnically and culturally different, solidarity inevitably weakens. Separate ethnostates for each race is the best solution.
>>
>>92720281
oh you.
well at least that makes more sense than feeling solidarity with people based on where you live
i think that might have made more sense back when people had more (but also less) say in where they lived. they were more connected to it, at least. instead of it just being this random "eh i found a place i can afford over here, i'll live here for maybe 3 years" thing.

but you know damn well people just create infinite subdivisions no matter how similar they are. all they care about is that they share a way of life.

You are technically proficient, with both your anatomy and constructing a scene.
I particularly like the way your panels are bordered.
The only real nit-picks I have is that your style and character design are kind of generic. Those are pretty small nits though.
>>
>>92719760
The police around here has a database with everyone who is currently missing. Every police guy in Germany has access to it. Unless there are hints that crime happened, they simply wait untill a policeman finds them or untill they return.
