At first Venom was unique because all other symbiotes would eventually kill their host. Then they retconned it so that the symbiotes are actually noble space warriors.

When Bendis was writing GotG there was some bullshit about symbiotes being good aliens that help people but are easily corrupted by people that aren´t compatible with them. I'm guessing the symbiote was "corrupted" by Lee again, but that would also require Costa to acknowledge that it was mindwiped when it was "purified".

Although I always had a gist of who the character was, this is actually the first time I've directly read a full comic with Eddie being Venom. My impression of the two pretty much goes back to when Flash was Venom and Eddie was Anti-Venom and then Toxin in Carnage. So this take on the character is also my way of getting a full impression of the two together.
With that said, it's pretty jarring to see Eddie suddenly treat the Symbiote directly like his lover and then see him be the one to have signs of doubt about getting it back when the Symbiote's becomes okay with killing anyone again.

But more to the point, this is an actual continuity worthy direction for Eddie from before the character was thrown under the bus for Gargon and Flash. Especially after the wholesale character assassination that was making the symbiote a total bitch and having Flash Thompson using it to cosplay as a garbage Punisher rip-off, then as a Rom rip-off.
How the hell does Eddie go from Chad reporter who, by all accounts, was a super-cool, super-awesome guy to be around/friends with, to a drooling, lunatic murderer?
I've been waiting YEARS for a writer to fucking address this shit, as far as naming the symbiote as the creature that led Eddie down the road to damnation. Yes, Eddie hated Spider-Man. But he was too nice of a guy to actually try and kill him until the symbiote got it's claws into Eddie's flesh as a meat puppet.

OG Eddie, was a short, brick shithouse of evil. He was an evil Chad, not a good Chad: he was short and basically built like a dumb fucking football player and most likely only became a reporter because a communications major had the only classes Eddie could pass.
The fact that Eddie basically bore a super strong resemblance to Flash, indicates that Eddie basically WAS Flash back in his asshole high school jock days. The only difference between the two, is that Eddie never spent a tour in 'Nam to beat the asshole out of him.

I assume you're talking about me? Yeah I'm using a nametag, since I seem to be getting recognized lately. Don't know if I'll use it again after this post but who knows? And yeah I know I'm really late. Was pretty busy today and finally have some free time now.
So yeah I love that Mania is not only not dead but in New York with Flash. Even if they don't see her again after this, it still comforts me knowing that the two are together and Flash didn't abandon her again. Though I do still wish for her to appear in more things after this. I know a lot of people here are against it because Slott but I'd like it very much if she appeared in Amazing Spider-Man. I understand the risk involved in Slott writing her but I feel it would be worth it for the exposure and it'd be probably be interesting to see Peter interact with Andi. To be honest I'd like just to see Andi interact with other characters in the Marvel Universe in general, especially now that she's in New York, where a great number of characters reside. Mania/Andi appearing in Amazing Spider-Man would probably also give us more Flash and Andi stuff, which I of course would love.

We haven't seen yet if Andi is into boys or girls (or both). However if she does turn out to be gay I wouldn't mind her being paired with Hummingbird. That would make for a very cute and fun relationship.
I would also take Spider-Gwen. Mostly for the exposure to be honest, with Spider-Gwen probably being one of Marvel's most popular female characters at the moment. But also because Spider-Gwen and Mania both have a sort of punk rock vibe to them. On a related note, I'd like to see Mania crossover into Spider-Gwen's book and maybe play guitar for The Mary Janes.

Okay I should really be in bed right now but I'm going to try to give my thoughts on the issue as a whole before doing so.
First Story by Costa. Seems better written than the previous issues (though that may not be saying much). However it suffers from continuity problems, ignoring some of Brock's character development and the feeling he has had towards the Venom symbiote over the years. Also the symbiote is very kill-happy here yet was a moralfag during the previous 6 issues. And don't say Lee Price corrupted it , because the symbiote was still a moralfag after it left Lee. The reason it left Lee was to be with Spider-Man and be a hero again. The only thing that should be different about the symbiote now is that it hates Spider-Man. I do appreciate though that Brock isn't entirely comfortable with the symbiote here. They are not in total agreement and Brock is questioning their relationship with each other. Also it may be a bit hard for me to go from Moore's art here back to Sandoval's art in the next issue.
Now second story, the Flash Thompson story by Robbie Thompson. Okay. First, the good. Flash and Mania are together in New York. Mania doesn't die. I did genuinely feel bad for Flash, with him and Andi looking for him like a lost pet.
Now the bad. The reason why Flash and the symbiote are separated is stupid. Venom gets hit by some weird sort of high-tech gun (let's call it a plot gun) wielded by one of the FBI agents from the previous issues. This separates Flash from Venom and Venom starts growling and screaming and doesn't appear to recognize Flash anymore. Flash tries to talk to it and calm it down but to no avail. Venom then runs away. No explanation is given to why Venom is acting this way. Yes it's because it got hit by that weird gun but it's not explained why whatever the gun hit it with is causing him to act like he does.
Third Story by David Micheline. Classic 90's style Lethal Protector story. Nuff' said.

Absolute fucking garbage. This is a complete disservice to the character. It shows Costa (and by extension, the entire editorial staff on the book, namely Nick Lowe, Devin Lewis and Allison Stock) are lazy, to the highest order. Costa couldn't even be bothered to go back and read the last few symbiote runs (Spaceknight and Conway's Carnage). They all show a complete lack of knowledge for the characters and have completely disregarded the last decade (and some change) worth of character development (for both Eddie and the symbiote) for a story that doesn't even make sense in the larger Venom mythology. Hell, the symbiote's own personality keep changing depending on whatever the hell Costa wants to do with the story.
Why was it trying to be heroic all the way up to being captured by Spider-Man/Brock... and then suddenly, when it rebonds with Brock wants to straight up murder people? Just because? Makes no sense.

He broke down when he lost everything due to what he assumed was Spider-Man's interference in his life.
Muh Eddie is always the paranoid asshole muttering to himself in public, scowling at people, and wondering why everyone else thinks he's a paranoid asshole. This, plus the symbiote which allows him to right any wrongs as Venom.
It's like the OG Eddie portrayal, only this kind of character doesn't typically have much room for growth even as a recurrent antagonist, which is why Eddie went on a hell of an inconsistent character development journey as Venom's popularity exploded.

Yeah, sorta. She never actually appears. She gets put in a coma off panel (pic related). Otherwise, she is never shown or mentioned again. She might as well be dead.
Her only actual appearance is in Venom: Dark Origins, which shows her and Eddie as kids. That mini itself doesn't really line up with continuity, though. So might as well just ignore it.

The symbiote hates Spider-Man because he captured it, after watching the symbiote go berserk and trash a helicopter (and punch Spidey in the face). The whole plan to capture it was Brock's idea. I honestly didn't hate that book, but it's still baffling to me that he took a concept that I loved (AKA any parts of Spider-verse not written by Slott) and wrote such a mediocre book. How do you screw that up?
