Depends on what you're doing. Brad Neely produced lots of great material that were essentially just slide shows.

There are certain key components in a cartoon. What he is saying is to take one of them and cut that in two.

no no no no
motion literally gives weight and feeling to the movement. Even in comics, line of movement and such is very important into how a picture looks good.

I'm glad this gem of pure autism is being posted here so we can all point and laugh at how fucking wrong it is.

The audience that appreciates character design and layout first is the most sophisticated and refined one. It's not that they're better, it's just that that level of taste develops over time. You start out watching for flashy motion and action, and eventually learn to see the fundamental elements, until you're down to just the bare skeleton. You can compare it to how someone watching movies might start out mainly interested in plot and action. But over time, as they watch more and gain a better understanding, they learn to love character focused things, and eventually they move on from that to appreciating composition and editing and other lower level elements.

I have found my nemesis.

I will kill this man. I hope him a long life, with many children. Many loves - two wives and 3 mistresses at least.

I want it to hurt when he is gone. I want everyone to be injured by his death. I want the world to be scarred by this stupidity.

Because this stupidity is special - this is the most wrong thing I have ever seen.

I have seen pornography of a woman fucking an ant-farm, I have seen rule 34 of the Brave Little Toaster, I have seen suicide images of jumpers, I have seen the snuff images of baby seals clubbed to death, I have seen shitting-dick-nipples assfucking tubgirl, and I have seen a consensual loving heterosexual couple copulating for the purpose of breeding.

This comment is the most horrifying, disturbing and generally wrong thing ever posted on the internet, and I hope the poster dies in a tragedy so horrid it injures the world.

No. If shit was chopping along at 5 frames a second but looked like it was painted like the Mona Lisa would you like it? Or would you prefer something that looked simple but took month, or even years, of pain staking work to make the animation look fluid and believable.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SAYING

ANIMATION IS ENTIRELY BASED AROUND MOTION

YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT ART, NOT ANIMATION

ART = STILL IMAGES

ANIMATION = THE ART OF STRINGING TOGETHER A SERIES OF STILL IMAGES TO MAKE THEM APPEAR AS IF THEY'RE MOVING

THAT'S LIKE SAYING "heat is irrelevant to cooking"

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Anon, we all know the show is good.
But it is inherently an insult to the show to claim it has good animation. It's style and former PLAYED on its intentional shortcomings as a highlight to the stories. Please, don't do this. Don't make me talk smack about Babycakes.

He sounds like an assblasted portrait artist trying to get into the animation industry.
>>
>>92651854
Damn that looks awesome. I should watch more mecha thats not gurren lagann or megas xlr
>>
>>92653137
That's the point I'm making. You don't NEED fluid animation to make a good animated product. Movement isn't as necessary as the autists in this thread are making it out to be. It depends entirely on the product being made, in the case of Brad Neely's shorts, movement was essentially non-concern yet the product suffered none for it. It doesn't look like a Disney movie, but it wouldn't be as charming if it did.

Movement in animation is negotiable. It is one part out of many in a finished product, the importance of which need not be elevated above the others or uncompromisingly considered absolutely essential to quality.
>>
Why does /co/ get so heated over discussing animation? Do they feel the need to save 2D western animation by giving others a hard lesson or are they struggling animators themselves? Both?

Gundam 079 is a great starting point. Another great one is Zambot 3 but it's incredibly soul crushing.
>>
>>92653252
The way spergs ITT are treating movement as sacrosanct come off like the French Academy of Arts turning up their noses at the impressionists because it wasn't conventional. As if animation can and must only be one way and not a malleable medium whose limits are only those imposed by the creator.
>>

Sometimes.

>>
>>92653754
That's an animatic. Totally different animal.
>>
>>92651557
No, he is not right.

But good animation does require good drawing, and skilled animators can create better looking motions with fewer frames of drawing than an amateur.

/co/ is sometimes too focused on the number of drawings as a measure of animation quality. High frames reflects budget, not skill. There is a reason inbetweening is the entry level job for animation.

Both of these are correct, actually. A lot of anime that weebs call well-animated is actually terribly animated even though it looks great in still frames.

There's a lot of great animation in anime in general, though.

XY looks good on stills but the animation is kinda stiff
SM looks like absolute ass on stills but you won't really see it if you actually watch it
>>
>>92651818
Are you implying only casuals are interested in plot?
>>
>>92651557
Well if really limited animation is all a certain project can afford, maybe just making the stills look good as possible is the best option
